    摘要: In this paper, we investigate the use of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) (i.e., smart mirrors) to relax the line-of-sight requirement of free space optical (FSO) systems. We characterize the impact of the physical parameters of the IRS, such as its size, position, and orientation, on the quality of the end-to-end FSO channel. In addition, we develop a statistical channel model for the geometric and the misalignment losses which accounts for the random movements of the IRS, transmitter, and receiver due to building sway. This model can be used for performance analysis of IRS-based FSO systems. Our analytical results shows that depending on the angle between the beam direction and the IRS plane, building sway for the IRS has either a smaller or larger impact on the quality of the end-to-end FSO channel than building sway for the transmitter and receiver. Furthermore, our simulation results validate the accuracy of the developed channel model and offer insight for system design.

  • Reducing orbital angular momentum crosstalk of the Bessel Gaussian beam for underwater optical communications

    摘要: We derive the analytical expressions of the probabilities for the signal and the crosstalk orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of a high order Bessel Gaussian beam used in underwater optical communications. Our numerical results show that the probabilities of the signal and crosstalk OAM states are effected by the propagation distance and the parameters of the oceanic turbulence. The receiver aperture can be used to reduce the probabilities of the crosstalk OAM states and the probability of the detected signal OAM states keeps almost unchanged. Our results may improve the quality of the optical communications system.

  • Blind Joint Polarization Demultiplexing and IQ Imbalance Compensation for M-QAM Coherent Optical Communications

    摘要: A novel joint polarization demultiplexing and IQ imbalance compensation scheme for coherent optical communications that uses global update is proposed and analyzed through numerical simulations. We describe the system model and derive its related equations. Next, we formulate our blind M -QAM arbitrary approach based on EASI algorithm and using the second order statistics of the observed signals. A comparison of the proposed joint method with the traditional CMA for polarization demultiplexing followed by BASS for IQ imbalance compensation is also reported. Evaluated metrics (EVM, MSE, BER) demonstrate its effectiveness compared with CMA cascaded with BASS algorithm.

  • A simple strategy to design broadband low power consumption distributed Raman amplifier

    摘要: In this work, a simple strategy to design wideband low power consumption Raman amplifiers is demonstrated for a three-pump configuration using a low water peak optical fiber. The approach is based on the introduction of a novel numerical measure, which quantifies and isolates pump-pump interaction contribution to gain profile and analyzes its correlation to amplifier minimum ripple. The method tailors the amplifier gain spectrum over 80nm bandwidth with a ripple smaller than 1dB, a gain on the order of 4dB for up to 75km fiber length, and a total pump power consumption smaller than 300mW.

  • Any point bias control technique for MZ modulator

    摘要: A novel any point bias control scheme for the Mach–Zehnder modulator is proposed. The average output optical power and its deviations are used as feedback signal. Its effectiveness is demonstrated with simulations and experiments. This technique has been shown to be independent of input optical power to the modulator. The experimental results show that this is an effective bias control technique suitable for a variety of modulation formats. The system BER performance has been observed without degradation.

  • Special Issue on Optical Communications and Networking: Prospects in Industrial Applications

    摘要: In the past two decades, Internet traffic has increased by over 10,000 times by taking advantage of both efficient information processing technology in the electronic domain and efficient transmission technology in the optical domain, which are the foundation of today’s Internet infrastructure [1,2]. The advancement of electronics processing circuits has followed Moore’s law, and perhaps will continue this exponential growth for years to come. This may make the electrical systems significantly outpace the advancement of optical systems in information and communications technologies. To support the ever-growing Internet traffic, optical communication systems face a great challenge in transporting information processed by electronic systems for sustained exponential growth. The industry has explored multiple degrees of freedom of the photon (time, wavelength, amplitude, phase, polarization, and space) to significantly reduce the cost/bit for data transmission by increasing the capacity/fiber through multiplexing and reducing the size and power through integration.

  • Regular perturbation on the group-velocity dispersion parameter for nonlinear fibre-optical communications

    摘要: Communication using the optical fibre channel can be challenging due to nonlinear effects that arise in the optical propagation. These effects represent physical processes that originate from light propagation in optical fibres. To obtain fundamental understandings of these processes, mathematical models are typically used. These models are based on approximations of the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation, the differential equation that governs the propagation in an optical fibre. All available models in the literature are restricted to certain regimes of operation. Here, we present an approximate model for the nonlinear optical fibre channel in the weak-dispersion regime, in a noiseless scenario. The approximation is obtained by applying regular perturbation theory on the group-velocity dispersion parameter of the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation. The proposed model is compared with three other models using the normalized square deviation metric and shown to be significantly more accurate for links with high nonlinearities and weak dispersion.

  • High-speed III-V based avalanche photodiodes for optical communicationsa??the forefront and expanding applications

    摘要: Avalanche photodiodes (APDs), i.e., semiconductor devices, which convert and amplify optical signals into electrical signals, are used for optical communications and for imaging and medical applications. The major requirements for APDs in optical communications are high-speed operation for high data rates and high-sensitivity operation for extending the transmission reach. This paper overviews the achievements of high-speed APDs for 100-Gbit/s optical communications, focusing on III-V material systems, which are advantageous in terms of band engineering. The outlook for APDs in future optical communications is also described.

    摘要: We design and fabricate a chip-scale optical phased array (OPA) with a uniform emitting structure composed of bent waveguides. This silicon-on-insulator based device demonstrates aliasing-free beam-steering over the entire field-of-view available (-34°~34°), with a far-field addressability of 6.71°. In addition, the steering process exhibits a plateau envelope, with an intensity fluctuation of less than 0.45 dB from -30°~30°.

  • Impact of Chirp in High-Capacity Optical Metro Networks Employing Directly-Modulated VCSELs

    摘要: Directly modulated long-wavelength vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are considered for the implementation of sliceable bandwidth/bitrate variable transceivers for very high capacity transmission (higher than 50 Gb/s per wavelength) in metropolitan area systems characterized by reduced cost, power consumption, and footprint. The impact of the frequency chirp measured for InP VCSELs with different kinds of design (high-bandwidth very short cavity and widely-tunable with micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) top mirror) is analyzed in case of discrete multitone (DMT) direct modulation in combination with 25-GHz wavelength selective switch (WSS) filtering. The maximum transmitted capacity for both dual side- and single side-band DMT modulation is evaluated as a function of the number of crossed nodes in a mesh metro network, comparing VCSEL based transmitters performance also with the case of external electro-absorption modulator use. Finally, the maximum reach achieved based on the received optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and the fiber span length is discussed. The results confirm the possibility to use directly-modulated long-wavelength VCSELs for the realization of sliceable bandwidth/bitrate variable transmitters targeting 50-Gb/s capacity per polarization, also in the presence of 5 crossed WSSs for reaches of hundreds of kilometers in multi-span Erbium-doped fiber amplified (EDFA) metro links supported by coherent detection.
