  • Silver Nanoparticles - Fabrication, Characterization and Applications || Synthesis and Optical Properties of Highly Stabilized Peptide- Coated Silver Nanoparticles

    摘要: The interaction between the silver nanoparticle and peptide surfaces has been of increased interest for the applications of bionanotechnology and tissue engineering. In order to completely understand such interactions, we have examined the optical properties of peptide-coated silver nanoparticles. However, the effect of peptide binding motif upon the silver nanoparticles surface characteristics and physicochemical properties of these nanoparticles remains incompletely understood. Here, we have fabricated sodium citrate stabilized silver nanoparticles and coated with peptide IVD (ID3). The optical properties of these peptide-capped nanomaterials were characterized by UV-visible, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and z-potential measurement. The results indicate that the interface of silver nanoparticles (AgNP)-peptide is generated using ID3 peptide and sug-gested that the reactivity of peptide is governed by the conformation of the bound pep-tide on the silver nanoparticle surface. The interactions of peptide-nanoparticle would potentially be used to fabricate specific functionality into the various peptide-capped nanomaterials and antibacterial applications.

  • Adjustable Optical Transmittance of Superhydrophobic Carbon Soot Coatings by in-situ Single-step Control of their Physicochemical Profile

    摘要: Soot aerosol formation in the ambient atmosphere, due to inappropriate and incomplete incineration of various fossil fuels or waste materials, has been considered as one of the major anthropogenic contributions to the global warming. However, despite of their adverse environmental impact, the soot nanoparticles are extremely useful in many practical applications if deposited as coatings, since they impart superhydrophobicity of the hosting solid substrate. Here, we unveil novel experimental results on the optical transmittance of superhydrophobic soot coatings with three different physicochemical profiles, synthesized by controlling the atmospheric air flow rate during the combustion of rapeseed oil. The in-depth morphological, chemical and optical analyses using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and spectrophotometry, show relation among the thickness, chemical bonds, morphology and light transmission coefficient (T %) of the soot. In turn, at equal film thicknesses, the gradual decrease of π bonds in the material leads to enhanced light transmittance in the NIR range, while the soot morphology regulates the width of the spectral region with T ?0 %. Our findings demonstrate interconnection between the combustion conditions and the derivative physicochemical properties of the soot coatings, allowing single-step adjustment of their optical behavior, possibly for future underwater optical applications.

  • Degradation kinetics of anthocyanin and physicochemical changes in fermented turnip juice exposed to pulsed UV light

    摘要: In this study, the effects of pulsed UV (PUV) light on the degradation kinetics of anthocyanins and physicochemical properties of turnip juice were investigated. PUV light was applied to turnip juice at 3 different distances (5, 8, 13 cm) from the quartz window of the xenon lamp for 5 different times (5, 15, 30, 45, 60 s). The pH, total acidity (% lactic acid), monomeric anthocyanin content, color density, hue, brightness, and percent color components (yellow, red, and blue) of turnip juice changed significantly after PUV-light treatments at each level. The maximum degradation of anthocyanin after PUV-light treatments was found to be about 63%. The anthocyanin degradation, brightness, yellow and blue color (%) increased, while red color (%) decreased with longer treatment time and shorter distance. The degradation of monomeric anthocyanins in turnip juice exposed to PUV light was described by the Weibull model (R2 0.982–0.998, RMSE 0.087–0.133) more accurately than the first-order kinetics (R2 0.906–0.992, RMSE 0.071–0.192).

  • Graphene Oxide as an Optical Biosensing Platform: A Progress Report

    摘要: A few years ago, crucial graphene oxide (GO) features such as the carbon/oxygen ratio, number of layers, and lateral size were scarcely investigated and, thus, their impact on the overall optical biosensing performance was almost unknown. Nowadays valuable insights about these features are well documented in the literature, whereas others remain controversial. Moreover, most of the biosensing systems based on GO were amenable to operating as colloidal suspensions. Currently, the literature reports conceptually new approaches obviating the need of GO colloidal suspensions, enabling the integration of GO onto a solid phase and leading to their application in new biosensing devices. Furthermore, most GO-based biosensing devices exploit photoluminescent signals. However, further progress is also achieved in powerful label-free optical techniques exploiting GO in biosensing, particularly using optical fibers, surface plasmon resonance, and surface enhanced Raman scattering. Herein, a critical overview on these topics is offered, highlighting the key role of the physicochemical properties of GO. New challenges and opportunities in this exciting field are also highlighted.
