研究目的
The main objective of this study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between seasonal variations in serum folate levels in a population of Spain and the annual variations of solar ultraviolet reached in the localization.
研究成果
The results obtained revealed that subjects exhibited lower folate levels in summer than in winter not only with regard to mean values, but also with the proportion of subjects with folate levels below 3.0 ng ml-1. Over five years, this phenomenon followed a seasonal and annual pattern not only at population but also at individual level. This demonstrates that a relationship exists between season and folate levels. Folate levels close to 4.0 ng ml-1 in winter are a predictor of folate deficiency in summer.
研究不足
The sample was composed of patients who visited their general practitioner for medical examination who were referred for folate determination. Therefore, it was a sample of vulnerable subjects and, despite the heterogeneity of the sample, the external validity of the results obtained is limited to potentially unhealthy subjects. Another limitation of the study was the lack of individual UV exposure and dietary data collected from the study participants.
