研究目的
Investigating the influence of lateral methyl and terminal substituents on the mesophase behaviour of four rings azo-ester liquid crystal compounds.
研究成果
The lateral methyl substitution and terminal polar groups significantly influence mesophase behavior, with nematic phase predominance and high stability. Electron-donating and withdrawing substituents cause redshifts in UV-vis spectra. Comparisons with previous series show enhancements in nematic stability for certain homologues. The research provides insights into molecular design for liquid crystal applications, suggesting further studies on other substituents or chain lengths.
研究不足
Thermal instability of lower Br- and NO2-substituted homologues with short alkoxy chains prevented DSC detection, relying only on PLM. The study is limited to specific substituents and chain lengths; broader variations were not explored. Potential optimization in synthesis yield or purity control.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study involved synthesizing five homologous series of liquid crystal compounds with variations in alkoxy chain length and terminal substituents. Mesophase behavior was analyzed using DSC for thermal properties and PLM for phase identification. UV-vis spectroscopy was used for optical properties.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Compounds were synthesized with alkoxy chains of 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 carbons, and substituents X = CH3O, CH3, H, Br, NO
3:Purity was checked via TLC. List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Equipment included Perkin-Elmer B25 IR spectrophotometer, Varian EM 350 L NMR, TA Instruments Q20 DSC, Wild PLM with Mettler FP82HT hot stage, Shimadzu UV-vis-310PC spectrophotometer, Shimadzu TGA-50H thermal analyzer. Chemicals from Fluka, MP Biomedicals, BDH, Aldrich, E. Merck.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Synthesis involved multi-step reactions including diazotization, esterification, hydrolysis, and coupling using DCC/DMAP. DSC measurements at 10°C/min heating rate under nitrogen. PLM for texture observation. TGA for thermal stability. UV-vis in dichloromethane solution.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Transition temperatures and enthalpies from DSC, phase identification from PLM, thermal degradation from TGA, absorption spectra from UV-vis. Statistical analysis for van der Veen correlations.
