  • X/Ku Dual-Band Single-Layer Reflectarray Antenna

    摘要: X/Ku dual-band single-layer reflectarray antenna is presented. The proposed reflectarray antenna operates in two separated bands with separate feeds. The reflectarray element is composed of a split ring with two phase delay lines and a phoenix patch. The split ring and phoenix patch are designed for operation at X- and Ku- bands, respectively. The split ring is selected as the lower frequency element because of the large enough internal space. The phase shift of these two elements does not depend on variation of external size, which provides a feasible method for designing dual-band elements. The lower-band phase shift is obtained by changing the rotation angle of the phase delay lines. The movement of the inner loop of phoenix patch provides the required phase shift for the higher band. The proposed element realizes 360° phase shift range in both bands. The reflectarray is fabricated and measured to validate the design. The measured gains are 22.9 dBi at 8.5GHz with aperture efficiency of 40%, and 28.8 dBi at 16GHz with aperture efficiency of 44.8%. Besides, the 1 dB gain bandwidths are 20.5%(7.9GHz-9.7GHz) at lower band and 13.3 %(14.7GHz-16.8GHz) at higher band.

  • Dual-Layer Single-Varactor Driven Reflectarray Cell for Broad-Band Beam-Steering and Frequency Tunable Applications

    摘要: A dual-layer active reflectarray configuration is proposed for broad-band beam-steering and/or frequency-tunable applications. A unit cell composed by two stacked fixed-size rectangular patches, properly loaded with a single varactor diode, is designed to realize the dynamic phase tuning mechanism. The proposed approach offers wider bandwidths, with respect to the existing varactor-based reflectarray cells, and quite good frequency reconfigurability features, as demanded by several radar or satellite communication applications. An X-band reflectarray cell is fabricated and tested, to prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach, achieving a 318° phase agility within a measured frequency range of about 14.6% with respect to the central design frequency (i.e., 11 GHz). Wideband beam-steering reflectarray designs are demonstrated, showing 1-dB gain bandwidths equal to 9–10%.

  • Scattered EM-wave Shaping Using Combination of Cross Polarization Conversion and Reflection Phase Cancellation

    摘要: The design of millimeter wave 1-bit coding engineered reflector for backscattered electromagnetic wave shaping by combining both cross-polarization conversion and reflection phase cancellation principles is presented in this article. The anisotropic unit cell of the presented engineered reflector can efficiently rotate the polarization of an incident EM wave to its orthogonal one at millimeter wave regime. Each unit cell has four inverted L-shape copper resonators on the top side of a PEC backed dielectric substrate. The proposed unit cell has three plasmon resonance frequencies at 87.3GHz, 90.1GHz and 91.8GHz with 100% cross-polarization conversion efficiency at these frequencies and more than 92.1% from about 86.7GHz to 91.9GHz. Moreover, if the proposed anisotropic unit cell (“0” element) along with its mirrored one (“1” element) are arranged in one engineered reflector, an 180o±25o reflection phase difference is valid between their reflection phases and engineered reflectors that can efficiently manipulate the reflected EM-wave and generates many kinds of scattering patterns such as two lobes, three lobes, four lobes or even a diffuse scattering pattern can be composed using only those two unit cells. Full wave simulation, fabrication and experimental characterization results are presented.

  • A shared aperture 1-bit metasurface for orbital angular momentum multiplexing

    摘要: In this letter, a shared aperture 1-bit metasurface for orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing is studied. A phased array antenna fed by the phase shift network is embedded on the reflective aperture of the 1-bit metasurface. The proposed device can work on reflectarray mode from 7.1GHz to 7.5GHz and phased array mode from 7GHz to 7.5GHz. Correspondingly, OAM vortex beam with topological charge l = -1 and l = 1 can be generated. The transmission coefficient between the two working modes is below -30dB and the envelop correlation coefficient (ECC) is quite close to 0, which reveals the excellent isolation and diversity performance. A prototype of the proposed device is fabricated and tested. The measured S parameters and radiation patterns agree well with the simulation results.

