  • Leaf Area Estimation of Reconstructed Maize Plants Using a Time-of-Flight Camera Based on Different Scan Directions

    摘要: The leaf area is an important plant parameter for plant status and crop yield. In this paper, a low-cost time-of-flight camera, the Kinect v2, was mounted on a robotic platform to acquire 3-D data of maize plants in a greenhouse. The robotic platform drove through the maize rows and acquired 3-D images that were later registered and stitched. Three different maize row reconstruction approaches were compared: reconstruct a crop row by merging point clouds generated from both sides of the row in both directions, merging point clouds scanned just from one side, and merging point clouds scanned from opposite directions of the row. The resulted point cloud was subsampled and rasterized, the normals were computed and re-oriented with a Fast Marching algorithm. The Poisson surface reconstruction was applied to the point cloud, and new vertices and faces generated by the algorithm were removed. The results showed that the approach of aligning and merging four point clouds per row and two point clouds scanned from the same side generated very similar average mean absolute percentage error of 8.8% and 7.8%, respectively. The worst error resulted from the two point clouds scanned from both sides in opposite directions with 32.3%.

    摘要: Estimations of convection and radiation cavity losses in two common CSP applications have been analyzed; a cavity in a solar tower plant for high temperature (800 K) and in a down facing cavity in a Fresnel configuration for medium temperature (350 K) applications. An analysis regarding the effect of the configuration, geometry and the presence of wind has been also carried out.

    摘要: This paper gives an idea of how a combination of image processing along with bioinformatics detects deadly diseases in plants and agricultural crops. These kinds of diseases are not recognizable by bare human eyesight. First occurrence of these diseases is microscopic in nature. If plants are affected with such kind of diseases, there is deterioration in the quality of production of the plants. We need to correctly identify the symptoms, treat the diseases, and improve the production quality. Computers can help to make correct decision as well as can support industrialization of the detection work. We present in this paper a technique for image segmentation using HSI algorithm to classify various categories of diseases. This technique can also classify different types of plant diseases as well. GA has always proven itself to be very useful in image segmentation.

    摘要: High throughput phenotyping is rapidly gaining widespread popularity due to its ability to non-destructively extract plant traits, such as plant height, canopy density, leaf and plant structure, and so on. In this study, we focus on developing a UAV-based LiDAR system to acquire accurate time-series 3D point clouds for monitoring two specific plant traits – plant height and canopy cover – which are integral for enhancing crop genetic improvement to meet the needs of future generations. Furthermore, the obtained estimates are validated by comparing the results with those obtained from wheel-based LiDAR data.

  • Evaluating Two Optical Methods of Woody-to-Total Area Ratio with Destructive Measurements at Five Larix gmelinii Rupr. Forest Plots in China

    摘要: Accurate in situ leaf area index (LAI) estimates of forest plots are required to validate currently-used LAI map products. Woody-to-total area ratio (α) is a crucial parameter in converting the plant area index estimates of forest plots obtained by optical methods into LAI. Although optical methods for estimating the α of forest canopy have been proposed, their performance has never been assessed. In this study, five Larix gmelinii Rupr. forest plots with contrasting plot characteristics (i.e., tree age, tree height, management activities, stand density, and site conditions) were selected. The performance of two commonly used optical methods, namely, multispectral canopy imager (MCI) and digital hemispherical photography (DHP), in estimating the α of L. gmelinii forest plots was evaluated by using the reference α of the selected forest plots. The reference α of forest plots was measured via destructive method by harvesting two or three representative trees in each plot. Large variations were observed amongst the reference α of the selected forest plots (ranging from 0% to 56%). These α were also highly correlated with the site conditions and management activities in these plots. The effective α (αe) or α estimated using the leaf-on and leaf-off periods MCI or DHP images with or without consideration of the clumping effects of canopy element and woody components were 1.57 to 4.63 times the reference α in the five plots. The overestimation of α or αe was mainly caused by the preferential shading of woody components by the shoots in the leaf-on canopy. Accurate α estimates for the L. gmelinii forest plots with errors of less than 20% can be obtained from MCI when the clumping effects of canopy element and woody components are considered in the estimation.

