  • Aerosol Jet Printed Optical Waveguides for Short Range Communication

    摘要: This article presents an innovative way for additive manufacturing of optical multimode waveguides for short range data transmission. By the use of aerosol jet printing between conditioning lines on flexible foils, low cost and low weight polymer optical waveguides can be easily fabricated. The main advantages – compared to other waveguide manufacturing techniques – are the maximum fabricable waveguide length (not limited by panel- or wafer size), technology costs and 3D-ability. Furthermore, the printing allows for very long structures, which are not limited to wafer or panel sizes. In order to classify the new manufacturing approach and compare it to other technologies such as photolithography, imprinting, dispensing and ion-exchange, results on the mechanical (shear strength) and optical performance (transmittance, near field and attenuation) are presented. In addition, the experimental results on the data transmission performance are important to prove the suitability of the waveguides for high-speed communication applications. In this context, nearly error-free transmission up to 10 Gbit/s was achieved at a wavelength of 850 nm.

  • A nanosensor with ultra-high FOM based on tunable malleable multiple Fano resonances in a waveguide coupled isosceles triangular resonator

    摘要: A simple plasmonic structure, which is made up of a metal baffle in the middle of the metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with an isosceles triangular cavity, is reported to achieve triple Fano resonances. These Fano resonances are numerically calculated by the finite element method (FEM). Besides, the multimode interference coupled mode theory (MICMT) and the standing wave theory are used for analyzing the Fano resonances phenomenon. On the one hand, these three Fano resonances can be independently tuned by adjusting the structural parameters, which makes the design of highly integrated photonic circuits more flexible. On the other hand, the proposed structure is well malleable and can be easily extended to a quintuple Fano system by introducing a ring resonator. Furthermore, the suggested structure can act as a high efficient refractive index (RI) sensor, yielding a great sensitivity of 1200 nm/RIU and a ultra-high maximal figure of merit (FOM) value of 3.0 × 106. Comparing with other similar sensors, our structure has relatively good sensitivity and it is superior to other structures in the maximal FOM, which obviously demonstrates its excellent nano-sensing performance.

  • Analysis of the Errors Caused by Disturbed Multimode Fibers in the Interferometer with Fiber-Coupled Delivery

    摘要: In this paper, the errors of the displacement measurement interferometer with multi-mode fiber-coupled delivery are analyzed when the fibers are disturbed. Simulation results show that the characteristic frequency of the measurement error is consistent with that of disturbance, and the error has higher order frequency components. The experiments are designed for the effect of fringe contrast on the measurement error. The experimental results show that the measurement error is rather sensitive to the interference angle between the measurement arm and the reference arm in the multi-mode fibers, but not to the irradiance ratio of the measurement arm and the reference arm. In an interferometer with multimode fiber, the interference angle between the measurement arm and the reference arm needs to be restricted. This conclusion provides a theoretical basis for designing an interferometer measurement system with interference angle that is adaptive to wider application.

  • Input Filter Capacitance and Inductance Design for Photovoltaic Systems

    摘要: A conformal permeable toroidal antenna operating in both a vertically polarized monopole mode and circularly polarized (CP) dipole mode in the UHF frequency range is designed based on theory of magneto-dielectric radiators. This antenna has been fabricated using a new advanced ferromagnetic laminate composite material whose high impedance and anisotropic properties enable an antenna that radiates via magnetic currents. The antenna, less than 0.5 m in diameter and less than 2 cm thick, was fabricated and tested. Including the imperfections of the feed network and a simple matching scheme, the antenna operates from 200 to 500 MHz with an input match of better than 10 dB, CP dipole realized gain as high as 2 dBi, and monopole mode vertically polarized gain as high as 1 dBi.

