To propose and analyze a new type of multimode fiber, multicore multimode fiber (MCMMF), which uses coupled multicore structure to achieve high bandwidth.

The MCMMF design is highly attractive for making high bandwidth fibers for short reach applications. With further optimization of fiber designs and manufacturing process, bandwidth can be further increased, for example greater than 10 GHz·km at 850 nm, and greater than 3 GHz·km at 953 nm, which meets or exceeds the OM5 MMF bandwidth requirements for SWDM transmission.

The bandwidths of MCMMF that have been demonstrated so far are about 8.4 GHz·km at 850 nm, and 1.5 GHz·km at 953 nm, which are lower than the best OM4, and OM5 MMF (>10 GHz·km at 850 nm, and >3 GHz·km at 953 nm).