  • Evaluating Leaf and Canopy Reflectance of Stressed Rice Plants to Monitor Arsenic Contamination

    摘要: Arsenic contamination is a serious problem in rice cultivated soils of many developing countries. Hence, it is critical to monitor and control arsenic uptake in rice plants to avoid adverse effects on human health. This study evaluated the feasibility of using re?ectance spectroscopy to monitor arsenic in rice plants. Four arsenic levels were induced in hydroponically grown rice plants with application of 0, 5, 10 and 20 μmol¨ L′1 sodium arsenate. Re?ectance spectra of upper fully expanded leaves were acquired over visible and infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Additionally, canopy re?ectance for the four arsenic levels was simulated using SAIL (Scattering by Arbitrarily Inclined Leaves) model for various soil moisture conditions and leaf area indices (LAI). Further, sensitivity of various vegetative indices (VIs) to arsenic levels was assessed. Results suggest that plants accumulate high arsenic amounts causing plant stress and changes in re?ectance characteristics. All leaf spectra based VIs related strongly with arsenic with coef?cient of determination (r2) greater than 0.6 while at canopy scale, background re?ectance and LAI confounded with spectral signals of arsenic affecting the VIs’ performance. Among studied VIs, combined index, transformed chlorophyll absorption re?ectance index (TCARI)/optimized soil adjusted vegetation index (OSAVI) exhibited higher sensitivity to arsenic levels and better resistance to soil backgrounds and LAI followed by red edge based VIs (modi?ed chlorophyll absorption re?ectance index (MCARI) and TCARI) suggesting that these VIs could prove to be valuable aids for monitoring arsenic in rice ?elds.

  • Identification of Bacterial Diseases in Rice Plants Leaves by the Use of Spectroscopic Imaging

    摘要: Rice is staple in the African habitats menu. Bacterial wilt (BLB) and leaf streak (BLS) are some of the phytopathological diseases which restrain rice production around the world. In this paper, multi-spectral and multi- modal imaging techniques have been developed to characterize the rice leaves with symptoms of bacterial wilt (BLB) and leaf streak (BLS), and to provide information on their effects, in order to reduce their spread. First, we recorded microscopic and spectroscopic images of the samples using multimodal and multispectral microscope, with spectral region ranging from UV to NIR, for each mode. Then, we extracted the spectral footprints of the cells constituents, in transmission, reflection and scattering from the spectral images. Applying multivariate statistical analysis methods to this optical spectra allowed us to characterize the effect of bacterial rice leaves caused by Xanthomonas oryzae strains. The results of the proposed technique can be useful for easy identification of this type of infection, and can serve as routine approach in biochemical and agronomic laboratories.

    摘要: Lightning ground potential rise (GPR) was shown to be a significant contributor to equipment damage under certain conditions that include, in particular, high soil resistivity. In addition, IEEE Std 1692 suggested that surge protective devices (SPDs) may not protect adequately under conditions of lightning GPR. This paper follows on earlier work that addressed lightning GPR associated with large electrodes, loss of equipotential under conditions of GPR and a desk-top study on the behavior of a low voltage SPD under emulated lightning impulse conditions. The findings of a laboratory test on the behavior of an SPD under lightning current impulse conditions as well as in situ testing of an SPD under lightning current impulse are presented in this paper. The paper concludes by reflecting on initial findings from post-test monitoring under actual lightning, emphasizes the value of in situ testing and points out its limitations.

    摘要: In Kazakhstan, a number of measures have been taken to stimulate the introduction of renewable energy, one of which is solar energy [1], [2]. Until 2025, the introduction of solar power plants (SPP) will be 650 MW. When integrating solar panels with inverter coupling into electrical networks, a number of difficulties arise related to the stability of the voltage in transient modes. The converter voltage inverters do not have feedback from the voltage of the external power supply system. Power generation of SPP, as a rule, is only a function of solar radiation and does not depend on the network parameters [3]. In this regard, the actual issue is the introduction of adaptive controllers for controlling inverters, depending on the change in the mode parameters [4], [5]. In this paper, we present the results of studies on the modeling of transient regimes using the example of the SPP with an installed capacity of 2 MW. The virtual model of the PSCad analyzed the stability of the voltage in the event of a short circuit on the 10 kV bus, algorithms and mechanisms for using the intelligent controller for controlling the photovoltaic system were developed.

  • Near-infrared spectra quantitative analysis for flue gas of thermal power plant based on wavelength selection

    摘要: This paper proposed a near-infrared (NIR) spectra quantitative analysis method for flue gas of thermal power plant based on wavelength selection. For the proposed method, the self-adaptive accelerated particle swarm optimization is presented for determining the most representative wavelengths of NIR spectral signals and is combined with partial least square for predicting the various contents of the real flue gas dataset. The proposed method chooses the current own optimal or the current global optimal as the reference state randomly and accelerated updates of the flight velocity by the reference state, then the particle state is updated based on the new velocity self-adaptively. The experimental results of a real flue gas dataset verified that the proposed method has higher predictive ability and could overcome the premature convergence.
