  • Direct laser writing of birefringent photonic crystals for the infrared spectral range

    摘要: Infrared optical photonic crystals fabricated using direct laser writing, which is based on the two-photon polymerization of suitable monomers, have received substantial interest since the emergence of this process. Two-photon polymerization could be a disruptive technology for the fabrication of all-dielectric photonic crystals in the infrared spectral range, as it allows the synthesis of large scale arrays of uniform structures with arbitrary geometries and arrangements. However, all-dielectric photonic crystals that provide birefringent optical responses in the infrared spectral range have not yet been demonstrated using direct laser writing techniques. Here, the authors explore the form birefringence observed in photonic crystals composed of arrays of subwavelength-sized slanted polymer microwires. The photonic crystals investigated here were fabricated in a single fabrication step using direct laser writing of an infrared transparent photoresist (IP-Dip). A strong contrast of the cross-polarized re?ectance of photonic crystals as a function of the in-plane orientation is observed in the mid-infrared spectral range at λ ≈ 6:5 μm. This observation is indicative of an anisotropic optical behavior. Finite element based techniques corroborate the experimentally observed responses qualitatively.

  • Effects of two-photon absorption on pseudo-random bit sequence operating at high speed

    摘要: The effect of two-photon absorption (TPA) on all-optical logic operation in quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier (QD-SOA) has been carried out. We model the rate equation with the TPA effect for the logic XOR gate, AND gate, and, for pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) generation. The simulated results indicate that the TPA induced pumping increases the output Q-factor (quality). The results show that the quality of the output depends on the input pulse width and the speed of operation. The PRBS system can operate at 250 and 320 Gb/s but an increase in pulse width decreases the output Q-factor.

  • Multiphoton imaging for morphometry of the sandwich-beam structure of the human stapedial annular ligament

    摘要: Background: The annular ligament of the human stapes constitutes a compliant connection between the stapes footplate and the peripheral cochlear wall at the oval window. The cross section of the human annular ligament is characterized by a three-layered structure, which resembles a sandwich-shaped composite structure. As accurate and precise descriptions of the middle-ear behavior are constrained by lack of information on the complex geometry of the annular ligament, this study aims to obtain comprehensive geometrical data of the annular ligament via multiphoton imaging. Methods: The region of interest containing the stapes and annular ligament was harvested from a fresh-frozen human temporal bone of a 46-years old female. Multiphoton imaging of the unstained sample was performed by detecting the second-harmonic generation of collagen and the autofluorescence of elastin, which are constituents of the annular ligament. The multiphoton scans were conducted on the middle-ear side and cochlear side of the annular ligament to obtain accurate images of the face layers on both sides. The face layers of the annular ligament were manually segmented on both multiphoton scans, and then registered to high-resolution mCT images. Results: Multiphoton scans of the annular ligament revealed 1) relatively large thickness of the core layer compared to the face layers, 2) asymmetric geometry of the face layers between the middle-ear side and cochlear side, and variation of their thickness and width along the footplate boundary, 3) divergent relative alignment of the two face layers, and 4) different fiber composition of the face layers along the boundary with a collagen-reinforcement near the anterior pole on the middle-ear side. Conclusion and outlook: Multiphoton microscopy is a feasible approach to obtain the detailed three-dimensional features of the human stapedial annular ligament along its full boundary. The detailed description of the sandwich-shaped structures of the annular ligament is expected to contribute to modeling of the human middle ear for precise simulation of middle-ear behavior. Further, established methodology in this study may be applicable to imaging of other middle-ear structures.

