  • Velocity-dependent wear behavior of phosphate laser glass

    摘要: Using a reciprocating sliding tribometer, the velocity-dependent wear behaviors of phosphate laser (PL) glass were investigated in dry and humid air. The experimental results show that the velocity dependence of wear in PL glass is very sensitive to the presence of water. In dry air, the velocity-dependent wear of PL glass shows fracture-dominated damage behavior. With increasing velocity, the Hertzian cracks increase ?rst and then tend to saturation. Simultaneously, the material-removal volume also increases ?rst and then keeps almost unchanged. However in humid air, the wear mechanism transforms into tribochemistry-controlled wear process, and almost no crack forms on glass surface for various velocities. With increasing velocity, the stress-enhanced hydrolysis becomes weaker and material-removal volume of PL glass decreases sharply. These results may help understand the surface damage and material removal of phosphate laser glass during machining and serving in various conditions.

  • Intriguing energy transfer mechanism in oxide and oxy-fluoride phosphate glasses

    摘要: Phosphate glasses with chemical compositions (mol %) of (66-x) P2O5-17Li2O-17Gd2O3-xEu2O3 and (66-x) P2O5-17Li2O-17GdF3-xEu2O3 (where x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0) were prepared with conventional melt quenching technique. The physical and luminescence properties of prepared glass samples were investigated systematically. The density and refractive index increase with increasing concentration of Eu2O3. The characteristic intense red emission at 612 nm corresponding to the transition (5D0 →7F2) of Eu3+ ions has been observed for both oxide and oxy-fluoride glass samples. The Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory is used to evaluate the properties such as oscillator strengths, J-O intensity parameters, radiative transition probabilities, stimulated emission cross section and branching ratios for present glasses. The J-O intensity parameters follow ?4 > ?2 > ?6 trend. The oxyfluoride glasses show longer decay time as compared to oxide glasses. Hence from the properties it is concluded that, the present glass samples can be a good candidate for red light emitting source in solid state lighting applications.

  • Spectroscopic Properties of Er3+-Doped Particles-Containing Phosphate Glasses Fabricated Using the Direct Doping Method

    摘要: The effect of the incorporation of Er2O3-doped particles on the structural and luminescence properties of phosphate glasses was investigated. A series of different Er2O3-doped TiO2, ZnO, and ZrO2 microparticles was synthesized using soft chemistry and then added into various phosphate glasses after the melting at a lower temperature than the melting temperature. The compositional, morphological, and structural analyses of the particles-containing glasses were performed using elemental mapping by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Additionally, the luminescence spectra and the lifetime values were measured to study the influence of the particles incorporation on the spectroscopic properties of the glasses. From the spectroscopic properties of the glasses with the composition 50P2O5-40SrO-10Na2O, a large amount of the Er2O3-doped particles is thought to dissolve during the glass melting. Conversely, the particles were found to survive in glasses with a composition 90NaPO3-(10 ? x)Na2O-xNaF (with x = 0 and 10 mol %) due to their lower processing temperature, thus clearly showing that the direct doping method is a promising technique for the development of new active glasses.

  • Note: Complementary approach for radiation dosimetry with Ag <sup>+</sup> -activated phosphate glass

    摘要: Silver ion-activated phosphate glass (Ag+-glass) has a good potential for application to radiation dosimetry in various radiation fields due to its multifunctional properties as a detector. The Ag+-glass provides three independent signals of radiophotoluminescence, optical absorption, and nuclear track. The combination of these signals allows the dynamic range of the measured dose (10 μGy–10 kGy) and linear energy transfer (<10 keV/μm and >1 MeV/μm) to be widened.

  • Bismuth-Doped Phosphate Glasses and H+-Implanted Waveguides

    摘要: The work reports on the preparation and optical characterization of 75P2O5-15B2O3-9Al2O3-Bi2O3 glass by using the melt-quenching method and absorption spectroscopy, respectively. Further, 0.4-MeV proton implantation of a ?uence of 8.0 × 1016 ions/cm2 was carried out on this glassy sample and it was tested as a waveguide at a wavelength of 632.8 nm for the ?rst time to our knowledge. The m-line curves of the waveguide were measured before and after successive annealing treatments. The formation theory of the planar waveguides is discussed through simulations of the energy loss distribution and analysis of the reconstructed refractive index pro?le. The results should be useful in the design and fabrication of bismuth-doped phosphate glass and its use in integrated photonics devices.

    摘要: In the last decade high energy and high peak power pulsed laser sources have been in a great demand for a variety of applications such as remote sensing (LIDAR, DIAL), range findings, communications systems and material processing. Since the energy of the pulsed laser oscillator is generally much lower than the one required for the applications, a fibre amplifier is commonly used to boost the output power, realizing the so called MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) laser architecture. The realization of a fibre amplifier requires an active medium with high optical gain in short length, in order to mitigate nonlinear optical effects. Multicomponent phosphate glasses are recognized to be an ideal host material for the realization of these fibres, as they can be doped with large amounts of rare earth (RE) ions (up to 1021 ions/cm3) without clustering, thus allowing the fabrication of extremely compact active devices with high optical gain (> 5 dB/cm) in short length [1,2]. Moreover, phosphate glasses possess good thermo-mechanical properties, high emission cross-sections, high optical damage threshold and are less susceptible than silica to photodarkening [3,4]. With the aim of realizing short-length amplifiers in the 1 μm and 1.5 μm wavelength range, highly Yb3+ and Yb3+-Er3+-doped custom phosphate glass compositions were designed and fabricated by melt-quenching technique. Suitable cladding compositions were explored. The manufactured glasses were thoroughly investigated. First of all, they were thermo-mechanically characterized, then the glasses underwent optical characterization such as refractive index measurement, FTIR spectroscopy and, for active glass, RE emission spectroscopy resolved in time and frequency. Phosphate fibers and rods were then manufactured by preform drawing using a custom induction heated optical fiber drawing tower, with the preform being obtained by rod-in-tube technique. Preliminary results of optical amplification are presented for a single stage MOPA, both in the 1 μm and 1.5 μm wavelength range.