  • Universal Output Characteristics of Single-Mode Operation in Low-Loss Large- <i>V</i> -Number Multimode Waveguide Lasers with Transverse Spatial Hole Burning

    摘要: We study the performance limit of single-mode operation in low-loss large-V-number planar waveguide lasers, with transverse spatial hole burning as the dominating mechanism for transverse-mode competition. By introducing normalized variables, we develop a simple semianalytical model to describe the universal output characteristics of single-mode emission before the onset of high-order modes, which can be easily scaled to a wide range of laser configuration parameters. Our model is validated using exact numerical solutions, which show applicability beyond that of the low-loss approximation. Our analysis establishes a minimum criterion of the loss ratio between the fundamental and first higher-order mode for a robust single-mode operation. This criterion is much weaker than that of conventional wisdom based on the pure wave-propagation argument, which we attribute to a resonator enhancement effect. Our universal outcome can be denormalized to establish the relationship between single-mode extraction efficiency and optimum output coupling in a multimode laser with arbitrary modal loss ratios over a wide range of single-pass unsaturated gain and loss.

  • New Silica Laser-Optimized Multimode Optical Fibers with Extremely Enlarged 100-??m Core Diameter for Gigabit Onboard and Industrial Networks

    摘要: We present new type of silica graded index laser-optimized multimode optical fibers (LOMF) with extremely enlarged core diameter up to 100 μm and “typical” “telecommunication” cladding diameter 125 μm. This optical fiber was designed for harsh environment Gigabit onboard cable systems and industrial networks. It differs by special optimized graded refractive index profile, providing low differential mode delay (DMD) for selected guided modes. We present some results of tests, performed for manufactured pilot 520 m length of described LOMF 100/125, concerned with its geometry properties as well as key transmission parameters—attenuation and DMD map.

    摘要: We have developed a 5 × 5 mm2 compact silicon-photonic receiver with a 28-nm CMOS transimpedance-amplifier (TIA) chip. The receiver chip was designed using a photonics—electronics convergence design technique for the realization of high-speed and high-efficiency operation because the interfaces of the optical and electrical components greatly influence the receiver characteristics. Optical pins were used to obtain easy optical alignment between the multimode fibers and the germanium photodetectors. An aluminum stripline between the PD and the TIA enhanced the 3-dB bandwidth because its characteristic impedance is greater than the TIA input impedance. Coplanar waveguides (CPWs) on the etched SOI wafer achieved a low insertion loss because the overlap between the electric fields of the CPWs and the silicon layer was reduced. We demonstrated 25-Gb/s error-free operation at both 25 and at 85 °C. The minimum sensitivities and power consumptions of the receivers were ?11.0 dBm and 2.3 mW/Gb/s at 25 °C and ?10.2 dBm and 2.5 mW/Gb/s at 85 °C, respectively. These results show that our receiver can be applied for practical use at high temperatures.

  • A cost-effective realization of multimode exciton-polaritons in single-crystalline microplates of a layered metal-organic framework

    摘要: We report the observation of multimode exciton-polaritons in single-crystalline microplates of a two-dimensional (2D) layered Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), which can be synthesized through a facile solvothermal approach, thereby eliminating all fabrication complexities usually involved in the construction of polariton cavities. With a combination of experiments and theoretical modelling, we have found that the exciton-polaritons are formed at room temperature, as a result of a strong coupling between Fabry-Perot cavity modes formed inherently by two parallel surfaces of a microplate and Frenkel excitons provided by the 2D layers of dye molecular linkers in the MOF. Flexibility in rational selection of dye linkers for synthesizing such MOFs renders a large-scale, low-cost production of solid-state, micro- exciton-polaritonic devices operating in the visible and near infrared (NIR) range. Our work introduces the MOF as a new class of potential materials to explore polariton-related quantum phenomena in a cost-effective manner.

  • Transformation of the intensity profile for a step-index multimode fiber core

    摘要: The launch light conditions for the 200-μm core step-index multimode ?ber have been de?ned by the International Electrotechnical Commission. However, we found conditions that give results outside the speci?ed values, even when the launch lights are within the standardized encircled angular ?ux requirements. We report the transformation of the intensity pro?le for the ?ber core showing non-uniform intensity distributions at practical link lengths. These distributions cause a gap compared to classical geometric models. We veri?ed our proposed approach for a launch light study by using far- and near-?eld patterns of the ?ber.