  • The upconversion photoluminescence and temperature sensing abilities of Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-9PbTiO3 crystals induced by Er3+/Yb3+ doping

    摘要: Er3+/Yb3+-doped Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-9PbTiO3 ferroelectric crystals were grown by the high-temperature solution method. The micromorphology, phase structure, and upconversion photoluminescence of obtained crystals were analyzed and investigated. As the results suggest, the crystals displayed typical lamellar growth and possessed a pure perovskite structure. Excited by a 980 nm laser, the characteristic upconversion (UC) emissions of Er3+ were observed at room temperature. The luminescence intensity improved with the increasing of excitation power and reached its maximum at 1056 mW. Two-photon process was demonstrated at lower power range. As the temperature increased from 213 to 493 K, the luminescence intensity weakened continuously. An apparent difference in variation trend between two thermally coupled levels (2H11/2 and 4S3/2) was also observed, which was ascribed to the redistribution of electrons at two levels at the heating process. Based on this dependence, the temperature sensing abilities were examined with the help of the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. The absolute sensitivity SA increased in the measurement temperature range and its maximum of 0.0033 K-1 was obtained at 493 K. Moreover, low conversion from incident light into heat was also demonstrated, which indicates the feasibility for crystal luminescence at high power pumping. These results make Er3+/Yb3+-doped Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-9PbTiO3 crystals become a promising candidate in optical devices and temperature sensors.

  • A turn-on two-photon fluorescent probe for detecting lysosomal hydroxyl radicals in living cells

    摘要: The detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in biological systems and its imaging is of great importance. Among them, the hydroxyl radical (?OH) stands out as one of the most reactive, playing an important role in many physiological and pathological processes. Here we report a two-photon (TP) turn-on fluorescent probe with good selectivity and sensitivity towards ?OH. The molecular design of this naphthalene-indoline compound enables it to accurately target lysosomes in its non-fluorescent (“off”) state, where interaction with ?OH gives rise to the fluorescent (“on”) state and allows for the imaging of ?OH generation in living mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells. The present study provides an approach for improving our understanding of the role of ?OH in biological processes.

  • Observation of Acetylcholinesterase in Stress-induced Depression Phenotypes by Two-photon Fluorescence Imaging in the Mouse Brain

    摘要: Oxidative stress in depression is a prime cause of neurotransmitter metabolism dysfunction in the brain. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), a key hydrolase in the cholinergic system, directly determines the degradation of neurotransmitters. However, due to the complexity of the brain and lack of appropriate in situ imaging tools, the mechanism underlying the changes in AChE activity in depression remains unclear. Hence, we generated a two-photon fluorescence probe (MCYN) for real-time visualization of AChE with excellent sensitivity and selectivity. AChE can specifically recognize and cleave the carbamic acid ester bond in MCYN, and MCYN emits bright fluorescence at 560 nm by two-photon excitation at 800 nm. By utilizing MCYN to monitor AChE, we discovered a significant increase in AChE activity in the brains of mice with depression phenotypes. Notably, with the assistance of a two-photon fluorescence imaging probe of the superoxide anion radical (O2??), in vivo visualization for the first time revealed the positive correlation between AChE and O2?? levels associated with depressive behaviors. This finding suggests that oxidative stress may induce AChE overactivation, leading to depression-related behaviors. This work provides a new and rewarding perspective to elucidate the role of oxidative stress regulating AChE in the pathology of depression.

  • Up-conversion Luminescence Properties of Er3+/Yb3+ Co-Doped Oxyfluoride Glass Ceramic

    摘要: Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass ceramic samples were prepared by melt-quenching method utilizing nominal composition 52SiO2-8Na2CO3-16Al2O3-33NaF-3LuF3-0.15Yb2O3-0.03Er2O3 (in mol%). The spectral characteristic was studied based on Judd-Ofelt theory. Spectrum intensity parameters Ωλ(λ=2,4,6) were calculated on the basis of the absorption spectrum. The theoretical and experimental oscillator strengths were calculated according to the spectrum intensity parameters, and the root mean square deviation (δrms) of glass ceramic sample was 4.28x10-6. The parameters such as transition probability, decay branching ratios and level lifetime of Er3+ were obtained. Lifetimes of metastable level 4I13/2 and 4I11/2 in as-prepared samples are respectively 11.64 and 13.61ms which are suitable for up-conversion intermediate levels. Decay branching ratio of 4I13/2→4I15/2 is nearly 100% in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped oxyfluoride glass ceramic samples which can be used to produce 1543nm laser. Under the excitation of 980 nm diode laser, up-conversion luminescence is observed at the wavelength of 549nm and (653, 664) nm, corresponding to the radiative transitions of Er3+: 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2, respectively. The numbers of absorbed photons in the transition process of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped oxyfluoride glass ceramic samples are estimated at 1.99 and 2.06 respectively according to the relationship between the up-conversion transmitting power and the 980 nm LD laser power. It is determined that the transition process of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped oxyfluoride glass ceramic samples is two-photon absorption process.

