  • Graphene Photonics || Nonlinear Optical Properties

    摘要: In the preceding two chapters, we consider only the linear optical response of graphene; fields of different frequencies do not mix, and the amplitude of the response is linearly proportional to the strength of the excitation optical field. In this chapter, the nonlinear optical response of graphene is discussed. In general, the nonlinear optical response of a material is described by a polarization that is a nonlinear function of the optical field; such a nonlinear polarization is characterized by a nonlinear susceptibility. Because graphene can be treated as a conductor, its nonlinear optical response can alternatively be described by an optical current that is a nonlinear function of the optical field; such a nonlinear current is characterized by a nonlinear conductivity. As in the case discussed in the preceding two chapters for the relation between linear susceptibility and linear conductivity, these two alternative descriptions of nonlinear optical properties of graphene are equivalent. In this section, we first define the nonlinear susceptibility and then make the connection between the nonlinear susceptibility and the nonlinear conductivity.

    摘要: It is shown that terahertz radiation (0.1-3 THz) can be effectively generated via optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in a system of a “nonlinear-optical crystal partially filling the cross section of a rectangular metal waveguide”. The numerical calculations for the phase-matching in LiNbO3, ZnTe, DAST and GaSe nonlinear optical crystals have been performed. The influence of THz radiation absorption on the efficiency of generation of coherent THz radiation in the system has been investigated.

    摘要: Arbitrary control of high-power THz polarization and frequency is studied by the numerical calculation based on the coupled wave approach. THz wave generation using organic crystals via optical rectification provides high conversion efficiency. To overcome the limitation of the generated THz field direction which comes from their optical anisotropy, we propose the synthesis of THz wave generated from two crystals whose optical axis are orthogonal each other. By the calculation, the linearly and circularly polarized THz wave generation by changing the time delay of two pump pulses is demonstrated.

  • Synthesis of bilayer graphene nanosheets by pulsed laser ablation in liquid and observation of its tunable nonlinearity

    摘要: Bilayer graphene nanosheets (B-GNSs) have been synthesized from dry-cell graphite electrode by using facile laser ablation in liquid technique in ambient condition. The plasma plume generated on incidence of ns pulsed Nd:YAG laser fundamental radiation of 1064 nm has facilitated the transformation of bulk graphite (BG) into B-GNSs via liquid carbon phase within 30 min of laser irradiation, and the layer number is are found to be increased with further increase in laser ablation time. The thickness dependent coherent nonlinear optical (NLO) response of the synthesized materials in aqueous dispersion has been determined by spatial self-phase modulation technique. The oxygen-containing surface defects in multilayer GNSs (M-GNSs) have led to scarcity in amount of e-h pairs in compared to that in B-GNSs. Therefore, a better NLO polarization has been observed in B-GNSs in compared to that of M-GNSs. Moreover, the thickness dependent thermal conductivity and hydrodynamic performance of GNSs-water dispersion has led to the observation of tunable NLO response with change in temperature as well as with the intensity of pump laser. The experimental findings obtained in this work may be considered as a key step towards fabrication of graphene from graphitic waste materials for development of future nonlinear photonics devices.

  • Heavily doped Semiconductor Colloidal Nanocrystals as Ultra-Broadband Switches for Near Infrared and Mid-Infrared Pulse Lasers

    摘要: Heavily self-doped semiconductors can be designed to use for advanced photonics due to both fabrication and functional advantages. Ultrafast response, strong optical nonlinearity, broadband wavelength range and accessibility of integration are major challenges for ultrafast all-optical photonics operating in infrared wavelength range. Here, solution-processed Cu1.8Se semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) demonstrate ultrafast response (about 360~520 fs), strong optical nonlinearity (as large as -1.4×103 cm GW-1) and broadband (from 800 to 3000 nm) nonlinear optical absorption in the near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelength range. The ultrafast response and larger optical nonlinearity may be triggered by the plasma ground-state bleaching in the strong surface electromagnetic filed. Stable Q-switched lasers in Er-doped fiber laser, Tm-doped fiber laser and Ho/Pr co-doped ZBLAN fiber laser are operated, respectively. These findings indicate that Cu1.8Se NCs are prospective nonlinear materials for ultrafast response and broadband pulse laser.

  • Ultrafast Nano-scale Optical Switching in a Plasmonic Interferometer with Enhanced Tunability

    摘要: An all-optical switch based on plasmonic metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguides and the Mach–Zehnder (MZ) interferometer is designed. In order to realize an all-optical and active switch, a nonlinear material with intensity-dependent refractive index is introduced in one arm. Other than studying a typical MZ structure, we also investigate the asymmetric case where unequal thicknesses and distances for MZ arms are proposed. The finite element method (FEM) with a refined triangle mesh is employed for simulations. Results for ON and OFF states are provided with or without employing the pump field. Investigation of the geometrical dispersion reveals tunability of the structure for specific frequencies in the terahertz region. Finally, we show that introducing asymmetric arms provides better tunability in the designed ultrafast nano-scale switch and suggests its potential applications in integrated optical circuits.

    摘要: Vanadium Diselenide (VSe2) has a high electrical conductivity owing to the electron delocalization of the vanadium lattice framework. Most of previous research has been focused on its electronic properties. The nonlinear optical properties of VSe2 have not been investigated yet. Herein, we prepared few-layer VSe2 nanoflakes by liquid phase exfoliation. Subsequently, we utilized Z-scan technique to study the nonlinear optical properties of few-layer VSe2 nanoflakes. And we prepared VSe2 based saturable absorbers (SA) and achieved passively mode-locked operation in Er-doped fiber laser. The results indicate that VSe2 nanosheets own remarkable nonlinear optical properties and could be employed as ideal saturable absorption materials in pulsed fiber lasers.