    摘要: This paper proposes novel design method of dual-band reflectarray using genetic algorithm (GA). Ordinary, each elements of reflectarray are designed to have desired reflection phase. However, when we adopt same polarization in dual frequencies, the element configuration designed to satisfy desired reflection phase in one frequency influences the characteristics in other frequency. Therefore, it is difficult to achieve dual-band reflectarray. To address the issues, we adopt two layer patches for element to increase flexibility of design and optimize the patches configuration using GA. As a result, we achieve novel reflectarray that reflect wave towards the direction of theta equal to 27 deg. and phi equal to 0 deg. in dual frequency simultaneously when incidence wave is coming from the direction of theta equal to 0 deg. and phi equal to 0 deg. in dual frequency.

  • A switchable terahertz reflectarray consisting of crossed metal dipoles set in a graphene grid

    摘要: A switchable reflectarray antenna composed of crossed metal dipoles mounted on a graphene grid is proposed for switchable radiation patterns at 1 THz. For an individual radiating element, the single graphene square loop works together with the metal dipoles to offer a corresponding phase response. As an entirety, the grid formed by the attached graphene loops is connected to a particular bias electrode for switchable operation. Taking the practical manufacturing technique into account, the graphene-oxide-silicon structure is used as the bias electrode. The simulated phase response shows that a phase range over 330○ is obtained by changing the dimension of the metal dipoles from 11 μm to 70 μm. The simulated field distributions and radiation patterns demonstrate that the proposed structure can deflect the normal incident plane waves in the predesigned direction when it is biased in a specific state. Once the bias is set to zero, incident plane waves are scattered into different directions.

  • High-Efficiency Planar Reflectarray with Small-size for OAM Generation at Microwave Range

    摘要: In this paper, a high-efficiency planar reflectarray with a small size 3.87λ0 × 3.87λ0 is designed, which can effectively convert arbitrary polarized waves to orbital angular momentum (OAM) waves with desired mode number and beam direction. The two concentric rings with a small size 0.38λ0 × 0.38λ0 compose the unit, which can cover the phase shifting range 360o by adjusting the ring radius. Though the developed reflectarray is much smaller than that of published ones, it can produce beams with the similar performance as large antennas. The advantages are as follows: high efficiency 22.6%, which is superior to published OAM reflectarrays, high gain 15.4 dBi, narrow divergence angle 9o, high purity, good stability, polarization insensitivity, planar structure, and easy fabrication. Using this reflective metasurface, we designed the following OAM beams: (1) OAM mode l = 1, 2, 3, 4 at (θ = 0o, φ = 0o). (2) l = 1 at (θ = 45o, φ = 180o). (3) l = 1 at (θ = 45o, φ = 270o). The above advantages are proved by the following analysis: (1) The magnitude and phase distributions in the near field. (2) The purity analysis. (3) The radiation pattern in the far field.

    摘要: Design and characteristics of millimeter-wave waveguide reflectarray antenna are considered. A specific feature of the presented antenna is a protective plastic cover that partially fills waveguides and, thus, provides additional phase correction as well. As a result, the waveguide reflectarray antenna has the relative bandwidth of 57% and 27.6 dB peak directivity. The proposed design allows manufacturing with the cheap laser-cutting and 3D printing techniques.

    摘要: Terahertz (THz) high gain antennas with electronic beam-scanning capability have been long required in various modern applications. In this paper, a novel reconfigurable reflectarray antenna (RRA) at 0.3 THz with 16×16 individually controlled 1-bit phasing elements is proposed. The element consists of a shorted bow-tie microstrip patch and a double-channel heterostructure HEMT in the middle. Electronic 1-bit phase control can be achieved by switching the state of HEMT. The element simulation verifies its wideband and low cross-polarization performance. Design and analysis of a RRA with 16×16 elements and practical biasing circuits are presented. The high gain beam scanning capability of the proposed RRA is validated by theoretical calculations.

    摘要: A single layer broadband reflectarray is proposed, which is capable of generating independent reflect beams according to the polarization. The reflectarray element is composed of two sets of paralleled dipoles overlapping orthogonally on the surface of the substrate, and each set of the dipoles provide phase compensation for the certain polarization. Independent phase distributions can be achieved respectively on the same surface to perform separate beams with an included angle of 30 degrees between TE and TM polarizations. Operating as a polarizing reflect-beam splitter, a broadband performance (11.3-13.1 GHz) is acquired in simulation and the measurement result is exhibited.
