Investigating the direct laser melting method to fabricate fine linear-bead that can be potentially substituted for micro-wire.

1) The size and shape of linear-bead can be controlled by direct laser melting process through adjusting of laser process parameters and powder size. 2) Linear-bead having more circular cross-section with straight length has been obtained at lower heat input coupled with smaller particle size. 3) The hardness of the linear-bead increases with the laser power, and the hardness of smaller particle size is higher. The microstructural evolutions due to differences in cooling rate for given size and shape of linear-bead is main cause of hardness differences.
