  • Dynamic quasi-distributed ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating array sensing enabled by depth-resolved dual-comb spectroscopy

    摘要: Distributed sensing plays an important role in many industrial applications. Sensor arrays consisting of identical ultra-weak fiber Bragg gratings can be applied to such scenarios by monitoring the optical spectral response of the sensors. Yet, the spatial resolution, the sampling speed and the supported number of sensors in the array are mostly determined by the interrogation scheme. While dual optical frequency comb techniques had been successfully demonstrated as a high-resolution spectroscopic technique in metrology, it had been beyond the reach of industrial sensing applications because of its high complexity and costs. It is proposed and demonstrated here that, enabled by a simple fiber-optic, dual-comb spectroscopy setup consisting of a fiber laser without frequency stabilization, interrogation of an ultra-weak fiber sensor array can be realized. High spatial and spectral resolution as well as kHz interrogation speed is achieved in both static and dynamic measurements. It is expected that our depth-resolved dual-comb scheme can measure hundreds of sensors response in less than 1 ms. It is also flexible to deal with targets closely spaced or farther apart from each other. This shows the potential of applying dual-comb spectroscopy to more and more industrial application areas.

  • L-band Wavelength-Switchable Dissipative Soliton Resonance Er-doped Fiber Laser

    摘要: The experiment reports a kind of L-band dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) nanosecond Er-doped fiber laser. The passive mode-locked L-band DSR pulse is achieved in a figure-eight structure by using the nonlinear-amplifying-loop-mirror (NALM). The repetition rate of pulse is 468 kHz. At the maximum pump power of 398 mW, the output power is 25 mW with a pulse energy of 45 nJ. By adjustment of polarization state in cavity, the output pulse can be switched among 4 different DSR states with central wavelength of 1572, 1585, 1590 and 1605 nm discretely, presenting different peak power and pulse width. We can determine that the adjustment of polarization state changes the loss spectra of cavity and the 4 DSR states operate in different balance points. The tunable DSR pulse duration is from 120 to 150 ns by increasing the central wavelength.

  • High-resolution temperature sensor based on intracavity sensing of fiber ring laser

    摘要: The principle and design of high-resolution sensors are of great significance in the development of fiber-optic sensors. In this paper, a general method based on intracavity sensing of fiber ring laser (FRL) for high-resolution measurement, and a high-resolution temperature sensing system is experimentally demonstrated. The theoretical model for intracavity sensing of FRL is presented. In the sensing system, a fiber-optic Sagnac loop is inserted into an FRL for temperature measurement, which performs as the filter and sensing head simultaneously. Because the filter characteristics of the Sagnac loop is modulated by temperature, the intracavity intensity-modulated sensing is induced for the output power of the FRL. With the method based on intracavity sensing, the temperature resolution level of the sensing system has been improved from 10-3 °C to 10-6 °C. The stability and measurement errors are also measured. The proposed method can be extensible to similar fiber-optic sensors to improve measurement resolution.

    摘要: Because of their numerous advantages and potential applications, fiber lasers have attracted considerable attention since they first appeared in the 1960s. However, the output power of the early device was small, which restricted its application to a great extent. In the 1990s, with the invention of the double-clad fiber, the output of fiber lasers was greatly improved, which was comparable to that of the bulk lasers. Moreover, the characteristics of fiber lasers such as compact structure, high efficiency, and high beam quality are far superior than that of the traditional rod lasers. Therefore, in recent years, fiber laser technology and its applications have developed rapidly, becoming a new hot spot in the laser field.

  • CFBG Based Bidirectional Mode-locked Fiber Laser Emitting Conventional and Dissipative Solitons

    摘要: We report on the multi-state soliton generation in a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) based bidirectional mode-locked fiber laser. In particular, a θ-shape associate cavity is designed to introduce reverse dispersion distributions in counter-propagation directions through the bidirectional reflection of the CFBG into the lasing oscillator. With a relatively compact cavity configuration, the clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions are managed into large anomalous and normal dispersion regimes, respectively. Consequently, conventional solitons (CSs) and dissipative solitons (DSs) can be emitted from the counter-propagation directions. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report of CS/DS generation in a CFBG based bidirectional fiber laser. This investigation can contribute to research community of multiplexed ultrafast fiber lasers.

  • Optimal output coupler grating reflectivity for Er/Yb fiber lasers

    摘要: We measure the output power of an Er/Yb fiber laser with twelve different SMF-28 narrowband output couplers and demonstrate experimentally that the optimal reflectivity is ~1%. The fiber laser efficiency with the optimal output coupler is ~38% at ~1546 nm. In addition, we successfully inscribe a similar output coupler in situ during laser operation with 800 nm femtosecond pulses and the phase mask technique. An output power very close to the optimal was obtained with the in situ inscribed output coupler. With a flat cleaved broadband output coupler, the efficiency is ~42%, which is the highest reported efficiency of an Er/Yb fully integrated fiber laser.

  • High-order actively mode-locked picosecond fiber laser and Poissonian single-photon source

    摘要: We propose a novel scheme of high-order actively mode-locked picosecond fiber laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation in a semiconductor optical amplifier, and experimentally demonstrate the 200th-order mode locking with repetition frequency of ~ 1.19 GHz and pulse width of 1.63 ps. The fundamental repetition frequency is accurately obtained to be 5.9639 MHz by spectrum analysis. Our laser is much easier mode locked and stabler than passive mode-locked ones. Taking advantage of the ultra-stable mode-locked laser, we obtain practical quasi-single-photon (QSP) source. Statistic analyses show that it approaches closer to the Poisson distribution at lower count rate. In our experiment, at count rate of 9.7 kcps or QSP emitting rate of ~97 kcps, it obeys a perfect standard Poisson distribution. The laser is convenient to be upgraded for higher-order mode-locked at repetition frequency over 40 GHz, which are suitable to generate high-speed QSP source for future quantum communications.

    摘要: Asymmetric soliton explosions are numerically demonstrated in an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on a lumped model. It is found that the explosion events manifest themselves when the pump strength is tuned to reside between stationary dissipative soliton and noise-like pulse regimes. Remarkably, although the initial conditions and the model itself are symmetric, the explosions occur only at one edge of the soliton, i.e., the pulse leading and trailing edges explode alternately. Our results pave the way for further investigation on the dynamics of soliton explosions in ultrafast fiber lasers.

    摘要: In this paper, cascade co-pumping Erbium/Ytterbium codoped fiber lasers (EYDFLs) are studied from a comparison view. A 976 nm pumped EYDFL with a 1018 nm auxiliary cavity are compared with EYDFLs cladding-pumped at 915 nm, 940 nm, and core-pumped at 1018 nm, respectively, in aspects as optimal fiber length, pump conversion efficiency, thermal effects, and Yb ASE suppression. The results show that cascade co-pumping is the most effective method among these cases in efficiency, stability, compactness, and cost-effectiveness.
