Mode-locked thulium doped fiber laser with zinc oxide saturable absorber for 2?μm operation
摘要: In this work, a 2.0-micron mode-locked thulium doped fiber laser is demonstrated using zinc oxide (ZnO) as the saturable absorber (SA) in a thulium doped fiber laser (TDFL). The ZnO nanorods was prepared by the facile hydrothermal method, and then embedded in polyethylene oxide composite film to form the SA. The laser is capable of generating soliton pulses at a central wavelength of 1945.45 nm with a 3-dB bandwidth of 3.47 nm. The pulse width is measured to be 1.395 ps, only slightly higher than the calculated transform-limited pulse width of 1.15 ps. The peak power of the generated mode-locked pulses is then calculated to be as high as 41.88 W, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 50.5 dB. The fabricated ZnO film in this work would allow the generation of mode-locked pulses, which could be useful for applications in spectroscopy and medicine due to the eye-safe and highly sensitive nature of the 2.0-micron region.

Burst-mode 500 ps fiber laser ablation in 304 stainless steel
摘要: A study on burst-mode 500 ps fiber laser ablation in 304 stainless steel is presented. A 500 ps pulsed fiber laser with burst-mode operation was employed as the light source in our laser processing system. Under different laser parameters, the ablation results were observed and compared with scanning electron microscope photos. As the burst energy was 8 mJ and the pulse repetition rate was 2 MHz, a relatively good hole quality was obtained. The superiority of burst-mode operation is also discussed at the end of this article.

Gain-switched Dy3+:ZBLAN fiber laser operating around 3 μm
摘要: A gain-switched Dy3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating at 2.943 μm is experimentally reported for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The laser was pumped by a 1.1 μm Q-switched ytterbium (III) fiber laser constructed in-house. A stable pulse train is achieved with repetition rates spanning between 25 and 100 kHz. For the repetition rate of 50 kHz, stable 183 ns pulses with an energy of 0.72 μJ and peak power of 4 W are recorded. By using a longer length of Dy3+-doped ZBLAN fiber, gain-switched operation was achieved at a wavelength larger than 3 μm.

Bright/dark switchable mode-locked fiber laser based on black phosphorus
摘要: Stable bright/dark switchable mode-locked nanosecond pulse fiber laser incorporating black phosphorus (BP) was demonstrated in the Yb-doped fiber ring cavity for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The high-quality BP saturable absorber (SA) was fabricated by the modified electrochemical delamination exfoliation process. The states between bright and dark pulse could be switched by simply adjusting the intra-cavity polarization states, and close agreement with the cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) models is present.
