  • High dielectric polymer and its application on electro-optical Kerr effect of blue phase liquid crystal

    摘要: We present a high-dielectric polymer with a lateral ?uorine group, and its dielectric constant exhibits larger than 20 at 1 kHz. This well-soluble polymer can solely stabilize blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) while reducing the operating voltage by 30% and increasing the Kerr constant by nearly 70.6%. The in?uence of the polymer’s dielectric property on the operating voltage is investigated based on the potential distribution. The theoretical result predicts that the operation voltage can be further reduced by 50% when the dielectric constant of the chiral dopant is the same as the high-dielectric polymer. The potential application of high-dielectric materials for the improvement of BPLC devices is foreseeable.

  • Spatial Separation of Carrier Spin by the Valley Hall Effect in Monolayer WSe <sub/>2</sub> Transistors

    摘要: We investigate the valley Hall effect (VHE) in monolayer WSe2 field-effect transistors using optical Kerr rotation measurements at 20 K. While studies of the VHE have so far focused on n-doped MoS2, we observe the VHE in WSe2 in both the n- and p-doping regimes. Hole doping enables access to the large spin-splitting of the valence band of this material. The Kerr rotation measurements probe the spatial distribution of the valley carrier imbalance induced by the VHE. Under current flow, we observe distinct spin-valley polarization along the edges of the transistor channel. From analysis of the magnitude of the Kerr rotation, we infer a spin-valley density of 44 spins/μm, integrated over the edge region in the p-doped regime. Assuming a spin diffusion length less than 0.1 μm, this corresponds to a spin-valley polarization of the holes exceeding 1%.

  • Optical quantum bit string comparator

    摘要: Quantum computation has attracted much attention and several quantum algorithms have been proposed in the literature. However, the hardware able to implement such algorithms is still a challenge. In this work, we provide an optical setup for implementation of a quantum bit string comparator, QBSC, for polarization-based qubit, using the non-linear Kerr effect. The QBSC is an important structure for implementation of conditional statements in quantum algorithms.

  • Depinning Field of Vortex Domain Wall in Wide Magnetic Wires with Asymmetric Notches Using Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Microscopy

    摘要: We examined the pinning and depinning fields of the vortex domain wall (VDW) in wide permalloy wires to better understand VDW dynamic behavior. Our sample device has differently designed notches at the center of a 2-μm-wide wire. The notch depth ratio ranged from 0.2 to 0.8, and the asymmetric angles of the notches are 45°, 60°, and 75°. The depinning field was found to have two distribution ranges, similar to how the depinning field depends on VDW chirality in submicron size width wire. Our results also showed that the VDW depinning behavior of a wide wire is the same as that of a narrow wire. The asymmetric notch angle affected the depinning field, which was similar to the results of simulation with 400-nm wire. This suggests that the wide wire depinning field is similar to that of narrow wire.

  • A novel proposal for all-optical compact and fast XOR/XNOR gate based on photonic crystal

    摘要: In this paper, we aim to design an all-optical device, which can perform XOR and XNOR functions in a single structure. The proposed structure will be realized by cascading two nonlinear resonant rings. The functionality of the proposed structure is based on controlling the optical behaviour of optical rings via optical intensity. The final structure has one bias and two input control ports, along with two output ports. One port acts as an XOR and the other acts as an XNOR gate. The maximum delay times for the XOR and XNOR gates are 1.5 and 2.5 ps, respectively. Therefore, the working bit rates for the XOR and XNOR gates are 666 and 400 Gbit/s, respectively.

  • Impact of Nonlinear Kerr Effect on the Focusing Performance of Optical Lens with High-Intensity Laser Incidence

