The study successfully demonstrated the synthesis of PDA-coated plasmonic NWs with enhanced optical properties and cellular uptake efficiency. The NWs were shown to be effective for label-free dark-field cell imaging, delivery of water-insoluble cargos, and photothermal killing of cancer cells, highlighting their potential for intracellular applications.

The method of 1D assembly does not permit precise control over the number of Au cores to be incorporated into each NW. The hydrodynamic size of Au@PDA NWs provided by conventional DLS analysis may not be accurate due to shape anisotropy.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study involved the synthesis of polydopamine (PDA)-coated plasmonic nanoworms (NWs) by sonicating citrate-capped gold (Cit-Au) NPs in a concentrated dopamine (DA) solution under alkaline conditions.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Cit-Au NPs of different sizes and Cit-silver (Ag) NPs were used as cores for the preparation of monometallic and bimetallic NWs, respectively.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
A sonication bath operating at 40 kHz at 100% power was used for the assembly process. UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometry, TEM, STEM, EDX mapping, DLS, and ICP-MS were employed for characterization.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The assembly process was monitored in real-time, and the products were purified by centrifugation. The cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, and intracellular applications of the NWs were evaluated using HeLa cancer cells.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The optical properties of the NWs were analyzed using FDTD simulations, and the cellular uptake data were analyzed using ICP-MS.
