  • Endowing Light-Inert Aqueous Surfactant Two-Phase System with Photo Responsiveness by Introducing a Trojan Horse

    摘要: The ability to modulate the phase behavior of aqueous surfactant two-phase (ASTP) system reversibly with light is of great importance in both fundamental and applied science. Thus far, most of the light-responsive ASTP systems are based on covalent-modification of the component molecules. In this article, we for the first time achieve photo-responsiveness in a light-inert ASTP system by physically introducing a photo-trigger with the aid of an Trojan Horse. The ATPS system formed with sodium laurate (SL) and dodecyl tributyl amomium (DBAB) doesn’t show light responsiveness by physically mixing a light responsive azobenzene compound, 2-(4-(phenyldiazenyl)phenoxy)actate sodium (Azo). However, in the presence of the host-guest complex SL@β-CD formed with β-CD and sodium laurate (SL), the ASTP turns quickly into a homogenous suspension under visible light, which recovers to the original ASTP state again under 365 nm UV irradiation. Because the SL@β-CD complex exists harmonically with the ASTP, it can be viewed as a “Trojan horse” that becomes fatal only when the encapsulated SL is triggered to release. In the presence of the Trojan horse, the photo-responsiveness of the ASTP can be manipulated reversibly by alternatively exerting UV and visible light. Using this strategy, we are able to collect trace amount of oily components from water. The current strategy points out that it is possible to achieve light-responsiveness in light-inert systems with physical method, which may have profound impact both on the fundamental and applied science.

  • NIR-Responsive Copolymer Upconversion Nanocomposites for Triggered Drug Release in Vitro and in Vivo

    摘要: Light has several advantages as the stimulus for triggered drug release. Currently, the applications of phototriggered drug-release devices (PDDs) are largely limited by two factors: the limited tissue penetration and detrimental effects caused by excitation light (ultraviolet or visible light). To address this disadvantage, this study developed nanocomposites based on upconversion nanoparticles (UC), which could convert near-infrared light to ultraviolet-visible light and trigger drug release. By loading UC and doxorubicin (DOX) into photo-responsive copolymer PEG-NMAB-PLA (PNP), near-infrared responsive copolymer upconversion nanocomposites (PNP-DOX-UC) was constructed. We proved that PNP-DOX-UC showed the fast release and strong cytotoxicity under near infrared irradiation in vitro. The therapeutic efficacy study indicated that PNP-DOX-UC+hv had the enhanced antitumor efficiency. In the study, UC becoming an internal ultraviolet-visible light source for near infrared excitation developes an applicable and efficient approach to meet the requirements for UV/Vis excitation, which is a major disadvantage in photosensitive materials developed for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

  • Light-Responsive Nanocapsule-Coated Polymer Films for Antimicrobial Active Packaging

    摘要: The development of antimicrobial active packaging constitutes a powerful tool to reduce waste and increase quality standards of perishable goods. Among numerous available antimicrobial agents, essential oils stand out for their renowned efficiency, and their use is beneficial due to their sustainability compared to other oil-based antimicrobials. In this work, we report on the use of photo-responsive nanocapsules containing thyme essential oil as functional coatings for polyethylene and polylactic acid films to obtain antimicrobial active packaging. Polymer surface activation treatment enhanced compatibility with nanocapsules solution. The films were analyzed to assess the structural and functional properties of the coating, evaluate morphological changes due to their photo-responsive behavior, and monitor the light-induced release of volatile thyme oil. It was found that 24 h after a 15-min UV exposure of the coated films, the concentration of thyme oil in the headspace was eight times higher with respect to un-irradiated films, thus confirming the efficiency of the light-triggered release system. Therefore, the manufactured films are proposed as on-demand release devices for application in non-contact antimicrobial active packaging.

    摘要: Photo-responsive surfaces, especially for the photo-responsive superwetting surface, have aroused great interests in smart control devices for a few years due to their remote control and selectivity. This chapter focuses on the photo-responsive wettability on the superwetting surface and their typical applications, particularly on switchable wettability on photo-responsive surfaces and their applications such as droplet actuation, adhesion control, liquid printing and oil-water separation. Finally, our personal point of the prospects and challenges of the photo-responsive wettability surfaces are presented.

Herein, we report a new generation of materials with unique shape and structures, cylindrical soft matter particles (tubisomes), obtained from the hierarchical self-assembly of cyclic peptide-bridged amphiphilic diblock copolymers. Additionally, the capacity of obtained photo-responsive tubisomes as potential drug carriers is evaluated. The supramolecular tubisomes described here paves an alternative way for fabricating polymeric tubular structures, and will expand the toolbox for the rational design of functional hierarchical nanostructures.

  • Enhanced photocontrolled binding of Ag+ by thioindigo derivative containing oxyethylene chains with OH groups at the terminal positions

    摘要: A novel thioindigo dye was synthesized, from 7, 7’-bis-chlorocarbonyl thioindigo, containing OH groups at the terminal positions of the oxyethylene side chains. The resultant dye 7, 7’-Bis[[2-[2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethoxycarbonyl]thioindigo (1) was characterized by 1H NMR, IR, and mass spectral studies. The thioindigo derivative (1), which possesses a molecular architecture, undergoes reversible photochromic reaction and capable of capturing different metal ions and transports them through liquid membrane. Enhancement of binding ability (i) by incorporating OH groups instead of large phenyl or methyl groups, (ii) by trans to cis photoisomerization of (1), iii) the highest amount of transported Ag+ by (1) across a liquid membrane when irradiated with 550 and 480 nm light alternately, were found.

  • Optically-controlled supramolecular self-assembly of an antibiotic for antibacterial regulation

    摘要: We report a supramolecular photo-responsive antibiotic (azobenzene-norfloxacin/aCD). This supramolecule exhibited a higher ‘‘on–off’’ ratio of antibacterial ability than azobenzene-norfloxacin alone under UV irradiation. It offers an approach to efficiently regulate the activity of antibiotics by combining the supramolecular and light-regulating strategies together.

  • An AIEgen-based luminescent photo-responsive system used as concealed anti-counterfeit material

    摘要: Photo-responsive materials with good luminescence performance in solid state have received widespread attention. However, the reported luminescent photo-responsive systems exhibit either only color change or both color and luminescence changes in solid state upon UV light irradiation. Developing photo-responsive materials with only tunable luminescence signals in solid state remains a great challenge for constructing concealed anti-counterfeit materials. In this work, a novel luminescent photo-responsive molecule (TPE-TS) was developed, which exhibited intense ?uorescence emission due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic from its tetraphenylethene moiety. After irradiated by UV light, an isomerization from thio-keto form to thio-enol form took place in the thiosemicarbazide group, accompanied with obvious ?uorescence quenching. Interestingly, there was no visible color variation before and after UV light irradiation owing to the small conjugated structure of TPE-TS. Taking this unique photo-responsive property, a concealed anti-counterfeit paper was successfully prepared. Letters could be recorded by UV light on this paper, hided under daylight and only visible again by UV light, demonstrating an excellent concealed performance as an anti-counterfeit material.
