Evaluation of Signal Regeneration Impact on the Power Efficiency of Long-Haul DWDM Systems
摘要: Due to potential economic benefits and expected environmental impact, the power consumption issue in wired networks has become a major challenge. Furthermore, continuously increasing global Internet traffic demands high spectral efficiency values. As a result, the relationship between spectral efficiency and energy consumption of telecommunication networks has become a popular topic of academic research over the past years, where a critical parameter is power efficiency. The present research contains calculation results that can be used by optical network designers and operators as guidance for developing more power efficient communication networks if the planned system falls within the scope of this paper. The research results are presented as average aggregated traffic curves that provide more flexible data for the systems with different spectrum availability. Further investigations could be needed in order to evaluate the parameters under consideration taking into account particular spectral parameters, e.g., the entire C-band.

Application of combined optical signal processing methods to compensate for nonlinear effects in fibre-optic communication links
摘要: We report on the use of complex quadrature amplitude signal processing methods based on a combination of static neural networks and special modulation techniques. The conditions are found that allow one to construct the most effective combination of signal processing methods for transmitting signals with considerable power (in the nonlinear regime). Using analytical methods, it is shown how the statistical properties of a signal affect the efficiency of combined processing methods.

Experimental Demonstration of Subband Index Techniques for m-CAP in Short Range SI-POF Links
摘要: In this letter, novel spectrally-efficient subband index (SI) techniques have been developed for multiband carrierless amplitude and phase modulation (m-CAP). The subband index techniques transmit additional information bit on the index of the conventional m-CAP subbands. Experimental demonstrations are performed in a short range optical data link using step-index plastic optical fibre (SI-POF). The demonstrations show that the proposed techniques enable flexibility in design and significantly improve the power/spectral efficiency of the conventional m-CAP.

Leak Detection in Water Pipes Using Submersible Optical Optic-Based Pressure Sensor
摘要: Leakage is undesirable in water distribution networks, as leaky pipes are financially costly both to water utilities and consumers. The ability to detect, locate, and quantify leaks can significantly improve the service delivered. Optical fibre sensors (OFS) have previously demonstrated their capabilities in performing real-time and continuous monitoring of pipe strength leak detection. However, the challenge remains due to the high labour cost and time-consuming process for the installation of optical fibre sensors to existing buried pipelines. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of a submersible optical fibre-based pressure sensor that can be deployed without rigid bonding to the pipeline. This paper presents a set of experiments conducted using the proposed sensing strategy for leak detection. The calibrated optical fibre device was used to monitor the internal water pressure in a pipe with simultaneous verification from a pressure gauge. Two different pressure-based leak detection methods were explored. These leak detection methods were based on hydrostatic and pressure transient responses of the optical fibre pressure sensor. Experimental results aided in evaluating the functionality, reliability, and robustness of the submersible optical fibre pressure sensor.

A new formaldehyde optical sensor: detecting milk adulteration
摘要: A sensor consisting of an optic fibre with the exposed tip coated with a the polyoxometalate salt [(C4H9)4N]4H[PMo10V2O40], specially designed to be insoluble in water, which UV-Vis spectrum changed in contact with formaldehyde, is presented. The sensor limit of detection for formaldehyde was 0.2 mg L-1, and the limit of quantification was 0.6 mg L-1, which were close to the conventional spectrophotometric method values of 0.2 mg L-1 and 0.5 mg L-1, respectively, and lower than the tolerable limit for ingested food. The sensor was tested for formaldehyde quantification in milk, as its deliberate addition is a matter of concern. The results obtained analysing formaldehyde in milk samples by the optical sensor and by the conventional method were not statistically different (α=0.05).

A Multiport Converter Interfacing Solar Photovoltaic Modules and Energy Storage with DC Microgrid
摘要: A novel real-time optical fibre X-Ray dosimeter for monitoring the radiation pulses delivered from a clinical linear accelerator (Linac) is presented. The primary focus of the sensor is to measure low doses of ionising X-ray radiation in real time (limited to 0.1-ms gate time of the detector). The sensor tip material scintillates upon exposure to X-ray energy and the resultant low-level visible light signal is coupled to a polymethyl methacrylate plastic optical fibre, which is used to guide it towards a distal avalanche photodiode-based detector. The detector measures the low-level scintillating light from the sensor, thereby converting the ionizing radiation energy to a measurable signal with a time resolution of 0.1 ms. Results show that the scintillating optical fibre X-ray dosimeter is capable of capturing the individual X-Ray pulses delivered by the Linac during normal operation. Further examination of the results demonstrates that the sensor is capable of measuring dose rate and, hence, dose with a linearity (R2 = 0.9995 ? 0.9999) and in a highly repeatable manner for dose rates in the range 100 to 600 monitor units/min.

A hybrid distributed optical fibre sensor for acoustic and temperature fields reconstruction
摘要: We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a distributed optical fibre sensor (DOFS) based on the hybrid of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Ф-OTDR) and Raman optical time domain reflectometry (ROTDR), which could reconstruct the acoustic and temperature fields all along the sensing fibre at the same time. The Rayleigh back scattering (RBS), Raman Stokes (RS) and Raman anti-Stokes (RAS) generated by the probe pulse were separated by a WDM filter. Then the RBS was received by a heterodyne balanced photo detector (BPD) for quantitative vibration measurement and the dynamic acoustic field reconstruction, while the RS and RAS components were received directly by avalanche photodiodes (APDs) for temperature demodulation. The experimental results have shown that the proposed hybrid system could measure the temperature profile along a 12km long standard single-mode fibre with a maximal temperature uncertainty of 0.95℃ and a linearity response of R2=0.9986, along with a periodical knocking event detected simultaneously. Meanwhile, a 100Hz sinusoidal vibration at 12km distance along the same fibre could be clearly identified. Distributed knocking vibration and temperature was achieved at the same time with high accuracy.
