This review elucidates with the preface of the uniqueness of nanoscience and technology. The basic phenomena involved in this new area of science have been analyzed. The characteristics of the nanomaterials, especially the transition metal oxides (e.g., physical and chemical properties) have been studied. This paper also presents a brief description of zinc oxide, its crystallographic structure, effect of defects, bandgap engineering etc. The introduction has been extended on fundamental characteristics of specific compounds through which the structural, morphological, optical, photocatalytic and antibacterial properties are discussed. The description has been carried out by the mechanism of photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanomaterials on the organic pollutant Rhodamine (RhB).
