摘要: A large size phased array is a powerful system for surveillance, but must be appropriately decomposed as subarrays for efficient digital beamforming. One fundamental question is how to configure a large array as subarrays to satisfy various signal processing requirements. This work deals with two basic signal processing tasks, synthesizing multiple beams at subarray level and adaptively suppressing multiple interferences. Two optimization criteria to jointly design subarray configuration and digital weights for subarrays are proposed. To handle the large number of variables in the optimization formulations, we propose an alternating minimization approach with low computation cost. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Modular Subarrayed Phased Array Design by Means of Iterative Convex Relaxation Optimization
摘要: Subarray design technique is widely employed in the design of planar phased arrays. However, it’s hard to obtain full coverage and good radiation performance with the given shape of subarrays and array aperture. In this letter, the subarray design problem is formulated as an iterative convex relaxation model and solved through some steps subtly. Besides, the scanning sidelobe level is adopted to retrieve the optimal configuration among the found solutions. Numerical experiments are carried out to assess the performance of the proposed method as well as the inherent superiority in adaptive beamforming.

Low-Complexity Multiuser Receiver for Massive Hybrid Array mmWave Communications
摘要: In this paper, we study the low complexity reception of multiuser signals in uplink millimeter wave (mmWave) communications using a partially connected hybrid antenna array. Exploiting the mmWave channel property, we propose a low-complexity user-directed multiuser receiver with three novel schemes for allocating subarrays to users. This receiver only requires the knowledge of angles-of-arrival (AoAs) for dominating paths and a small amount of equivalent channel information instead of perfect channel state information. For comparison, we also derive a successive interference cancellation based solution as a performance benchmark. We design two types of reference signals with the channel estimation method to enable efficient and simple estimation for AoA and equivalent baseband channel. Also, we provide analytical results for the performance of AoA estimation, using the lower bounds of mean square errors in line-of-sight dominated mmWave channels. Simulation results validate that the proposed channel estimation method is effective when employed in combination with a zero-forcing equalizer.

摘要: Known overlapped subarray antennas combine array elements in a complex corporate or space-fed beamforming network, resulting in reduced scan loss and grating lobes. In this paper we demonstrate an overlapped subarray antenna enabled simply by a low index metamaterial lens (metalens) over a 5 horn line array. The metalens was designed to spread the field from the horn element with an aperture field distribution that generates an element pattern with flat top and low sidelobes. The paper presents the analytical technique used in the lens design, shows predicted and measured patterns, and discusses challenges and opportunities for achieving wide bandwidth and full scan from a 2-dimensional aperture array with a metalens.

摘要: The forthcoming 5G communication system is expected to adopt millimeter-wave bands in order to satisfy the ever-growing traffic explosion. The coverage efficiency was proposed in earlier works to evaluate the beam-scanning capability and coverage performance of array antennas implemented in 5G user equipment. However, when multi-subarray configurations are introduced into user equipment, the coverage efficiency fails to reflect the coverage performance of each subarray under the influence of housing. In this paper, we use the effective beam-scanning efficiency to evaluate the coverage performance of a subarray covered by a superstrate. The results provide valuable insight into 5G mobile antenna design.
