  • High-<formula><tex>$T_\rm{c}$</tex></formula> Superconducting Fourth-Harmonic Mixer using a Dual-Band Terahertz On-Chip Antenna of High Coupling Efficiency

    摘要: This paper presents a dual-band on-chip antenna coupled high-Tc superconducting (HTS) Josephson-junction sub-terahertz (THz) fourth-harmonic mixer. The antenna utilizes a couple of different structured twin-slots to enable the resonant radiations at two frequencies, and integrates a well-designed coplanar waveguide (CPW) network for achieving good radiation coupling and signal isolation characteristics. The electromagnetic (EM) simulations show that coupling efficiencies as high as -4 dB and -3.5 dB are achieved for the 160-GHz and 640-GHz operating frequency bands, respectively. Based on this dual-band antenna, a 640-GHz HTS fourth-harmonic mixer is developed and characterized in a range of operating temperatures. The mixer exhibits a measured conversion gain of around -18 dB at 20 K and -22 dB at 40 K respectively. The achieved intermediate-frequency (IF) bandwidth is larger than 23 GHz. These are the best results reported for HTS harmonic mixers at comparable sub-THz frequency bands to date.

  • Analysis of a Fractal Josephson Junction with Unharmonic Current-Phase Relation

    摘要: In this paper, a fractal Josephson junction with unharmonic current-phase relation is analytically and numerically analyzed. This system has two, four, or no equilibrium points depending on the external direct current source and unharmonic parameter. The stability analysis of the equilibrium points is carried out. The inclusion of unharmonic current-phase relation in an ideal Josephson junction leads to an increase in the hysteresis of current-voltage characteristics. While the inclusion of fractal characteristics in insulating layer of Josephson junction with harmonic current-phase relation leads to a decrease in the hysteresis of current-voltage characteristics. The inclusion of unharmonic current-phase relation on a fractal Josephson junction leads to an increase in the hysteresis of current-voltage characteristics. The dynamical behavior map of fractal Josephson junction with unharmonic current-phase relation in amplitude and frequency of modulation current plane is depicted. For a suitable choice of modulation parameters of external current source, fractal Josephson junction with unharmonic current-phase relation can exhibit excitable mode, bistable oscillatory mode, and periodic and chaotic behaviors.

  • Uncertainty analysis for ac–dc difference measurements with the AC Josephson voltage standard

    摘要: A detailed analysis of the uncertainties obtained in ac–dc difference measurements with an AC Josephson voltage standard (ACJVS) is presented. For audio frequencies and for voltages less than 200 mV, ac–dc transfers with the ACJVS may reduce the combined uncertainty by factors of 2–10, compared with conventional methods based on thermal converters. Type A uncertainties are predominantly limited by the thermal transfer standard (TTS), or the digital voltmeter used to acquire the output voltage from the TTS. In agreement with earlier work, the transmission line is the primary contributor to Type B errors for frequencies above 10 kHz. A Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis is used to demonstrate how the uncertainties of transmission line impedance and on-chip inductance impact the accuracy of the rms amplitude conveyed to the TTS.

  • Analysis of a single-mode waveguide at sub-terahertz frequencies as a communication channel

    摘要: We study experimentally the transmission of an electromagnetic waveguide in the frequency range from 160 to 300 GHz. Photo-mixing is used to excite and detect the fundamental TE10 mode in a rectangular waveguide with two orders-of-magnitude lower impedance. The large impedance mismatch leads to a strong frequency dependence of the transmission, which we measure with a high-dynamic range of up to 80 dB and with high frequency-resolution. The modified transmission function is directly related to the information rate of the waveguide, which we estimate to be about 1 bit per photon. We suggest that the results are applicable to a Josephson junction employed as a single-photon source and coupled to a superconducting waveguide to achieve a simple on-demand narrow-bandwidth free-space number-state quantum channel.

