  • Extraordinary propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves in a one-dimensional anti-PT-symmetric ring optical waveguide network

    摘要: In this paper, we design a one-dimensional anti-PT-symmetric ring optical waveguide network (1D APTSPROWN). Using the three-material network equation and the generalized Floquet-Bloch theorem, we investigate its photonic mode distribution, and observe weak and strong extremum spontaneous anti-PT-symmetric breaking points (WBPs and SBPs). Then the transmission spectrum is obtained by using the three-material network equation and the generalized eigenfunction method. The 1D APTSPROWN is found to generate ultra-strong transmission near SBPs and ultra-weak transmission near WBPs and SBPs, with the maximal and minimal transmissions being 4.08×1012 and 7.08×10-52, respectively. The maximal transmission has the same order of magnitude as the best-reported result. It is not only because the distribution of photonic modes generated by 1D APTSROWN results in the coupling resonance and anti-resonance, but also because 1D APTSROWN composed of materials whose real parts of refractive indices are positive and negative has two kinds of phase effects, which results in the resonance and anti-resonance effects in the same kind of photonic modes. This demonstrates the anti-PT-symmetric and PT-symmetric optical waveguide networks are quite different, which leads to a deeper understanding of anti-PT-symmetric and PT-symmetric structures. This work has the potential for paving a new approach for designing single photon emitters, optical amplifiers, and high-efficiency optical energy saver devices.

  • Nonlinear Optics || The Intensity-Dependent Refractive Index

    摘要: The refractive index of many optical materials depends on the intensity of the light used to measure the refractive index. In this chapter, we examine some of the mathematical descriptions of the nonlinear refractive index and examine some of the physical processes that give rise to this effect. In the following chapter, we study the origin of optical nonlinearities in molecular systems, in Chapter 6 we study the intensity-dependent refractive index resulting from the resonance response of an atomic system, and in Chapter 7 we study some physical processes that result from the nonlinear refractive index.

  • Synthesis of yttrium iron garnet/bismuth quantum dot heterostructures with localized plasmon enhanced magneto-optical performance

    摘要: Interactions between light and magnetic matter attracted great attention lately due to their potential applications in nanophotonics, spintronics, and high-accuracy sensing. Here, we grew bismuth quantum dots (Bi–QDs) with strong spin–orbit coupling on a magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG) via molecular beam epitaxy. The YIG/Bi–QDs material shows an enhanced magneto-optical Kerr rotation up to 130 % compared with that of a bare YIG film. The Bi–QDs were also introduced onto a lutetium–bismuth co-doped YIG film to form a hybrid system with remarkably enhanced Kerr rotation (from 1626 to 2341 mdeg). Ferromagnetic resonance measurements showed an increased effective magnetization as well as interfacial spin–orbit field in the YIG/Bi–QD heterostructures. Localized plasmons were mapped using electron energy loss spectroscopy with high spatial resolution, revealing enhanced plasmon intensity at both the Bi–QD surface and YIG/Bi–QD interface. Introducing Bi-QDs onto the YIG film enhanced Kerr rotation owing to the attenuated optical reflection and increased effective magnetization. The Bi–QD-enhanced magneto-optical effect enables development of efficient nanoscale light switching, spintronics, and even plasmonic nano-antennas.

  • Light control through a nonlinear lensing effect in a colloid of biosynthesized gold nanoparticles

    摘要: Biosynthesis of four samples of colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles is achieved using hydroalcoholic extract and three different separated compounds of the plant Bacopa procumbens. The nonlinear optical properties of each sample are characterized with the Z-scan technique. In all cases, the Z-scan curves indicate a negative or self-defocusing response, which is mainly attributed to thermal effects. Among the four samples, the hydroalcoholic extract was noted to have the highest nonlinear optical response and was selected to demonstrate the formation of self-collimated beams (SCBs). This kind of beams are obtained when a convergent CW laser, with only few tens of milliwatts of optical power, is introduced into the sample and induces a negative-lens effect that shifts the focal spot forward. As a result, the otherwise highly focused beam propagate with little divergence over lengths of up to 10 mm. Moreover, an SCB is capable of controlling and steering a weak probe beam of a different wavelength, since the probe experiences the lensing induced by the pump. Noteworthy, the response time of the material was found to be less than 0.07 s, which makes it a plausible candidate for photonic applications.

  • Integration of chiral cellulose nanocrystal films in silica optical fibers

    摘要: Cellulose nanocrystals have attracted great attention as new “wonder” materials for photonic applications owing to their unique property of spontaneous self-assembly to form chiral nematic films. Here, the incorporation of chiral cellulose nanocrystal films on a photonic waveguide is demonstrated for the first time – in the form of integrated silica optical fibers with a helicoid nanocrystal film on their input facet. In order to achieve repeatable cholesteric ordering across the fiber core modal area, a fabrication method was developed where several optical fiber facets form part of a larger flat surface, which acts as the substrate for the planar anchoring of the cellulose nanocrystals. The resultant optical fibers exhibit significant circular dichroism (almost 40%) in transmission and act as all-fiber spectral filters. The proposed fabrication technique provides a simple, low-cost method for developing chiral silica optical fibers that remain compatible with standard telecommunication fiber technology. It is envisioned that the incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals in other optical fiber types will enable the development of a new class of fiber devices.

