The photoisomerization of 2EH4MC involves a multistep process including internal conversions and intersystem crossings, described as "S1 (trans, 1ππ*) → 1nπ* → T1 (3ππ*) → S0 (cis)". This mechanism is similar to other para-substituted cinnamates, indicating that the complexity of the ester group plays a minor role in the photoisomerization process.

1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
UV spectroscopy, laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy, UV?UV hole-burning (HB) spectroscopy, picosecond UV?UV pump?probe spectroscopy, and nanosecond UV?deep UV (DUV) pump?probe spectroscopy were employed to study the electronic states and photophysics of 2EH4MC.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
2EH4MC sample was purchased and used without further purification. The sample was vaporized and cooled in a supersonic free jet or molecular beam for spectroscopic measurements.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
A pulse valve, tunable UV laser systems, photomultiplier tube, band-pass filter, optical parametric oscillation/amplification laser, time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and channeltron were used.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The gaseous mixture of sample vapor and He carrier gas was expanded into the vacuum to generate supersonic free jet. The jet-cooled sample was irradiated with tunable UV laser light for LIF and HB measurements. Picosecond and nanosecond pump?probe schemes were used for lifetime and transient state measurements.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The spectra and decay profiles were analyzed to determine the electronic structures, isomer conformations, and decay dynamics of 2EH4MC.
