  • Novel combined instrumentation for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy for the <i>in situ</i> atomic and molecular analysis of minerals

    摘要: An instrument combining laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman spectroscopy was developed for the in situ atomic and molecular composition analysis of minerals. The apparatus consists of an optical system, a sample chamber, a spectrometer for Raman and another for LIBS, as well as a control system equipped with laboratory-written software. Gypsum, calcite, prehnite, pearl, lazurite, and several mixtures of NaBr and CaCO3 were selected as samples for evaluation of the performance of the instrument. Sulfate, carbonate, silicate, and crystalline water were identified and different structures of CaCO3 were clearly distinguished by the use of a Gaussian fit. The limit of detection for CaCO3 in a NaBr mixture was 5.7 mg/g by Raman. LIBS was employed to determine calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, aluminum, and carbon with the newly developed system. The limits of detection obtained for Ca, Na, and C were 90.2 lg/g, 84.6 lg/g, and 2.5 mg/g, respectively. The experimental results from commercial Raman spectroscopy instruments were used to verify and support the measurements from this novel instrument.

  • Rapid quality assessment of isogams using laser plasma spectroscopy

    摘要: In this paper, the quality assessment of isogams is demonstrated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) using the comparative standardization method. Here, the mass concentrations of carbon and hydrogen, as basic elements of tar, relative to that of calcium, as an undesired element, are taken into account as principal parameters to determine the quality of isogams. Hence, the intensity ratios of H?? line of hydrogen (656.28?nm), the (0, 0) band of CN (388.34?nm), and the (0, 0) band of C2 (516.52?nm) to the line intensity of once-ionized calcium (317.93?nm) are considered as determinant markers for five different pre-known isogam brands. Qualitatively, classification of the isogams based on this approach is in full agreement with that obtained from the results of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In FTIR spectra, two stronger transitions of 2849?cm?1 and 2917?cm?1 related to the symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrations of C–H play the principal role in the analysis of samples. Furthermore, the results obtained from energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis quantitatively confirm the LIBS outcomes. And finally, to reveal the differences between isogams from various aspects, the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is exploited as a statistical approach.

  • Identification of Gravesa?? ophthalmology by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy combined with machine learning method

    摘要: Diagnosis of the Graves’ ophthalmology remains a significant challenge. We identified between Graves’ ophthalmology tissues and healthy controls by using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with machine learning method. In this work, the paraffin-embedded samples of the Graves’ ophthalmology were prepared for LIBS spectra acquisition. The metallic elements (Na, K, Al, Ca), non-metallic element (O) and molecular bands ((C-N), (C-O)) were selected for diagnosing Graves’ ophthalmology. The selected spectral lines were inputted into the supervised classification methods including linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (kNN), and generalized regression neural network (GRNN), respectively. The results showed that the predicted accuracy rates of LDA, SVM, kNN, GRNN were 76.33%, 96.28%, 96.56%, and 96.33%, respectively. The sensitivity of four models were 75.89%, 93.78%, 96.78%, and 96.67%, respectively. The specificity of four models were 76.78%, 98.78%, 96.33%, and 96.00%, respectively. This demonstrated that LIBS assisted with a nonlinear model can be used to identify Graves’ ophthalmopathy with a higher rate of accuracy. The kNN had the best performance by comparing the three nonlinear models. Therefore, LIBS combined with machine learning method can be an effective way to discriminate Graves’ ophthalmology.

  • Rapid qualitative evaluation of velvet antler using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)

    摘要: The aim of this work is to study a rapid analysis method to evaluate velvet antler products qualitatively, using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). We used principal component analysis to select feature lines of LIBS spectra of velvet antler, and built two partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) classification models to distinguish between inferior and good quality velvet antler by using the intensities of all lines and feature lines as input variables, respectively. The correct classification rates (CCRs) of these two models were both 100%. In order to test the robustness of the models, we used these two models to discriminate the samples not included in the training set to build the model, and the CCRs were 87.5% and 100%, respectively. The results demonstrated that combining LIBS with PLS-DA could evaluate the quality of velvet antler, and the robustness could be improved by using the intensities of feature lines as inputs.

  • Quantitative in situ mapping of elements in deep-sea hydrothermal vents using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and multivariate analysis

    摘要: This study describes a method to quantify the chemical composition of deep-sea hydrothermal deposits in situ using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis is applied to spectra obtained using a long laser pulse with a duration of 150 ns. The number of measurements needed to address the spatial heterogeneity of samples is determined through high-resolution mapping of the elemental distribution in rock samples. PLS applied to laboratory measured seawater-submerged samples achieved an average relative error (RE) of 25% for Cu, Pb, and Zn compared to benchmark concentration values in cross-validation and validation studies, where both the benchmark concentration values and LIBS spectral data are made available with this publication. The PLS model was applied to LIBS signals obtained in situ from hydrothermal deposits at 1000 m depth in the ocean. The results show that target inhomogeneity limits the accuracy of the surface LIBS measurements compared to benchmark values from bulk analysis of samples. Making multiple measurements with small position offsets at each location improves the accuracy of estimates compared to an equivalent number of measurements at a single position. Maps of element distribution generated using quantified in situ data demonstrate how chemical survey outputs can be generated by combining LIBS with multivariate analysis. This enables real-time chemical feedback during deep-sea operations and chemical surveys in situations or with platforms where sample recovery is not possible.