    摘要: The rapid development of high-energy and high-power laser technology provides an important experimental means for the research of extreme physical state in the laboratory and for the design of large laser facilities for realizing inertial con?nement fusion. However, when the incident laser ?eld is very strong, the Kerr e?ect of materials a?ects the nominal performance of optical elements. In this work, the impact of Kerr e?ect on the focusing performance of an optical lens is studied by calculating and comparing the ?led patterns of focal spots for three di?erent incident laser beams together with three di?erent levels of light intensities. The traditional transfer function of an optical lens is ?rstly modi?ed according to the theory of nonlinear Kerr e?ect. We use the two-dimensional fast Fourier transform algorithm and angular spectrum algorithm to numerically calculate the ?eld distributions of focal spots in the nominal focal plane of lens and its adjacent planes based on the Fresnel di?raction integral formula. The obtained results show that the Kerr e?ect a?ects the focusing characteristics of lens, especially for the incidence of high-order Gaussian beams, such as Hermite-Gaussian beams and Laguerre-Gaussian beams. At the same time, the focal length and refractive index of lens also change the ?eld patterns of focal spots. The presented methodology is of great value in engineering applications where the practical problem with beam size up to 100 mm can be calculated using a common laptop computer. The work provides an e?cient numerical technique for high-intensity incident laser beams focused by lens that takes Kerr e?ect into consideration, which has potential applications in high energy density physics and large laser facilities for inertial con?nement fusion.

  • Magnetic field sensor based on magnetoplasmonic crystal

    摘要: Here we report on designing a magnetic field sensor based on magnetoplasmonic crystal made of noble and ferromagnetic metals deposited on one-dimensional subwavelength grating. The experimental data demonstrate resonant transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) at a narrow spectral region of 50 nm corresponding to the surface plasmon-polaritons excitation and maximum modulation of the reflected light intensity of 4.5% in a modulating magnetic field with the magnitude of 16 Oe. Dependences of TMOKE on external alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) magnetic field demonstrate that it is a possibility to use the magnetoplasmonic crystal as a high-sensitive sensing probe. The achieved sensitivity to DC magnetic field is up to 10?6 Oe at local area of 1 mm2.

  • Compact and low-power all-optical surface plasmon switches with isolated pump and data waveguides and a rectangular cavity containing nano-silver strips

    摘要: In this paper, a plasmonic all-optical switch based on a novel topology is presented. The structure is composed of a rectangular cavity coupled with two cross waveguides. Several silver strips with a tapered pattern are inserted in the rectangular cavity to create a sharp edge in the transmission spectrum of the data signal. The cavity and waveguides are filled with a non-linear insulator with high Kerr-type nonlinearity. The vertical and horizontal waveguides are used for passing the data and pump signals, respectively. When in addition to the data signal, the pump signal is also applied, the refractive index of the Kerr material changes, which triggers the switching mechanism. Allocating two different paths for the data and pump signals results in a desirable isolation between these signals. The proposed switch is numerically simulated using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. In order to verify the FDTD simulation results, the basic switch structure is also analyzed using the transmission line method. Compact size (considering two different input ports), low pumping intensity, simplicity, symmetrical structure, suitable isolation and high contrast ratios are the marked characteristics of the proposed all-optical switch. As a result, such a structure has the potential to be used in complex integrated optical circuits.

  • Numerically Implemented Impact of a Femtosecond Laser Pulse on Glass in the Approximation of Nonlinear Maxwell Equations

    摘要: A finite-difference scheme is presented for the solution of the problem on the interaction of a femtosecond laser pulse with glass in the approximation of nonlinear Maxwell equations supplemented by equations of the hydrodynamic type for conduction electrons. The model takes into account all the basic physical processes involved in this interaction. An axially symmetric problem is considered. The construction of the scheme allows for the specifics of the problem, which ensures the efficiency of the developed method. The use of the scheme is illustrated by the results of modeling the interaction between glass and femtosecond laser pulses of an ordinary Gaussian shape with linear polarization and doughnut pulses with radial and azimuthal polarization. Significant differences in the dynamics of the interaction between glass and these three types of pulses are revealed.

  • Comparing the anomalous Hall effect and the magneto-optical Kerr effect through antiferromagnetic phase transitions in Mn <sub/>3</sub> Sn

    摘要: In the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn, we compare simultaneous measurements of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) through two magnetic phase transitions: the high-temperature paramagnetic/antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transition at the N(cid:2)eel temperature (TN (cid:2) 420 K) and a lower-temperature incommensurate magnetic ordering at T1 (cid:2) 270 K. While both the AHE and MOKE are sensitive to the same underlying symmetries of the AF non-collinear spin order, we ?nd that the transition temperatures measured by these two techniques unexpectedly differ by approximately 10 K. Moreover, the applied magnetic ?eld at which the AF order reverses is signi?cantly larger when measured by MOKE than when measured by AHE. These results point to a difference between the bulk and surface magnetic properties of Mn3Sn.
