  • Temperature dependence simulation and characterization for InP/InGaAs avalanche photodiodes

    摘要: Based on the newly proposed temperature dependent dead space model, the breakdown voltage and bandwidth of InP/InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD) have been investigated in the temperature range from -50°C to 100°C. It was demonstrated that our proposed model is consistent with the experimental results. Our work may provide a guidance to the design of APDs with controllably low temperature coefficient.

  • Silver nanoparticles with reduced graphene oxide for surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopy of DNA constituents

    摘要: Composite of silver nanoparticles with reduced graphene oxide flakes is proposed for surface enhanced vibrational spectroscopy, particularly for detection of adenine and thymine as constituents of deoxyribonucleic acid. Composite was formed by original method implying simultaneous reduction of silver ions and graphene oxide by discharge plasma at the gas–liquid interface. Combination of nanosized silver with reduced graphene oxide provided greater enhancement of Raman light scattering and infrared light absorption in comparison with separately used components. Addition of the composite to water solutions of adenine and thymine allowed detection of these analytes at micromolar concentrations. Composite of nano-silver with reduced graphene oxide can be prospective for surface enhanced spectroscopy as an alternative to the expensive lithographically prepared noble metal substrates.

  • Study on the enhancement of photocatalytic environment purification through ubiquitous-red-clay loading

    摘要: Tungsten oxide (WO3) is regarded as a promising visible-light-sensitive photocatalyst, but its activity is not high. Further enhancement of its activity has been anticipated using techniques such as loading of a cocatalyst to apply the oxide to indoor environmental remediation; Pt has been reported as a good cocatalyst for WO3 photocatalysis. However, Pt is precious and expensive metal. Thus, in this study, we sought to find a ubiquitous cocatalyst and suitable photocatalyst system. As a result, this study revealed that loading a ubiquitous material of red-clay enhanced WO3 photocatalytic activity remarkably. As photocatalyst samples, mixtures consisting of the clay and WO3 with different weight ratios were prepared using a simple kneading method. Their photocatalytic activity was evaluated from decomposition of harmful organic contaminant, 2-propanol into CO2 under visible-light irradiation. The WO3 with 10% of the clay loading showed the highest activity among the samples and much higher activity than pure WO3. This higher activity might derive from the clay’s promotion of H2O2 decomposition and charge separation (holes and electrons). The H2O2 was generated from photocatalytic O2 reduction. This formation and accumulation on the pure WO3 surface led to decreased activity.

  • Characterization, optical and luminescence features of cobalt ions in multi-component PbO Al2O3TeO2GeO2SiO2 glass ceramics

    摘要: Glass ceramics of the composition PbOeAl2O3eTeO2eGeO2eSiO2 doped with CoO (ranging between 0 and 1.0 mol %) were prepared by melt quenching technique followed by heat treatment. The techniques such as XRD, SEM, EDS and DTA were employed for the characterization of the prepared samples. Conventional spectroscopic studies viz., optical absorption, photoluminescence, FTIR and Raman were also performed on these samples. The optical absorption spectra of the titled glass ceramics exhibited two principal absorption bands, one at about 594 nm and the second one consisting of multiplets with the meta centre at about 1455 nm ascribed to the 4A2 (4F) → 4T1 (4P) and 4A2 (4F) → 4T1 (4F) transitions of tetrahedrally coordinated Co2+ ions, respectively. Besides these, the spectra also exhibited two feeble bands at about 532 and 643 nm which are the characteristics of octahedrally coordinated Co2+ and Co3+ ions, respectively. Using Tanabe Sugano diagram the crystal field splitting parameter Dq, Racah parameters B, C and nephelauxetic ratio, β were evaluated for Co2+ ions. The photoluminescence spectra of the titled glass ceramics have exhibited two broad emission bands at 628 and 870 nm ascribed to 4T1 (4P) → 4A2 (4F) and 4T1 (4P) → 4T2 (4F) tetrahedral transitions of Co2+ ions, respectively. FTIR and Raman spectra of the titled samples exhibited various asymmetrical and symmetrical vibrational bands due to viz., silicate, germanate, PbO4, PbO6, AlO6, TeO4, TeO3 and CoIIIeO vibrations in the glass ceramic matrix. The spectroscopic investigations on the titled glass ceramics have revealed that if CoO is present in small quantities the cobalt ions predominantly occupy the octahedral sites in the glass network, whereas the tetrahedrally coordinated Co2+ ions are found to increase if the concentration of nucleating agent CoO is gradually increased up to 1.0 mol%. As a result the degree of depolymerization of the glass network decreases which in turn enhances its rigidity with increasing the concentration of nucleating agent CoO. From these investigations we report that the glass ceramics doped with 1.0 mol% of CoO are suitable for insulating devices as well as for photonic devices.

