To develop ultra-stable and highly fluorescent heteroatoms-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for bioimaging that are resistant to fluorescence quenching caused by metal ions in biological systems.

The developed NS-GQDs exhibit excellent fluorescence properties, photostability, thermostability, and chemical stability, with low cellular cytotoxicity. They show extraordinary stability against metal ions, making them promising for bioimaging and biosensing applications.

The fluorescence intensity of NS-GQDs is sensitive to pH changes, decreasing by 64.4% when pH increased from 2.03 to 11.86. However, at physiological pH around 7, 71.8% of the highest fluorescence signal remained, which is still useful for bioimaging.

A facile hydrothermal method was used to prepare nitrogen-sulfur doped GQDs (NS-GQDs) from aspartic acid and cysteine.
