1-to-N Ring Power Combiners With Common Delta Ports
摘要: In this paper, we present a new 1-to-N way ring combiner that is an adaptation of the ring-hybrid (rat-race) structure. We present the general design guidelines for N-way planar ring combiners based on theoretical analysis of the structures. The proposed 1-to-N way ring structure offers a compact, planar layout that includes a single common delta port. This is beneficial to applications where power monitoring, calibration, or energy recycling can be leveraged. It offers similar loss to other N-way structures. To demonstrate the combiners operation, we present completely passive structures and structures with embedded power amplifiers for 4- and 6-way variants. The designs are optimized for operation in the 5–6 GHz unlicensed bands. The passive 4- and 6-way combiners achieve IL of 1.3 and 1 dB, respectively, with associated port isolations of <?30 dB. The combiners with embedded amplifiers show similar performance and are validated using modulated signals and demonstrate good measured linearity when combining up to 6 amplifiers for output powers >1 W.

An ultracompact 3??1 MMI power-combiner based on Si slot-waveguide structures
摘要: Today, photonic integrated circuits (PIC) that work with a high-modulation speed (100Gb/s and beyond) are required to use more optical power to overcome the losses. One solution is to use a high-level laser with a hundred milliwatts power. However, for a microchip circuit, this solution can be problematic due to the non-linear e?ects and high cost. Therefore, to solve this issue, we propose a new design of a 3×1 multimode interference (MMI) power combiner based on a slot waveguide structure that can utilize slot-waveguide technology for reducing losses. In this study, the full-vectorial beam propagation method (FV-BPM) was used to ?nd the optimal geometrical parameters of the MMI coupler, inputs/output taper, and the slot waveguide structure. Simulation results show that after light propagation of 9.82 μm the beam combiner e?ciency can reach 97.6 % working within the C-band range. Also, to reduce back re?ection losses an angled MMI was designed using a ?nite di?erence time domain (FDTD) method and results show a low back re?ection of 40 dB. This unique design can lead to an e?cient and compact combiner for multiple coherent sources that work with PIC chips.

Contra-Directional Ridge Waveguide Couplers: Design and Applications
摘要: This article presents novel wideband contra-directional couplers based on single conductor ridge waveguide, and their applications. The couplers exhibit wide bandwidths and tight coupling while occupying very small volume due to the compactness of ridge waveguides. The methodology to design the couplers is presented. It is inspired by the even and odd modes used to design TEM coupled lines couplers but implemented with TE modes in this novel approach. The design starts with designing the coupling section in a quadruple-ridge waveguide that supports two independent even and odd TE modes. Proper choice of the cross section allows the designer to achieve the required impedance levels for the required coupling values. An S-band proof of concept prototype of a single coupler was synthesized, fabricated, and tested, demonstrating excellent measured results without any tuning. The couplers can be exploited in versatile applications, such as power sampling, beamforming, or high-power combiners. As an additional proof of concept design, a C-band three-way combiner was also designed and tested, showing the potential of the novel coupler for different applications.

摘要: This paper presents a comparison between different silicon (Si) substrates used in Si-based IC technologies at E-Band (71–86 GHz). A unique low-loss and compact contactless transition from a silicon IC (p-doped substrate) to a metal waveguide is used. The proposed transition incorporates a spatial power combiner to enable direct electromagnetic coupling from an array of patches on the IC to a metal waveguide. This design enables a high-power transition from an IC to a waveguide and/or antenna at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies, where a galvanic contact between the two parts is avoided.

Quasi-Octave Bandwidth In-Phase Three-Layer Platelet Orthomode Transducer Using Improved Power Combiners
摘要: A 64% instantaneous bandwidth turnstile-junction-based orthomode transducer (OMT) made up of only three layers in a platelet configuration is presented. Such frequency coverage, while maintaining a very much reduced number of layers, is accomplished mainly by incorporating an improved power combiner based on noncontacting matching steps machined in one layer. This solution makes a real impact on the compactness concept of these OMTs while maintaining an excellent electrical performance. An OMT in the 10–20-GHz band was designed and measured by obtaining a return loss of 25 dB, an isolation between rectangular ports of 50 dB, a cross-coupling of 45 dB, and an insertion loss below 0.2 dB.