  • Effects of two-photon absorption on pseudo-random bit sequence operating at high speed

    摘要: The effect of two-photon absorption (TPA) on all-optical logic operation in quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier (QD-SOA) has been carried out. We model the rate equation with the TPA effect for the logic XOR gate, AND gate, and, for pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) generation. The simulated results indicate that the TPA induced pumping increases the output Q-factor (quality). The results show that the quality of the output depends on the input pulse width and the speed of operation. The PRBS system can operate at 250 and 320 Gb/s but an increase in pulse width decreases the output Q-factor.

  • Application of polar solvent effects in absorption spectra for determination of lowest electron-excited states of phthalide

    摘要: The optical absorption spectra of phthalide in polar (methanol) and nonpolar (n-hexane) solvents are recorded. The electronic phthalide spectrum was calculated by TDDFT B3LYP/6-311+G(d, p) using the polarisable continuum model. Based on an analysis of calculation data and the displacement of absorption bands in a polar solvent, it was established that the absorption bands of phthalide at energies of 3.51 and 3.96 eV correspond to singlet-triplet transitions to the T1 and T2 states, respectively.

  • Optically switchable bistable guest–host displays in chiral-azobenzene- and dichroic-dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystals

    摘要: Optically switchable bistable guest–host displays in chiral-azobenzene- and dichroic-dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystals (CA-DD-CLCs) are demonstrated. The CA-DD-CLCs in a LC cell treated by homeotropic alignment are initially in stable unwound textures. Given that all LC molecules in unwound textures are oriented perpendicularly to the substrates, the light absorbed by the doped DDs reaches the minimum value, which is considered the transparent state of the proposed CA-DD-CLCs. The CA-DD-CLCs are switched to fingerprint (FP) textures by illumination with ultraviolet (UV) light and can be switched back to unwound textures by illumination with green light. The optical switching between unwound and FP textures is based on the photo-tunable chirality of the doped CA via photoisomerization effect. The light absorbed by the doped DDs in FP textures reaches the maximum value, which is considered the dark state of the CA-DD-CLCs. Moreover, the performances of light absorption from the doped DDs when the CA-DD-CLCs are in unwound and FP textures is independent of the polarization of the incident light. Pattern information can be optically addressed (erased) in CA-DD-CLC cells by illumination with UV (green) light through a suitable photomask. The CA-DD-CLCs can be stabilized in FP textures for several tens of minutes in the dark environment. As such, the power is consumed only for the illumination of specific lights during the switching of CA-DD-CLCs between unwound and FP textures. Moreover, a transparent active matrix organic light-emitting diode (LED) display that is superimposed on top of a CA-DD-CLC cell embedded with a transparent light-guide film with suitable LED light sources for optical switching between unwound and FP textures, is proposed for augmented reality applications.

  • A Study of Two Dimensional Tomography Reconstruction of Temperature and Gas Concentration in a Combustion Field Using TDLAS

    摘要: Based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), two-dimensional (2D) distribution reconstructions of gas concentration and temperature are realized using an algebraic reconstruction technique (ART). The influence of the beam distribution and grid size on combustion field reconstruction is investigated to attain optimal reconstruction results with a limited number of beams. Under limited optical-path numbers, it shows that a better spatial resolution is attainable only when the laser beam paths are vertical and parallel to the symmetry axis of the combustion field. Furthermore, experiments with 16 beam paths using one and two flat flame combustion fields are carried out in different fuel-air equivalence ratios under room temperature. The results are in agreement with the simulation results, and the time resolution is less than 1 s.

  • Open-path Halon 1301 NDIR sensor with temperature compensation

    摘要: Halon 1301 (bromotrifluoromethane) is a kind of fire extinguishing agent in aviation industry. Volume concentration measurement of Halon 1301 is necessary in the design of aircraft fire protection systems. In this research, an open-path Halon 1301 non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor has been developed for in-situ measurement, a novel cavity-type absorption module was designed to get fast response and more compact structure. Experiment results show that measurement was remarkably affected by temperature. Therefore, temperature compensation algorithm was also studied in this thesis, which was proven to be effective within the range of 25 oC-105 oC.