  • Linear-nonlinear optical, dielectric and surface microscopic investigation of KH2PO4 crystal to uncover the decisive impact of dopant glycine

    摘要: Present investigation has been started to perform the comparative study of pure and glycine doped KH2PO4 (KDP) single crystals grown by most commercial slow solvent evaporation technique. The grown crystals were subjected to single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis to determine their structural parameters. The linear optical studies of pure and glycine doped KDP crystal have been undertaken within 200 nm to 1100 nm wavelength range by means of UV-Vis studies. The enhancement in second harmonic generation (SHG) ef?ciency of glycine doped KDP crystal has been determined using a standard Kurtz-Perry powder test. The dielectric measurements have been carried out to explore the impact of glycine dopant on dielectric constant and dielectric loss of KDP crystal. The surface growth habitat and etch pit density of glycine doped KDP crystal have been evaluated using the results of microscopic etching studies. In light of obtained results the suitability of glycine doped KDP crystal for device applications has been discussed.

  • Electro-optical Amplitude and Phase Modulators Based on Tunable Guided-Mode Resonance Effect

    摘要: Here, electrically tunable amplitude and phase modulators are designed by the hybridization of indium tin oxide (ITO) into a guided-mode resonance mirror (so-called GMRM) which consists of a high-index silicon (Si) nanograting placed on top of a Si guiding core followed by a silicon-dioxide optical buffer layer and a highly reflective substrate. The physical mechanism is based on the intriguing optical characteristics of GMRMs and integration of a dual-gated ITO with the capability of charge carrier modulation into the Si nanograting. A gate-tunable amplitude modulator with a modulation depth as high as ≈0.80 is realized by careful selection of structural parameters, excitation of a strongly coupled guided-mode resonance, and modifying the external bias voltage. This design can also be adjusted only by changing the thickness of its optical buffer layer and moderating the strength of the guided-mode resonance to serve as an efficient active phase modulator. The phase variation of ≈210° and relatively high reflection amplitude in 0.45-0.6 range are accomplished when the applied bias voltage alters from -15 V to +24 V. This reflection phase tuning mainly originates from the carrier depletion and accumulation inside the incorporated 5 nm-thick ITO layer. The accurate modeling and numerical calculation of optical response of the proposed unit cell for different applied external voltages are carried out through linking the electrostatics device physics model and rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) optical simulation. The design rules and physical principles behind the dual-gated ITO-integrated GMRM unit cell are discussed in-depth by investigation of the structural parameters, the nature of supported resonances, and voltage-dependent effects of inhomogeneous carrier distributions in both ITO and Si layers. The electrical addressability and individual control over pixelated subwavelength unit cells provide the opportunity for realizing an actively reconfigurable metasurface with the desired gradient phase delay.

  • Q-switched all-fiber laser based on MoSe <sub/>2</sub> films with chemical vapor deposition method

    摘要: In this work, MoSe2 ˉlm is synthesized by the chemical vapor deposition method. Saturable absorber (SA) is assembled with the tapered ˉber and MoSe2 ˉlms. Q-switched operation is achieved with the MoSe2-based SA. The experimental result reveals that the MoSe2-based SA has excellent saturable absorption characteristic with 23.41% modulation depth. When the pump power is greater than 289.2 mW, Q-switched all-ˉber lasing action is demonstrated. The repetition rate of the Q-switched pulses varies from 185.6 to 252.8 kHz. The shortest pulse duration is 801.9 ns, and the largest output energy is 69.3 nJ. Results indicate that MoSe2 ˉlms can provide new opportunities for large-modulation-depth optical modulators in ultrafast photonics.

  • On symmetry of rare-earth scandium borate RESc3(BO3)4 (RE = Ce, Nd) laser crystals

    摘要: Symmetry, structural features, and point defects in the Czochralski-grown single crystals with the initial compositions CeSc3(BO3)4 (CSB-1.0) and Nd1.25Sc2.75(BO3)4 (NSB-1.25) are studied by the full-profile Rietveld method on synchrotron X-ray powder data. The space group P321 is first established and confirmed for CSB-1.0 and NSB-1.25 crystals, respectively. The features of synchrotron diffraction patterns that distinguish the space group Р321 from the R32 one are given. The site occupancies in both structures are refined and resulted in the stoichiometric composition for CeSc3(BO3)4, which coincides with the nominal composition, and the composition [Nd0.455(1)Sc0.045(39)(1)]Nd0.500(2)Sc3(BO3)4 ((Nd0.955Sc0.045(39))Sc3(BO3)4), which differs from the initial Nd1.25Sc2.75(BO3)4 one, with partial occurrence of Sc ions in one of the trigonal-prismatic sites. An analysis of literature data on single crystals with the general formula RESc3(BO3)4 (RE ? Ce, Pr, Nd) together with the results of present study of powdered single crystals gives reason to exclude a crystallization of these compounds and solid solutions based on them in the space group R32. The correlation between the refined compositions of RESc3(BO3)4 crystals (RE ? La, Ce, Pr, Nd), having a specific space group, and compositions of initial charge is given.

  • A Report on Growth And Spectroscopic Studies on The L-Tartaric Acid Doped Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate Non-Linear Optical Single Crystals

    摘要: In recent years study of non-linear optical (NLO) materials is gaining rapid momentum due to their needs in several device applications. Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) is a well-known NLO material, whose non-linearity is enhanced by doping with amino acids. In this present study, single crystal of L-Tartaric acid doped potassium Dihydrogen phosphate (LTKDP) have been grown by slow evaporation method at room temperature. Good quality transparent crystals were obtained with 27-30 days. The crystallinity and cell parameters were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), the shifts in frequency assignments of various functional groups of KDP due to the addition of L-Tartaric acid was analysed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopic studies. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the single crystals were studied as a function of frequency. Kurtz- Perry power technique was employed to determine the Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) efficiency of LTKDP single crystal.
