• Improvement of classification accuracy of stainless steel alloys by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy based on elemental intensity ratio analysis

摘要: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a useful technique for accurate sorting of metal scraps by chemical composition analysis. In this work, a method for intensity-ratio-based LIBS classification of stainless steel applicable to highly fluctuating LIBS signal conditions is proposed. The spectral line pairs for intensity ratio calculation were selected on the consideration of elemental concentration and upper levels of emission lines. It is demonstrated that the classification accuracy can be significantly improved from that of full spectra principal component analysis or intensity-based analysis. The proposed method is considered to be suited for an industrial scrap sorting system that requires minimal maintenance and low system price.

  • EXPRESS: Signal Enhancement Evaluation of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy of Extracted Animal Fats Using a Principal Component Analysis Approach

摘要: In this work, principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized to analyze laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) signals of extracted chicken fat, lamb fat, beef fat, and lard froze using two different freezing methods. The frozen samples were ablated using a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm, 170 mJ pulse energy, and 6 ns pulse duration to produce plasma on target surfaces. The samples were ablated using 30–60 shots of the laser beam at different spots. Stronger LIBS signals from extracted chicken fat and lamb fat were obtained with liquid nitrogen (LN2) method. However, LIBS signals obtained from the freezer freezing method were found to be stronger for extracted beef fat and lard. The PCA was then used to visualize the LIBS spectra of extracted animal fats into a score plot. Data points of each extracted animal fat were divided into three groups representing LIBS spectra collected at the early, middle and end part of the ablation process. The score plot revealed that the data points of the three groups of frozen extracted animal fats using the LN2 method were more closely clustered than those frozen in the freezer. Good discrimination with 97% of the variance was achieved between extracted the chicken fat, lamb fat, beef fat ,and lard using the LN2 method in the 3D score plot. LIBS signals of extracted animal fats produced from the LN2 method were found to be more stable than those from the freezer method.

  • Ultrafast Elemental Mapping of Platinum Group Elements and Mineral Identification in Platinum-Palladium Ore Using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

摘要: This paper demonstrates the capability of performing an ultrafast chemical mapping of drill cores collected from a platinum/palladium mine using laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A scan of 40 mm × 30 mm was performed, using a commercial LIBS analyzer, onto the flat surface of a drill core with a scanning speed of 1000 Hz, and a spatial resolution of 50 μm, in about 8 min. Maps of the scanned areas for seven chemical elements (platinum, palladium, nickel, copper, iron, silicon, and magnesium), as well as a single map including the seven elements altogether, were then generated using the proprietary software integrated into the LIBS analyzer. Based on the latter image, seven minerals were identified using the principal component analysis (PCA) and correlations with the elemental maps.

  • Characterization of the Chinese Traditional Medicine Artemisia annua by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) with 532?nm and 1064?nm Excitation

摘要: In order to investigate the influence of laser wavelength on the detection of the metals in Artemisia annua, pulsed lasers operating at wavelengths of 1064 nm and 532 nm for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) have been employed to generate the plasma. The spectral lines of Mg (II) at 279.54 nm, CN at 388.29 nm, Ca (II) at 393.37 nm and Fe (II) at 404.27 nm were used to evaluate the optical emission at various delay times for the 532 nm and the 1064 nm laser. The effects of the data acquisition delay time on the line intensity, signal-to-background ratio and the characteristic parameters of laser plasma have been investigated as well. The results show that the 1064 nm beam induced plasmas with higher signal-to-background ratios and temperatures than the 532 nm beam. However, the 532 nm laser beam produced plasma with higher electron densities than the 1064 nm laser beam. In addition, a significant influence has been found: the spectral intensities of the ions were stronger than the spectral intensities of the atoms independent of whether the laser was operated at 532 nm or 1064 nm.

  • Simultaneous measurements of fuel concentration and temperature in gas jets by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

摘要: Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) enables quantitative measurements of the equivalence ratio in flames, spray and gas jets. Although there are always considerable temperature differences between the calibrations and the LIBS measurements in flames and fuel jets, the temperature effects on LIBS were rarely mentioned and not corrected in the previous LIBS measurements. In this study, a novel method to simultaneously measure the equivalence ratio and the gas temperature by LIBS in a single laser shot is proposed. This method can correct the temperature effects based on the linear correlation between the peak intensity ratio (PIR) of atomic lines and the gas temperature. The PIR of H656/N746 and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of H656 are employed to establish calibration curves with the equivalence ratio and the gas temperature, respectively, and both of calibrations show high coefficients of determination (R2). Then, the measurement accuracy and precision of the proposed method are discussed in detail. The total uncertainties in measurements of equivalence ratio and gas temperature are estimated by 5.6% and 5.8%, respectively. Finally, the simultaneous measurements of equivalence ratios and gas temperatures in methane jets at different positions and at different injection pressures are conducted. The comparison of equivalence ratios before and after correction of the temperature effects indicates that the accuracy of the fuel concentration measurements by LIBS would be remarkably degraded if the temperature variations were neglected.

