Uncertainty evaluation of an 171Yb optical lattice clock at NMIJ
摘要: We report an uncertainty evaluation of an 171Yb optical lattice clock with a total fractional uncertainty of 3.6 × 10^{-16}, which is mainly limited by the lattice-induced light shift and the blackbody radiation shift. Our evaluation of the lattice-induced light shift, the density shift, and the second-order Zeeman shift is based on an interleaved measurement where we measure the frequency shift using the alternating stabilization of a clock laser to the 6s2 1S0–6s6p 3P0 clock transition with two different experimental parameters. In the present evaluation, the uncertainties of two sensitivity coefficients for the lattice-induced hyperpolarizability shift d incorporated in a widely used light shift model by RIKEN and the second-order Zeeman shift aZ are improved compared with the uncertainties of previous coefficients. The hyperpolarizability coefficient d is determined by investigating the trap potential depth and the light shifts at the lattice frequencies near the two-photon transitions 6s6p3P0–6s8p3P0, 6s8p3P2, and 6s5f3F2. The obtained values are d = ?1.1(4) μHz and aZ = ?6.6(3) Hz/mT2. These improved coefficients should reduce the total systematic uncertainties of Yb lattice clocks at other institutes.

Technological Assessment of MEMS Alkali Vapor Cells for Atomic References
摘要: This paper is a review that surveys work on the fabrication of miniature alkali vapor cells for miniature and chip-scale atomic clocks. Technology on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) cells from the literature is described in detail. Special attention is paid to alkali atom introduction methods and sealing of the MEMS structure. Characteristics of each technology are collated and compared. The article’s rhetoric is guided by the proposed classification of MEMS cell fabrication methods and contains a historical outline of MEMS cell technology development.

On-line estimation of local oscillator noise and optimisation of servo parameters in atomic clocks
摘要: For atomic frequency standards in which fluctuations of the local oscillator (LO) frequency are the dominant noise source, we examine the role of the the servo algorithm that predicts and corrects these frequency fluctuations. We derive the optimal linear prediction algorithm, showing how to measure the relevant spectral properties of the noise and optimise servo parameters while the standard is running, using only the atomic error signal. We find that, for realistic LO noise spectra, a conventional integrating servo with a properly chosen gain performs nearly as well as the optimal linear predictor. Using simple analytical models and numerical simulations, we establish optimum probe times as a function of clock atom number and of the dominant noise type in the local oscillator. We calculate the resulting LO-dependent scaling of achievable clock stability with atom number for product states as well as for maximally-correlated states.

Frequency shift of an optical frequency standard as a function of probe modulation of the radiation frequency, pressure, and gas temperature in an absorbing cell
摘要: Frequency shifts of an optical Nd : YAG/I2-standard are measured in a pressure range of molecular iodine 5 – 22 mTorr and deviation of probe modulation frequency 480 kHz – 4 MHz for the hyperfine structure component a1 of the molecular iodine absorption line R(56) 32 – 0. The frequency shift of the optical standard is estimated under varied temperatures of a cell and cell finger, which determines the pressure of the molecular iodine vapour. The requirements are defined to temperature stability of the cell and its finger for obtaining high long-term frequency stability of the optical frequency standard.

Acousto-optic modulators for a controlled frequency shift of light beams in optical and microwave cold-atom frequency standards
摘要: A series of specialised acousto-optic modulators/frequency shifters based on paratellurite (TeO2) single crystals is developed for systems of laser cooling and frequency stabilisation of laser sources in optical and microwave frequency standards based on cold strontium, rubidium and caesium atoms. The methods of calculation and optimisation of the main parameters of acousto-optic modulators are considered; their basic technical characteristics are experimentally investigated in the spectral range of optical radiation 460 – 900 nm and in the frequency shift range of 5 – 400 MHz. The modulators have a high diffraction efficiency, low power consumption and the ability to work with linearly and randomly polarised optical radiation.

Transfer of Highly Stable Frequency Signals on a 150 km Fiber-Optic Communications Line
摘要: The results are presented for the study of an installation for transmission of a highly stable frequency signal with relative instability no greater than 4·10–17 on a ? ber-optic communications line over a distance of 150 km. The installation uses external modulation of laser radiation and active electronic compensation of phase noise. The installation makes it possible to provide synchronization or time scale comparison of mutually separated time and frequency standards that are a component of the highest-category time and frequency standards.
