  • Technical and Economic Performance of 1MW Grid-connected PV system in Saudi Arabia

    摘要: In this paper, a feasibility study has been done utilizing real time solar irradiance data for a 1MW grid-connected PV system in Qassim region in the middle of Saudi Arabia. The analysis has been done using both technical and economic indicators. Technical performance indicators are; Yield Factor, Capacity Factor and Performance Ratio. Economic indicators are; Levelized cost of energy and simple payback time. The simulation results show high energy productivity, and both technical and economic indicators are high compared with similar systems in different countries. Also, the greenhouse gas emission reduction has been estimated. The prices of PV modules and balance of system components are up to date. The analysis results proved the viability of the proposed system supposing there is no any governmental incentives or grants which could make big difference.

    摘要: PV power varies with the passing of clouds; these variations can affect power quality and system uniformity. PV system is combining with a storage device to mitigate the variations in power. During the fast movement of clouds causes sudden changes in power. Sudden changes can limit through ramp rate control. In this work employing a ramp rate control with energy storage system is capable of maintaining the system stability. This work is aimed to design a battery-based storage system integration with considered 500 kW solar photovoltaic power plant using ramp rate control method. The control scheme is tested and validated using MATLAB/Simulink environment.

    摘要: This paper presents the energy management for the home with the grid connected PV-battery system. The fuzzy logic controller is employed to control the power flow delivered to the loads. The objective is to minimize the electricity cost by managing the energy penetration from the PV-battery system to the grid. The fuzzy logic controller is developed in distributed scheme where each load has its own controller. The fuzzy rule is designed by considering the availability of PV power, the state of charge of the battery and the total loads power consumption. The simulation results show that the proposed system achieves a cost reduction of 13.9% compared to the system without the fuzzy logic controller.

    摘要: This paper present grid-connected Solar System to energize 3-phase borehole motors, the solar system will be the primary source of energy and the local electricity network will be used as back-up during the day night unfavorable weather conditions (cloudy or rainy days). The design solar energy system will supply the borehole motors with energy harnessed from the sun. The borehole motors that are to be supplied only operate during the day, hence this solution aims to take advantage of this by harnessing energy from the sun to run the motors. The process of converting DC electrical energy into AC electrical energy to be used by the load; will be managed by SMA inverters that will ensure that supply to the motors is as good as the one supplied by the utility grid.

    摘要: Z source inverters (ZSI) can perform single stage, buck-boost conversion and have shown to offer slightly higher efficiency over traditional inverters. However, ZSI controller unit becomes more complex when achieving all objectives of Grid connected solar inverter applications where Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), grid synchronization and harmonic reduction from output voltage and current are simultaneously implemented. The control concept used to achieve above objectives is that varying shoot through duty of ZSI while keeping peak DC link voltage at a constant value. Control structure is designed in synchronous reference frame with two cascaded loops as outer voltage control loop and inner current control loop to maintain power balance of ZSI which results constant peak DC voltage. Besides that, incremental conductance algorithm sets shoot through duty of ZSI to extract maximum power from solar panel at a given irradiance and temperature level. In this paper we present a simulation study of a grid connected ZSI along with Incremental Conductance MPPT method. The details of theory, operation, design and simulation results are included in the paper.

  • Investigations on Operational Characteristics of a PV Integrated Unbalance Distribution System for Energy Management Studies

    摘要: Background: Integration of solar PV presents various challenges in the power system, one such challenge is the variation in operational characteristics of the distribution system. Method: Solar PVs are installed at the distribution networks which are unbalanced in nature due to unequal distribution of load in each phase. The operational characteristics of distribution feeder alter with the increasing level of PV penetration, which includes variation in voltage level, power flow direction, change in reactive power and power factor. Such situation causes the distribution network operators (DNO) to face unprecedented challenge to maintain the quality of power. Therefore, there is a crucial need to recognize and quantify the technical impact that solar PV may have on the operation of unbalance distribution system to ensure the good quality and reliability of supply. In this paper, an 11/0.433 kV realistic rural distribution feeder of Indian utility is modeled to investigate the impacts of PV integration on the operational characteristics. A reformulated 3-phase Newton-Raphson (N-R) power flow algorithm is used for the solar PV integrated unbalance distribution system. Results: The results show that there are drastic changes in branch current loading, neutral current, power losses and power flow direction after solar PV integration. It is also observed that there is huge variation in bus voltage level, which is controlled by line voltage regulators. Conclusion: Such investigations are necessary before PV integration to the distribution network, which would help the utility engineers for monitoring, energy management, and planning studies.

