Passive Optical Network Based Mobile Backhaul Enabling Ultra-Low Latency for Communications Among Base Stations
摘要: Low latency is of key importance for mobile networks to support emerging time-critical applications, such as road traffic safety and efficiency. Meanwhile, a passive optical network (PON) is widely recognized as a promising solution for mobile backhaul networks thanks to its high capacity and low energy consumption. In the conventional PON-based mobile backhaul network, where base stations (BSs) are co-located with optical network units, the traffic between the neighboring BSs that are mainly caused by user mobility has to be first sent to the optical line terminal and even further, e.g., edge nodes of mobile core networks, resulting in high latency, although the adjacent BSs are geographically located close to each other. In this paper, a novel PON-based architecture is proposed for mobile backhaul to enhance the connectivity between neighboring BSs. Meanwhile, a tailored medium access control protocol and dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm are introduced to support fast inter-BS communications. The results reveal that a low latency (less than 1 ms packet delay) for communications among any adjacent BSs can be achieved in the proposed PON-based mobile backhaul network, demonstrating great potential to support future time-critical applications.

Hardware-efficient Signal Processing Technologies for Coherent PON Systems
摘要: Future passive optical network (PON) systems supporting more than 50 Gb/s/λ present a challenge for the use of intensity modulation direct detection (IM-DD). Since coherent technology improves the receiver sensitivity over that of IM-DD, it is a promising candidate for 100 Gb/s or higher PON systems. Introducing hardware-efficient signal processing technologies tailored to PON systems will help render coherent technology suitable for PON systems. We here review hardware-efficient signal processing technologies suitable for PON systems. We introduce two types of simplified adaptive equalization (AEQ), one which sacrifices differential group delay compensation (DGDC), and another which sacrifices some chromatic dispersion compensation but does provide DGDC. Transmission experiments on a 100 Gb/s/λ-based coherent wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) PON system showed that simplified AEQ without DGDC and with DGDC exhibited only 0.2 dB and 1.4 dB penalty respectively, compared with conventional DSP. The additional penalty due to the maximum possible cumulative DGD was evaluated by numerical simulation. Conventional AEQ and the simplified AEQ with DGDC showed negligible penalty, but the simplified AEQ without DGDC showed a 1.4 dB penalty. We also introduce simplified carrier phase recovery (CPR) with inter-polarization phase offset estimation, and this showed the same performance as the conventional DSP, in both experiment and simulation. Taking these results into account, 100 Gb/s/λ-based coherent WDM PON systems with the simplified AEQs in combination with the simplified CPR were shown to be able to support the loss budget required for 8 ONU splits over an 80 km span of single mode fiber.

摘要: The H.264/AVC medium grain scalable (MGS) video standard is utilized to optimize video playback on passive optical networks (PONs). Video traf?c delay is the primary object of this optimization, though this technique’s impacts on other network performance metrics such as data traf?c delay and video traf?c delay variance (jitter) are also investigated. Video playback is improved by employing an adaptive algorithm which progressively drops scalable video layers as network utilization increases. The performance impact of the algorithm’s three parameters is investigated in detail, and the results of the optimized algorithm are compared to baseline results for reference.

A novel optical network model for network burden release and congestion reduction based on passive optical network
摘要: In this article, a new optical network structure coping with network congestion is proposed, which is based on passive optical network, and adopts data storage devices coupled with optical line terminal to release network burden. It is shown by our network performance simulation that this network has many merits such as free-scale, fewer connections, larger clustering coefficient, and smaller average shortest path length in comparison to the passive optical network. The novel network structure can replace the far-end service connections with the near-end ones, reduce congestions in an optical network, and, furthermore, relieve traffic burden in optical backbone and metropolitan area networks.

