To examine the influence of ancillary pyridyl acceptor groups on main donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) backbone of squaraine, two different A2-D-A1-D-A2 type squaraine dyes PQSQ 1 and PQSQ 2 were successfully synthesized. The main goal is to examine the structure-property affinity and intramolecular charge transfer properties.

Two novel NIR absorbing A2-D-A1-D-A2 type symmetrical squaraines PQSQ 1 and PQSQ 2 were successfully synthesized, showing red-shifted absorption and emission compared to their parent squaraines. These dyes exhibited negative solvatochromism, irreversible electrochemical behavior, and high thermal and photostability. The introduction of terminal pyridyl acceptor groups on the main D-A-D backbone significantly influenced the photophysical properties, leading to improved intramolecular charge transfer characteristics.