  • Many-electron character of two-photon above-threshold ionization of Ar

    摘要: The absolute generalized cross sections and angular distribution parameters of photoelectrons for the two-photon above-threshold 3p ionization of Ar were calculated in the exciting photon energy range from 15.76 to 36 eV. The correlation function technique developed earlier was extended for the case when an intermediate-state function is of a continuum-type. We show that two-photon ionization of Ar near the 3p4 threshold to a large extent is determined by the (3p (cid:2)(cid:2)(cid:3) εd )2 two-photon absorption via the giant resonance. This many-electron correlation causes (i) an increase of the photoionization cross sections by more than a factor of 3; and (ii) the appearance of resonances in the exciting-photon energy range of the doubly excited states. The predictions are supported by a good agreement between length and velocity results obtained after taking into account the higher-order perturbation theory corrections.

  • Photoinitiator Free Resins Composed of Plant-Derived Monomers for the Optical μ-3D Printing of Thermosets

    摘要: In this study, acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) and mixtures of AESO and vanillin dimethacrylate (VDM) or vanillin diacrylate (VDA) were investigated as photosensitive resins for optical 3D printing without any photoinitiator and solvent. The study of photocross-linking kinetics by real-time photorheometry revealed the higher rate of photocross-linking of pure AESO than that of AESO with VDM or VDA. Through the higher yield of the insoluble fraction, better thermal and mechanical properties were obtained for the pure AESO polymer. Here, for the first time, we validate that pure AESO and mixtures of AESO and VDM can be used for 3D microstructuring by employing direct laser writing lithography technique. The smallest achieved spatial features are 1 μm with a throughput in 6900 voxels per second is obtained. The plant-derived resins were laser polymerized using ultrashort pulses by multiphoton absorption and avalanche induced cross-linking without the usage of any photoinitiator. This advances the light-based additive manufacturing towards the 3D processing of pure cross-linkable renewable materials.

  • NIR Emission Nanoparticles Based on FRET Composed of AIE Luminogens and NIR Dyes for Two-photon Fluorescence Imaging

    摘要: Near-infrared (NIR) nanoparticles (NPs) based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) were prepared by co-encapsulation of a red aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecule, 2-(4-bromophenyl)-3-(4-(4-(diphenylamino)styryl)phenyl)fumaronitrile (TB), and a commercial NIR fluorescence dye, silicon 2,3-naphthalocyanine bis(trihexylsilyloxide) (NIR775) with an amphiphilic polymer poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMA). The surface of the NPs, PSMA@TB/NIR775, was modified with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to increase the in vivo biocompatibility of the NPs. The PSMA@TB/NIR775 NPs showed a strong NIR (780 nm) narrow emission and excellent two-photon absorption property. Moreover, the NPs exhibited good monodispersity, stability, and low cytotoxicity. Under the excitation of a 1040 nm femtosecond (fs) laser, the emission peaks at 680 nm of TB and 780 nm of NIR775 excited by FRET were obtained. We utilized PSMA@TB/NIR775 NPs as fluorescent contrast agents for two-photon excited NIR microscopic imaging, and good NIR imaging effect of mouse brain vasculature was obtained with the imaging depth of about 150 μm. The FRET strategy by co-encapsulating AIE molecule and NIR dye will be helpful in preparing more narrow emission NIR probes for deep-tissue biological imaging.