  • Two-Dimensional Quantum Transport in Free-Standing InSb Nanosheets

    摘要: Low-dimensional narrow band gap III?V compound semiconductors, such as InAs and InSb, have attracted much attention as one of promising platforms for studying Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian statistics relevant for topological quantum computation. So far, most of experimental studies were performed on hybrid devices based on one-dimensional semiconductor nanowires. In order to build complex topological circuits toward scalable quantum computing, exploring high-mobility two-dimensional (2D) III?V compound electron system with strong spin?orbit coupling is highly desirable. Here, we study quantum transport in high-mobility InSb nanosheet grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. The observations of Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations and quantum Hall states, together with the angular dependence of magnetotransport measurements, provide the evidence for the 2D nature of electronic states in InSb nanosheet. The presence of strong spin?orbit coupling in the InSb nanosheet is veri?ed by the low-?eld magnetotransport measurements, characterized by weak antilocalization e?ect. Finally, we demonstrate the realization of high-quality InSb nanosheet?superconductor junctions with transparent interface. Our results not only advance the study of 2D quantum transport but also open up opportunities for developing hybrid topological devices based on 2D semiconducting nanosheets with strong spin?orbit coupling.

  • Grain Boundary Josephson Junction Harmonic Mixer Coupled With a Bowtie Loaded Meander Antenna With Zero-Bias Operation

    摘要: The high-Tc superconducting (HTS) bicrystal YBa2Cu3O7–δ (YBCO) zero-bias-operation Josephson junction (JJ) harmonic mixer coupled with a bowtie loaded meander antenna (BLMA) is proposed and studied at 0.21 THz. When the JJ mixer coupled with the BLMA, the maximal harmonic number increases up to 146 with the conversion ef?ciency of ?63.6 dB at the bath temperature around 4.6 K compared to a mixer coupled with a log-periodic antenna (LPA) of only a maximal harmonic number of 46 with the conversion ef?ciency of ?71.6 dB. The mixer coupled with the BLMA has a higher order harmonic mixing with a lower local oscillator (LO) power of 1.26 dBm, which further illustrates its superiority to that coupled with a LPA with the LO power of 5.59 dBm. The experiment veri?es the merits of the JJ harmonic mixer operating at zero bias as a promising device in terahertz regions.

  • Optimizing the Nonlinearity and Dissipation of a SNAIL Parametric Amplifier for Dynamic Range

    摘要: We present a quantum-limited Josephson-junction-based three-wave-mixing parametric amplifier, the superconducting nonlinear asymmetric inductive element (SNAIL) parametric amplifier (SPA), which uses an array of SNAILs as the source of tunable nonlinearity. We show how to engineer the nonlinearity over multiple orders of magnitude by varying the physical design of the device. As a function of design parameters, we systematically explore two important amplifier nonidealities that limit dynamic range: the phenomena of gain compression and intermodulation distortion, whose minimization are crucial for high-fidelity multiqubit readout. Through a comparison with first-principles theory across multiple devices, we demonstrate how to optimize both the nonlinearity and the input-output port coupling of these SNAIL-based parametric amplifiers to achieve higher saturation power, without sacrificing any other desirable characteristics. The method elaborated in our work can be extended to improve all forms of parametrically induced mixing that can be employed for quantum-information applications.

  • Slot Lens Antenna Based on Thin Nb Films for the Wideband Josephson Terahertz Oscillator

    摘要: An oscillator based on the distributed tunnel superconductor-insulator-superconductor junction with an ultrawide operating bandwidth of up to 100% of the central frequency seems to be a promising type of directional source of continuous electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz frequency range. In this paper, we propose a scheme of a terahertz oscillator integrated on a single microchip with a transmitting lens antenna with the slot structure in a 200-nm Nb film to radiate the signal into the open space. We also proposed and numerically simulated several designs of a planar slot antenna matched (in the input) with a Josephson oscillator and (in the output) with a silicon elliptical lens. The obtained results of the matching of the oscillator output power with the antenna of various designs operating in four frequency ranges: 250–410, 330–570, 380–520, and 420–700 GHz are presented. The antenna beam patterns and impedances are calculated as well.

    摘要: We describe a new generation of Josephson Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizers that generate programmable ac waveforms with an rms amplitude of 3 V and, at 1 kHz, have a quantum locking range greater than 1 mA. This system has two chips with a total of 204 960 Josephson junctions (JJs) co-located on a cryocooler. To test for systematic errors, we phase-shift by 180° the waveform generated by half the JJs (102 480 JJs) to produce an approximate null. The measured residual of 51 nV rms implies a relative agreement of 3 parts in 108 between the two halves of the system.

    摘要: We use a precision inductive voltage divider and a lock-in amplifier to extend the voltage range of a Josephson arbitrary waveform synthesizer with a maximum voltage of 250 mV rms to provide accurate voltage measurements up to 120 V. Experimental results show that the output of the JAWS can be extended to high voltages with uncertainties of a few microvolts per volt or less, depending on the voltage amplitude and frequency.