  • Nd3+-doped mixed-anion fluoro-sulfo-phosphate glass for 1.06?μm solid-state laser

    摘要: Fluoro-sulfo-phosphate poly-anionic glasses KPO3–AlF3–K2SO4 (KPFS) and Nd3+-doped samples (Nd–KPFS) were prepared by conventional melt-quenching method and their physical properties were comprehensively analyzed. Their actual glass compositions were carefully checked by di?erent methods. These glasses exhibit typically low linear refractive index nd (~ 1.482) and nonlinear refractive index n2 (~ 0.86 × 10?13 esu), high Abbe's number (~ 72.0) and moderate elasticity modulus E (~ 50.2 GPa). The spectroscopic properties of Nd–KPFS specimens are further evaluated by the Judd-Ofelt theory, and the results suggest that the stimulated radiative parameters can be enhanced by tuning sulfate contents. Besides, Nd–KPFS glasses present relatively long lifetime τexp (~ 428 μs) and large ?gure of merit FOM (~ 9.29 × 10?24 cm2 s). All of the results imply that such ?uoro-sulfo-phosphate glass would be a promising candidate for solid-state laser.

  • Yb3+/Tb3+/Ho3+: phosphate nanophase embedded glass ceramics: enhanced upconversion emission and temperature sensing behavior

    摘要: Yb3+/Tb3+/Ho3+ tri-doped transparent phosphate glass–ceramics (GCs) were successfully synthetized by a conventional melt-quenching technique with subsequent glass crystallization. The formation of phosphate nanocrystals (NCs) with leucite structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED). The variation of the decay curves confirms the accumulation of active centers into the NCs lattice. Hence, the UC emission intensity of Yb3+/Tb3+/Ho3+ doped GC610 sample is greatly enhanced relative to that in precursor glass (PG). And the UC energy transfers processes were systematically analysis. The result shows that the energy transfer of Ho3+→Tb3+ exists while Yb3+ as a sensitizer ion. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent UC luminescence and temperature sensing behaviors of the prepared materials based on the thermally coupled levels of Tb3+: 5D4 and Ho3+: 5F5 in the temperature range of 298–648 K were systematically investigated, to explore its possible application as optical thermometric medium, by utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. The relative sensitivity (Sr) of 7.5 × 10?3 K?1 and absolute sensitivity (Sa) of 22 × 10?3 K?1 are achieved in the Yb3+/Tb3+/Ho3+ tri-doped GC. This GC materials is a very promising candidate for optical temperature sensors.

  • Absorption and luminescence studies of Sm3+ ions activated in distinct phosphate glasses for reddish orange light applications

    摘要: In the present work, we report the optical properties of Sm3+ ions doped glasses having chemical compositions (70-x) NH4H2PO4+15Na2O+15M2O + xSm2O3 (where x = 0.5 mol% and M = Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba). Structural details are obtained from XRD, SEM, FTIR, Raman and solid-state 31P NMR spectra. Absorption (UV-NIR), emission and lifetime measurements have been performed and discussed using Judd-Ofelt theory. Various radiative parameters are calculated and discussed. Visible emissions from 4G5/2 excited state have been characterized and the experimental lifetimes of these levels have been compared with those obtained theoretically by using J-O approach. Quantum e?ciencies are reported. The CIE chromaticity co-ordinates of the present glass matrices con?rmed reddish-orange light emission. Hence the prepared samples can be treated as candidates for reddish orange light applications.

  • Evaluation of the shielding parameters of alkaline earth based phosphate glasses using MCNPX code

    摘要: Glass systems of composition 16XO–3Al2O3–6CuO–20Na2O–55P2O5 (where X=Sr, Ca, Mg and Ba mol%) have been investigated to check its potential utilize as gamma ray shielding material. Different shielding quantities namely mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ), effective atomic number (Zeff), half value layer (HVL) and mean free path (MFP) have been evaluated using MCNPX code and XCOM program at different photon energies between 0.015-10 MeV. The obtained data revealed good agreement between the μ/ρ values derived from XCOM and MCNPX code (version 2.6.0). It is found that the mass attenuation coefficients of BaO-doped phosphate glass are higher than those of the other alkaline earth elements–doped glasses, whereas MgO possess the lowest values. This indicates that the BaO-doped phosphate glass is the superior gamma radiation attenuator among the studied glass samples. The gamma shielding performance of the glasses under study has been compared to some commercial glasses and different concrete samples in terms of MFP.
