To summarize the progress in the study of gaseous ion mobility, diffusion, and reaction over the past 120 years and to outline future research directions.

Significant progress has been made in understanding gaseous ion mobility, diffusion, and reaction, but much research remains, especially in molecular systems. Future work should focus on advancing kinetic theory for molecular systems and utilizing models to interpret new data from combined IMS and MS techniques.

The understanding of molecular ion–neutral systems is not as advanced as for atomic systems. The application of rigorous kinetic theory is currently limited to systems where either the ion or the neutral is diatomic and the other is atomic.
