研究目的
Investigating the degradation mechanism of Mg-doped ZnO (MZO) buffer layers in thin film CdTe solar cells when exposed to the atmosphere.
研究成果
The degradation in the efficiency of CdTe devices incorporating an MZO buffer is caused by changes in the interface properties at the MZO/CdTe interface and possibly also at the MZO/TCO interface, where secondary barriers can introduce further resistance to the carrier extraction from the solar cell. The MgO contained in the MZO films is highly reactive to the water vapour present in humid conditions, forming a Mg(OH)2 layer which changes the surface chemistry and surface work function.
研究不足
The study focuses on the degradation of MZO buffer layers in thin film CdTe solar cells when exposed to the atmosphere, but does not extensively explore methods to mitigate this degradation or the long-term stability of encapsulated modules.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study involved the deposition of MZO thin films onto glass substrates using magnetron sputtering, followed by characterization of their optical properties, surface potential, and composition before and after exposure to the atmosphere.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
MZO samples were deposited onto 1 mm thick soda lime glass and NSG TECTM C10 glass coated with a FTO TCO for device fabrication.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
An Orion 8 HV magnetron sputtering system, Varian Cary 5000 UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer, Thermo Scientific K-alpha X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy, Brucker D2 phaser desktop X-ray diffractometer, and an ambient Kelvin probe from KP Technology Ltd. were used.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The MZO films were deposited under varying conditions of oxygen partial pressure and sputtering power, followed by optical characterization, work function measurement, and XPS analysis to study the effects of atmospheric exposure.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The data was analyzed to determine changes in the surface chemistry and work function of the MZO films, correlating these changes with the degradation observed in CdTe solar cells.