  • Investigation of compositional variations in chromitite ore with imaging Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and Spectral Angle Mapper classification algorithm

摘要: This paper focusses on the applicability of the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) algorithm for supervised classification of imaging Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) data. Our main objective is to investigate variations in the chemical/mineralogical composition of complex ore from the sub-millimetre to the metre scale, which may offer novel and barely investigated interpretation opportunities for exploration purposes. This research is based on coarse chromitite ore from Merensky Reef, represented by a drill core and a small section through the upper chromitite layer. Detailed LIBS-based imaging measurements were accompanied by space-resolved reference measurements based on SEM/MLA and EDXRF, as well as bulk chemical analyses for multiple core slices. The SAM algorithm was applied for classification of LIBS hyperspectral images with respect to differences in mineral chemistry. Our investigations focused on the pre-processing of LIBS spectra prior to SAM classification, on spectral library development, as well as on the validation of the classified data. The SAM classification algorithm, which is solely based on ratios between spectral intensities, was found insensitive to normal shot-to-shot plasma variations and to chemically induced matrix effects. However, the algorithm may become inaccurate at low signal to noise ratios, at the border between different mineral grains (mixed spectra), or when classifying chemically similar phases such as pyrite and pyrrhotite. The extent of mixed spectra depends both on the size of the mineral grains as well as on the spot size of the LIBS laser. The SAM algorithm was successfully applied for classification of several base metal sulphides, rock-forming minerals, accessory minerals, as well as several mixed phases representing the main borders between different mineral grains. The resulting classified LIBS image shows the spatial distribution of the different phases, which is in very good agreement with the space-resolved reference measurements based on EDXRF and SEM/MLA. The results also highlight the extremely heterogeneous distribution of e.g. the sulphide phases in the investigated core piece. The applicability of the LIBS-SAM classification image for estimating metal concentrations based on point counting has been explored for Cu, Ni, S, and Cr. We conclude that this approach, when applied on sufficiently large surfaces, enables semi-quantitative data analysis, as well as the possible detection of trace elements (e.g. Pt, Pd) that occur in very small nuggets.

  • Determination of copper-based mineral species by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and chemometric methods

摘要: The direct identification of mineral species in raw rocks was performed using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A total of 162 sulfide rocks with mineralogical relevance in the copper industry were analyzed. These contained bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcocite (Cu2S), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), covellite (CuS), enargite (Cu3AsS4), molybdenite (MoS2), and pyrite (FeS2). The samples were collected from different mining locations to account for sample variability. Unsupervised multivariate methods like principal component analysis (PCA) and dendrogram analysis were explored, while supervised pattern recognition techniques, such as soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), decision tree analysis and artificial neural networks (ANNs) were compared. The sensitivity test performed on the LIBS data shows that the models KNN, SIMCA, PLS-DA and ANN achieve an average classification accuracy of 96.2, 98.1, 90.6 and 100%, respectively. In contrast, the robustness test of the models SIMCA and PLS-DA yields accuracies of 97.7 and 98.8%, respectively. The correct identification of very similar species in terms of their elemental composition such as bornite/chalcopyrite and chalcocite/covellite is also achieved.

  • Classification of Ceramic Tableware by Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and Chemometrics

摘要: Ceramics manufactured in Brazil and in other countries were analyzed by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The LIBS spectra were employed to identify the origin of the tableware as produced in Brazil or abroad using soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Three sets of spectral variables were evaluated aiming at discrimination of the ceramics: the entire LIBS spectrum, a set of selected spectral ranges, and the maximum of emission intensity of the elements Al, Ca, Mg, Si, Na and Ti. The results for the three sets of variables show good performance, achieving correct classification from 88.6 to 94.3%, and 86.7 to 100% for the external training and test, respectively.

  • Feasibility study of gross calorific value, carbon content, volatile matter content and ash content of solid biomass fuel using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

摘要: Rapid determination of the solid biomass fuel properties is essential for optimizing the combustion process of biomass. In this work, a feasibility study on using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in conjunction with partial least squares (PLS) for simultaneous measurement of gross calori?c value, carbon content, volatile matter content and ash content was carried out for 66 wood pellet samples. The best quantitative analysis results were obtained with the PLS model based on spectra that combined baseline correction with Z-score standardization. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of the gross calori?c value, carbon content, volatile matter content and ash content were 0.33 MJ/kg, 0.65%, 1.11% and 0.38% respectively, while the average standard deviation (ASD) were 0.08 MJ/kg, 0.15%, 0.43% and 0.16% respectively.

  • Laser based analysis of transition metal boride thin films using liquid standards

摘要: In this work the use of two laser assisted direct solid sampling methods, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the determination of the stoichiometry of novel diboride based materials is reported. To overcome the need for certified reference materials or matrix matched standards, which were usually required for quantitative investigations with LA-ICP-MS or LIBS, in this work liquid standards are employed. For LA-ICP-MS the concept of self-aliquoting micro-grooves and for LIBS conventional dried droplets were used. As a model for application of the developed analytical procedures the ternary system W1-xTaxB2-z was used. Fabrication of W1-xTaxB2-z thin films with varying stoichiometry was performed via magnetron sputtering. Reference compositions were obtained by liquid digestion of the samples and subsequent ICP-OES measurement. Both laser-assisted methods enabled fast and spatially resolved measurements, although the LA-ICP-MS method generally yielded more accurate results. It was shown that the method can easily be adapted for the stoichiometry determination of systems with different elemental composition.
