  • On-chip single-mode CdS nanowire laser

    摘要: By integrating a free-standing cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire onto a silicon nitride (SiN) photonic chip, we demonstrate a highly compact on-chip single-mode CdS nanowire laser. The mode selection is realized using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure. When the pumping intensity exceeds the lasing threshold of 4.9 kW/cm2, on-chip single-mode lasing at ~518.9 nm is achieved with a linewidth of 0.1 nm and a side-mode suppression ratio of up to a factor of 20 (13 dB). The output of the nanowire laser is channelled into an on-chip SiN waveguide with high efficiency (up to 58%) by evanescent coupling, and the directional coupling ratio between the two output ports can be varied from 90 to 10% by predesigning the coupling length of the SiN waveguide. Our results open new opportunities for both nanowire photonic devices and on-chip light sources and may pave the way towards a new category of hybrid nanolasers for chip-integrated applications.

  • On-chip single-mode optofluidic microresonator dye laser sensor

    摘要: Optofluidic dye laser devices have great potential as coherent light sources for lab-on-a-chip applications such as sensing and spectroscopy applications, owing to their promising properties as wide wavelength-tunability, proper microfluidic integration, and an extremely miniaturized footprint. The wide emission spectrum of dye molecules and narrow free spectral range of ring resonators, make these lasers inherently multi-mode. In this article, two polydimethylsiloxane-based miniaturized optofluidic ring resonator dye lasers are numerically designed and investigated. First, multi-mode lasing from a single optofluidic ring resonator with a spectral linewidth of 10 nm and a threshold energy density of 2.2 μj/mm2 is demonstrated. Then, by exploiting two coupled optofluidic ring resonators and Vernier effect, single-mode lasing at a center wavelength of 566 nm with a spectral linewidth as small as 5.36×10-4 nm is achieved. Moreover, simulations demonstrate the sensitivity of 500 nm/RIU for the proposed dye laser sensor.

  • Lateral cavity enabled Fabry-Perot microlasers from all-inorganic perovskites

    摘要: Microlasers play an important role in the development of photonics and optoelectronics. As the rising star in the semiconductor family, all-inorganic lead halide perovskites (ILHPs) have been recognized as promising optical gain and lasing media. However, until now, achieving duplicable and single-mode microlasers remains a taunting challenge. Herein, we fabricated rectangular-shaped ILHP microsheets by the chemical vapor deposition method. The single-crystalline nature and the atomically smooth surfaces of the sample enable the achievement of lateral-cavity Fabry–P(cid:2)erot (F-P) microlasers. Speci?cally, the lasing characteristics including the wavelength, mode spacing, and Q-factors can be well-reproduced along the axial direction of the individual microsheet. By regulating the width of the ILHP microsheet, the desirable single-longitudinal mode F-P microlaser was eventually achieved. Our results provide an enabling coherent light source for optics-related applications.

  • Semiconductor Heterolasers with Double-Mirror Two-Dimensional Bragg Resonators

    摘要: A double-mirror two-dimensional Bragg resonator design based on structures of planar geometry, which is typical of both band-to-band and quantum-cascade heterolasers, is suggested. The distinguishing feature of this design is the coupling between longitudinal and transverse energy flows in two-dimensional Bragg mirrors. The eigenmode spectrum of the structure is described. It is shown that the proposed design can be used for synchronizing radiation emitted in lasers and laser arrays.

  • Dynamic regulating of single-mode lasing in ZnO microcavity by piezoelectric effect

    摘要: Realizing single-mode-lasing output while being able to dynamically select and regulate a specified resonant mode could bring revolutionary impact for laser technology, on-chip data communication, and optical sensing/switches. Here, we demonstrate a single-mode lasing achieved by the piezoresistive and piezoelectric polarization synergistic effect on an epoxy-encapsulated ZnO microresonator. Based on relative shifts of gain spectrum and the resonant wavelength, the lasing mode in a hexagonal ZnO rod can be selected and regulated dynamically within a certain range. The relationship between the corresponding applied strain and the tunable refractive index is analyzed in depth and discussed systematically. Our studies open up exciting avenues for constructing optical mode-phase modulator, high-sensitive optical switches and color-perceived optical sensing.