  • Geographical authenticity evaluation of Mentha haplocalyx by LIBS coupled with multivariate analyses

    摘要: Mentha haplocalyx (mint) is a significant traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) listed in the Catalogue of “Medicinal and Food Homology”, therefore, its geographical origins (GOs) are critical to the medicinal and food value. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an advanced analytical technique for GOs certification, due to the fast multi-elemental analysis requiring minimal sample pretreatment. In this study, LIBS data of sampled mint from five GOs were investigated by LIBS coupled with multivariate statistical analyses. The spectral data was analyzed by two chemometric algorithms, i.e. principal component analysis (PCA) and least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM). Specifically, the performance of LS-SVM with linear kernel and radial basis function (RBF) kernel was explored in sensitivity and robustness tests. Both LS-SVM algorithms exhibited excellent performance of classification in sensitive test and good performance (a little inferior) in robustness test. Generally, LS-SVM with linear kernel equally outperformed LS-SVM based on RBF kernel. The result indicated the potential for future applications in herbs and food, especially for in situ GOs applications of TCM authenticity rapidly.

  • Determination of Lead and Chromium in Aloe Vera Pulp and Aloe Vera-Based Cosmetics by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)

    摘要: This study focuses on the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to determine lead and chromium in pristine aloe vera and aloe vera based beauty soaps using the second harmonic (532 nm) of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The optimal experimental conditions were evaluated to improve the sensitivity of the detection system by a parametric dependence study. The atomic transition lines at 405.7 nm and 425.4 nm were used as the analytical lines to determine lead and chromium, respectively. The LIBS system was calibrated for these toxic elements and the samples under analysis included 8.00–15.00 ppm by mass of lead and 5.00–12.00 ppm by mass of chromium, which are far above the safe permissible levels of these elements (i.e., 0.50 ppm for Pb and 1.00 ppm for Cr). The quantitative results were checked before and after normalization with the background and better outcomes were obtained when the spectrum was normalized with the background. The LIBS results were compared to the outcomes of selected samples by a standard analytical method, inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Both outcomes were in outstanding conformity implying the reliability of the LIBS measurements. The current study is attractive for the general evaluation of human health and specifically for the analysis of aloe vera based cosmetics.

  • A singularity free and derivative free approach for Abel integral equation in analyzing the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

    摘要: In order to make a detailed analysis of the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), we present a new approach which has advantages of singularity free and derivative free for solving the Abel integral equation. After presenting the model describing the LIBS, a collocation method is applied and two main steps are introduced. First, the Abel integral equation is transformed to a singularity free and derivative free integral equation. Then, by expanding the solution of the integral equation to a polynomial of degree n, the solution can be approximated by a linear system established by the collocation method. Our approach is suitable for dealing with LIBS problem for any form of the measured intensity. In particular, the method is insensitive to the noisy intensity data. A convergence analysis is also given to show the validity of the method and numerical examples are provided to show its efficiency and accuracy.

  • Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy as a tool for homogeneity measurements in medicine tablets

    摘要: In this work, we have used laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in the analysis of commercial tablets. The samples were mainly composed of dipyrone, an analgesic and fever reliever consumed worldwide. At first, the physical parameters, temperature and electronic density of the plasma were calculated throughout the Boltzmann plot and Saha equation respectively, and the McWhirter criterion was achieved, which allows us to assert that the minimum criterion for local thermodynamic equilibrium is presented in the plasma generated. After that, the tablets’ homogeneity was assessed using the whole LIBS spectra combined to correlation statistic methods, such as principal components analysis (PCA) and hyperspectral images. The results show high homogeneity, R > 0.996, at the surface and some heterogeneity in the bulk. LIBS was also applied for major active pharmaceutical ingredients C, Na and Mg identification.

  • Improved measurement on quantitative analysis of coal properties using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

    摘要: It is of great significance to realize the rapid or online analysis of coal properties for combustion optimization of thermal power plants. In this work, a set of calibration schemes based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was determined to improve the measurement on quantitative analysis of coal properties, including proximate analysis (calorific value, ash, volatile content) and ultimate analysis (carbon and hydrogen). Firstly, different normalization methods (channel normalization and normalization with the whole spectral area) combined with two regression algorithms (partial least-squares regression [PLSR] and support vector regression [SVR]) were compared to initially select the appropriate calibration method for each indicator. Then, the influence of de-noising by the wavelet threshold de-noising (WTD) on quantitative analysis was further studied, thereby the final analysis schemes for each indicator were determined. The results showed that WTD coupled SVR can be well estimated calorific value and ash, the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) were 0.80 MJ kg?1 and 0.60%. Coupling WTD and PLSR performed best for the measurement of volatile content, the RMSEP was 0.76%. For the quantitative analysis of carbon and hydrogen, normalization with the whole spectral area combined with SVR can get better measurement results, the RMSEP of the measurements were 1.08% and 0.21%, respectively. The corresponding average standard deviation (RSD) for calorific value, ash, volatile content, carbon and hydrogen of validation sets were 0.26 MJ kg?1, 0.57%, 0.79%, 0.47% and 0.08%, respectively. The results demonstrated that the selection of appropriate spectral pre-processing coupled with calibration strategies for each indicator can effectively improve the accuracy and precision of the measurement on coal properties.