摘要: A modern level of information technologies and computer facilities, as well as an actively developing digitalization of energy grids, allow us to reconsider approaches towards the development and improvement of the functions of automation and control systems for energy installations of various voltage classes. Primarily, it is a medium voltage, as the most common and, in connection with this, the most significant for end users. We propose a new 'Smart Grids Plus' concept for the digital energy grids design. These grids, in addition to the layers of intelligent energy grids and information communication channels, include a layer of diagnostic monitoring based on a passive fiber optic sensor networks. Sensor networks have a hybrid TWDM structure – information exchange channels and integrated fiber optical sensors – core, based on a new technology for address interrogation and multiplexing – special addressable fiber Bragg gratings, combined for arbitrary topologies. Some examples of diagnostic monitoring nets for temperature control of complete switchgear contacts and busbars are considered. Their principles of operation are discussed. The main advantages of these sensor networks are using addressable fiber Bragg gratings simultaneously with sensors and multiplexing elements, and using the PON structure simultaneously with sensor and communication networks.

Looking at large sets of patent data provides a better understanding of several important innovation waves in PON development, with an emphasis on adopted ITU and IEEE standards. In this paper, we also review key PON technology segments, discuss patent filing activity in different world regions, discuss key companies and patent leaders within the PON technology.

摘要: Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing PON (TWDM-PON) is next generation PON technology that increases the PON capacity due to having multiple wavelengths for both upstream and downstream links with tunable transceivers in the optical network units (ONUs). It is also proposed for connecting radio units to the cloud, termed as mobile front-haul, in 5G. The most important feature of TWDM PON is a dynamic wavelength assignment scheme that can efficiently handle ONU migration from one wavelength to another to balance the traffic load. In this study, the working of DWA mechanism for ITU compliant TWDM PON is presented and an adaptive DWBA scheme is presented that can dynamically handle ONU migration in case of asymmetric traffic load conditions. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through a TWDM PON test bed implemented in OMNET++ environment. For the traffic load analysis a simple regression model is used. Overall, the ADWBA scheme reduces the average upstream delays of T2 and T3 up to 28% and of T4 up to 50% with valuable reduction in bandwidth wastage.

摘要: Paper present a simulation of bi-directional WDM-TDM PON with upstream re-modulation based on RSOA for 64 ONUs at 60 Km reach with 5 Gb/s downstream and 2.5 Gb/s upstream bit rate. A 1:16 splitter is used as a PON element which creates communication between central office and different users. The effectiveness of this design depends on the ability of the RSOA to re-modulate the received downstream signal with the new upstream signal. This architecture is investigated for different RSOA power, downstream receiver power and extinction ratio in terms of BER. The result shows that as the RSOA input power decreases and the device operating regime becomes increasingly linear, the BER performance of the upstream signal deteriorates and that of downstream signal improves. Also it is observed that greater the extinction ratio the harder is for the RSOA to overwrite the downstream signal

VCSEL-based differential modulation technique for high-speed gigabit passive optical networks
摘要: With the convergence towards 5G, optical networks need to be upgraded to support the emerging data tsunami. This work experimentally demonstrates the first real-time transmission of 20 Gbps over a class 10G 1550 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) in the context of on-off-keying (OOK) modulation format, by employing VCSEL differential drive mode technique, for adoption in high-speed gigabit passive optical networks (GPONs). Two OOK data streams each with 10 Gbps are differentially modulated onto a single VCSEL, therefore generating an aggregated data rate of 20 Gbps OOK signal. A receiver sensitivity of -13.36 dBm is experimentally achieved. Through extinction ratio optimization, an error free transmission over 24.7 km single mode fibre is attained, with a transmission penalty of 1.91 dB. Our proposed technique alleviates band-limitation of the VCSEL carrier, and doubles the channel data rate without replacing the transmitter optics.

Remote Optical Frequency Up-converter based on Optoelectronic Oscillator
摘要: A remote optical frequency up-converter utilizing an electro-absorption modulator based optoelectronic oscillator (EAM-OEO) for radio-over-fiber (RoF) application is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed remote optical frequency up-converter has no data leakage from optical baseband signal and no phase noise degradation stemming from optical baseband data leakage because the optical baseband signal is optically isolated from the OEO feedback loop by an optical band pass filter. Compared with the conventional remote optical frequency up-converter based on an EAM-OEO, the proposed system shows improved phase noise characteristics and receiver sensitivity.
