  • Periodic soliton interactions for higher-order nonlinear Schr??dinger equation in optical fibers

    摘要: Research on the interactions between optical solitons is of great significance for the large capacity and long distance transmission in optical fibers. In this paper, interactions between periodic solitons are investigated for the first time. Analytic solution for the high-order nonlinear Schr?dinger equation, which can be used to describe the periodic soliton transmission, is obtained based on the bilinear method. Interaction characteristics between periodic solitons are discussed. Influences of corresponding dispersion and nonlinear effects on their interactions are analyzed. Results provide theoretical guidance for the stable transmission of periodic solitons in inhomogeneous optical fibers.

  • Determination of refractive index using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) with a D-shaped optical fiber and a nano-gold grating

    摘要: A D-shaped optical-fiber refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon resonance is reported. Rigorous coupled-wave analysis was used to simulate the numerical modeling. The influences of different metal grating parameters on the coupling efficiency were studied and an optimal phase match was obtained. The results show that wavelength sensitivity of the proposed optical fiber sensor is as high as 0.925 lm/RIU for refractive index values from 1.35 to 1.43 with a high linearity value of 0.997. The reported structure may promote the development of high-performance biochemical sensing devices.

  • Fiber-reading radiation monitoring system using an optical fiber and red-emitting scintillator for ultra-high dose condition

    摘要: We have developed a remote scintillation detector using a CCD spectrometer and a red-emitting scintillator coupled with a 20-meters optical fiber for ultra-high-dose condition. Gamma-rays were detected with a conventional deep-red-emitting ruby scintillator and Cs2HfI6 which is a novel material with 700-nm red emission and a high light output. The scintillators were irradiated with gamma-rays from a 60Co source under the effective dose rate from ~0.002 to ~1 kSv/h. The integrated area of the Cs2HfI6 emission spectra was larger than that of the ruby, and the good linearity of Cs2HfI6 signal as a function of dose rate was confirmed.

  • Numerical modeling & analysis of AsSe2-As2S5 chalcogenide based step-index optical fiber for nonlinear applications

    摘要: In this paper, we have proposed a chalcogenide-based step-index optical fiber with AsSe2 chalcogenide glass as core and As2S5 chalcogenide glass as cladding. It is designed and numerically analyzed for different values of radius of the core of the optical fiber. The chalcogenide-based step-index optical fiber, with a proposed value for its radius of the core, is then simulated for supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared region by injecting an input pulse of 50 fs duration and peak power of 5000 W for different propagating lengths of the fiber.

  • Sub-pm${{\sqrt{{\rm Hz}}^{-1}}}$ non-reciprocal noise in the LISA backlink fiber

    摘要: The future space-based gravitational wave detector laser interferometer space antenna (LISA) requires bidirectional exchange of light between its two optical benches on board of each of its three satellites. The current baseline foresees a polarization-maintaining single-mode fiber for this backlink connection. Phase changes which are common in both directions do not enter the science measurement, but differential (‘non-reciprocal’) phase fluctuations directly do and must thus be guaranteed to be small enough. We have built a setup consisting of a Zerodur baseplate with fused silica components attached to it using hydroxide-catalysis bonding and demonstrated the reciprocity of a polarization-maintaining single-mode fiber at the 1 pm √Hz?1 level as is required for LISA. We used balanced detection to reduce the influence of parasitic optical beams on the reciprocity measurement and a fiber length stabilization to avoid nonlinear effects in our phase measurement system (phase meter). For LISA, a different phase meter is planned to be used that does not show this nonlinearity. We corrected the influence of beam angle changes and temperature changes on the reciprocity measurement in post-processing.

  • A Coherent Homodyne TO-Can Transceiver as Simple as an EML

    摘要: The introduction of low-cost coherent signal reception in optical telecommunications is one of the great challenges since its opto-electronic sub-systems are associated to a high degree of complexity. In this work we propose a disruptive approach: the re-use of widely deployed direct-detection technology for simultaneous coherent homodyne reception and transmission. We first show that an externally modulated laser (EML) is sufficient to perform both, coherent reception and transmission functionality. Second, we prove that homodyne detection applies to the EML-based scheme in virtue of an injection-locked local oscillator, which for low input power levels is pulled to the optical carrier frequency of the incident data signal. The proposed methodology for coherent reception enables a greatly simplified transceiver as optical-layer hardware. As we will demonstrate it just requires single fiber access, a single radio frequency port and can be implemented in a transistor-outline package. Full-duplex transmission with coherent homodyne reception is experimentally validated, showing 2.5 Gb/s transmission over 27.5 km reach and a loss budget of 28 dB, and coherent Gigabit Ethernet connectivity – without use of optical-layer digital signal processing functions.

  • Fiber Bragg Grating-Based Oil-Film Pressure Measurement in Journal Bearings

    摘要: The on-line measurement of oil-film pressure inside a journal bearing based on an optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and described for the first time. Two methods are described, one includes inserting the packaged FBG into the bearing using rubber and the other is involved the packaged FBG being directly embedded on the bearing surface. The inserted method has a higher sensitivity than the embedded version, while the embedded method incurs less damage to the bearing being small in size. Experiments to verify the feasibility of both methods are described with parameters being measured over the full motor operating range. Experimental results of the oil film pressure measured by these two methods agree well with simulated values, demonstrating excellent prospects for using the sensing schemes described in this paper as the basis for real industrial measurement systems. Furthermore, due to its small size and high sensitivity, coupled with excellent immunity to external electromagnetic interference the FBG sensor is an ideal candidate for measurement in which a strong electromagnetic field exists, e.g., in the case of electrical motors and generators.

  • Impact of Pulse Width on the Sensitivity and Range of a Raman-based Distributed Fiberoptic Temperature Sensor

    摘要: This work presents the operation of a spontaneous Raman scattering-based distributed fiber-optic temperature sensor using a commercial OTDR and a standard EDFA optical amplification in a simple and economic scheme. We present both theoretical and experimental results regarding the sensor’s sensitivity and performance in seven different configurations, using OTDR pulses of 100 ns to 4000 ns for two detection regions, in the beginning and ending sections of a 27 km standard single-mode fiber sensor link. The results reveal the trade-off between sensor sensitivity, resolution and range, regarding the use of different OTDR pulsewidths.
