To design a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) slot array antenna using metasurface for cube satellites to solve the size limitation and heavy weight of the antenna and improve the very narrow bandwidth, which is the disadvantage of the SIW antenna.

The metasurface SIW slot array antenna operating in C-band has been designed to solve the size limitation and heavy weight of the antenna. The bandwidth has been improved through the additional resonance mode of the metasurface. The overall size of proposed antenna was 6.75cm × 2.35cm × 0.37cm (1.07λ × 0.37λ × 0.06λ) at 4.74GHz, bandwidth 4.73-4.87 GHz (3.38%, |S11| < -10 dB) and the maximum realization gain is 6.58 dB at 4.76 GHz. It is about 1.78 dB higher than the gain of the conventional antenna. Our antenna can be used for cube satellites.

The SIW slot array antenna has a high Q factor, which results in a narrow bandwidth. The proposed antenna improves this but still has limitations in bandwidth compared to other types of antennas.