    摘要: This paper proposes a new topology for a single-phase grid-tie two-stage DC-AC boost inverter for the application of PV systems that utilize high-frequency transformer (HFT) for galvanic isolation. In the first stage, a new single-stage high-frequency boost inverter (HFBI) is proposed to boost and convert the DC output voltage of the PV modules to a high-frequency single-phase square waveform and to realize maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The second stage is rectifier-inverter system (RIS) that interfaces HFBI to the grid. Therefore, a single-phase high-frequency transformer is used to link both stages and to provide galvanic isolation between the AC and DC sides. The proposed topology has many advantages such as increasing the inverter output voltage level, MPPT, high reliability, small size and lightweight. In addition, a proportional integral current control (PI) conventional is used to inject a sinusoidal current into the grid at unity power factor. The proposed topology has been verified analytically by using PSIM software and experimentally by using a laboratory prototype.

    摘要: This paper presents an approach to control a grid-connected, five-level, diode-clamped converter (DCC) with solar arrays directly connected to each capacitor of the dc-link. On one hand, the control of such converters is challenging as the voltage imbalance among the capacitor may affect the power controller. On the other hand, when dealing with solar arrays, the dc voltage is a key point considering that the efficiency of the array highly depends on it. This article presents a solution where both aims are fulfilled: the desired capacitor voltages, set by the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, are reached at the same time that these values are taken into account in the power controller. This is an unusual approach for five-level DCC that avoids the use of DC-DC stages, therefore it makes the system more affordable and avoids extra losses. Thanks to the capacitor voltage controller, proper power extraction from each solar array is achieved. The theoretical presentation of this approach is shown along with simulation results that validates its effectiveness.

  • Energetic, economic and environmental (3E) analyses and LCOE estimation of three technologies of PV grid-connected systems under different climates

    摘要: Recently, solar energy is considered as the most promising renewable energy source, due to the availability and advancement of the solar technologies. This paper presents an extensive energy, economic and environmental analysis of 2.04 kWp of polycrystalline (p-Si), 2.04 kWp of monocrystalline (m-Si) and 1.86 kWp of amorphous on microcrystalline (a-Si/μc-Si) identical PV systems installed on the rooftop of 20 different institutional buildings, located in various Moroccan sites. Based on the analysis conducted, annual results are predicted with respect to hourly meteorological data and performance characteristics of each technology are examined using energetic, economic and environmental indexes (3E analysis). Daily simulation results were compared with actual recorded data for one of the geographical site (Meknes city) and good matching between simulated and recorded data has been achieved to prove its validity. The energetic analysis has shown that poly-Si modules surpassed the mono-Si and amorphous-Si modules in terms of performance, capacity factor and conversion efficiency. Besides, economic analysis has been conducted to determine the discounted payback period and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for 20 Moroccan cities and the results have shown that p-Si, m-Si and a-Si/μc-Si offered the 20-city average of 17.1, 21.6 and 28.6 years payback period, respectively. Moreover, LCOE has been determined for each city and the results reveal that p-Si, m-Si and a-Si/μc-Si types PV modules presented the average of 9.02, 10.13 and 12.53 cent€/kWh, respectively. Finally, the environmental analysis has revealed that average of 1.316, 1.286 and 1.051 tons of CO2 per kWp can be reduced by adopting the p-Si, m-Si and a-Si/μc-Si PV modules in the studied locations. The findings confirm the potential of the examined technologies and elucidate specific conclusions for the practice of such systems under Morocco’s climate.

  • Analysis of transformer less inverter for PV applications

    摘要: To enhance the effectiveness and decrease the cost of a Photovoltaic (PV) system, the utilization of transformer less PV inverters is an option of expanding interest. In any case, this topology should be considered in detail, as it shows a few issues like effectiveness degradation and safety issues identified with the galvanic association between the system and the PV generator. In this research paper, a review of standalone and grid-connected PV inverter structures has been done. From one viewpoint, a few options in light of established structures have been introduced. At last parasitic capacitance in PV arrays and leakage current produced from PV systems are examined.
