To compare different algorithms (fitting algorithms and FFT) for determining the RMS value and the phase of AC signals with respect to their uncertainty contribution in metrology applications.

The research showed that fitting algorithms and FFT can reach similarly low uncertainties. Fitting algorithms provide more flexibility since the acquisition does not need to contain an integer number of samples. If the signal contains multiple frequency components, multi-signal fitting algorithms are more robust and should be used. The simulations were validated using an AC Josephson source.

The study assumes stable input signals for many seconds, which may not be applicable to very short input signals. The FFT-based approach assumes regularly spaced samples and frequency components and suffers from spectral leakage if the actual frequency of the signal is different from the frequency assumed by the algorithm.
