  • A study of the effects of ullage during the burning of horizontal PMMA and MMA surfaces

    摘要: Experimental and numerical investigations of burning of horizontal surfaces of poly methyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate are presented. A burner used in this study allows for the fuel surface to be oriented horizontally at a given distance from the burner rim. One of the aims of this study is to understand the effects of ullage (distance between burner rim and fuel surface) on the burning rate of the fuel and the flame structure. In the case of poly methyl methacrylate, the surface at an initial ullage regresses during its burning, and in the case of methyl methacrylate, the pool level is maintained at the given ullage by supplying the fuel at the rate of its burning. Careful repeatable measurements of temperature and species fields are carried out. These reveal the structure of a small‐scale pool flame established over a polymeric fluid such as methyl methacrylate, and such data are scarce in literature. In order to complement the experimental results, fire dynamics simulator is employed to simulate the experimental cases. Flame structure and flow field in the gas phase have been presented and discussed. As the ullage increases, the burning rate decreases. This trend is explained using surface convective heat flux results.

  • Highly Efficient Quantum Dot Light‐Emitting Diodes by Inserting Multiple Poly(methyl methacrylate) as Electron‐Blocking Layers

    摘要: This work presents a new device architecture integrating multiple poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) electron-blocking layers (EBL) in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs). The device utilizes red-emitting CdSe/ZnS QD with a novel structure where multiple PMMA EBLs are sandwiched between a pair of QD layers. A systematic optimization of QD-LED structures has shown that a device including two PMMA and three QD layers performs the best, achieving a current efficiency of 17.8 cd A?1 and a luminance of 194 038 cd m?2. Numerical simulation of a simplified model of the proposed QD-LED structure verifies that the structure consisting of two PMMA and three QD layers provides significant improvement in electroluminescent intensity. The simulation provides further insight into the origin of the effect of the PMMA EBL by showing that the addition of PMMA EBL reduces the electron leakage from the active QD region and enhances electron confinement, leading to an increased electron concentration in the QD active layers and a higher radiative recombination rate. The experimental and theoretical studies presented in this work demonstrate that multiple layers of PMMA can act as efficient EBLs in the fabrication of QD-LEDs of improved performance.

  • Direct formation of gold nanorods on surfaces using polymer-immobilised gold seeds

    摘要: Herein, we present the formation of gold nanorods (GNRs) on novel gold–poly(methyl methacrylate) (Au–PMMA) nanocomposite substrates with unprecedented growth control through the polymer molecular weight (Mw) and gold-salt-to-polymer weight ratio. For the first time, GNRs have been produced by seed-mediated direct growth on surfaces that were pre-coated with polymer-immobilised gold seeds. A Au–PMMA nanocomposite formed by UV photoreduction has been used as the gold seed. The influence of polymer Mw and gold concentration on the formation of GNRs has been investigated and discussed. The polymer nanocomposite formed with a lower Mw PMMA and 20 wt % gold salt provides a suitable medium for growing well-dispersed GNRs. In this sample, the average dimension of produced GNRs is 200 nm in length with aspect ratios up to 10 and a distribution of GNRs to nanoparticles of nearly 22%. Suitable characterization techniques such as AFM and SEM have been used to support concept of the proposed growth method.
