The study demonstrates the feasibility of using an anion exchange membrane in photoelectrochemical cells for simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation. The cell performance was improved with increased electrolyte concentration, ethanol concentration, and light intensity, although the maximum light utilization efficiency decreased with increased light intensity.

The ability of wastewater treatment and electricity output are still relatively small. Integrating numerous PECs may be expected to be a possible approach to solve this issue and meet the requirement of real applications.
The experimental scheme involved the construction of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) consisting of a photoanode, a cathode, and an anion exchange membrane. The photoanode was prepared by constructing a TiO2 film on carbon paper and sensitizing it with CdS-ZnS quantum dots. The cathode was prepared by depositing Pt black on carbon black coated carbon paper. The MEA was assembled by holding the cathode and photoanode with the anion exchange membrane in between. The performance of the cell was evaluated under various conditions including different electrolyte concentrations, ethanol concentrations, and light intensities.
