    摘要: Integrated photonics is a promising route toward high-performance next-generation ICT and sensing devices. Although fiber-packaging is perhaps the most widely discussed obstacle to low-cost photonic devices, electronic-photonic integration and thermal-stabilization are also significant design considerations that need to be properly managed. Using a state-of-the-art Si-photonic optical-network-unit as a worked example, we illustrate some key challenges and solutions in the field of photonic-packaging. Specifically, we describe a novel solder-reflow bonding process for the face-to-face three-dimensional (3-D) integration of photonic and electronic integrated circuits, discuss current and future multichannel fiber-alignment techniques, and investigate the coefficient-of-performance of the thermo-electric cooler that stabilizes the temperature of the photonic components. The challenge of photonic-packaging is to simultaneously satisfy these electrical, optical, and thermal design requirements on small-footprint devices, while establishing a route to scalable commercial implementation.

  • 2D Waveguided Bessel Beam Generated Using Integrated Metasurface-Based Plasmonic Axicon

    摘要: Near-field imaging of the propagation of a diffraction-free Bessel-type beam in a guided wave configuration generated by means of a metasurface-based axicon lens integrated on a silicon waveguide is reported. The operation of the axicon lens with a footprint as small as 11μm2 is based on local engineering of the effective index of the silicon waveguide with plasmonic nanoresonators. This generic approach, which can be adapted to different types of planar lightwave circuit platforms, offers the possibility to design nano-engineered optical devices based on the use of plasmonic resonators to control light at the nanoscale.

  • Quantum Memristors in Frequency-Entangled Optical Fields

    摘要: A quantum memristor is a passive resistive circuit element with memory, engineered in a given quantum platform. It can be represented by a quantum system coupled to a dissipative environment, in which a system–bath coupling is mediated through a weak measurement scheme and classical feedback on the system. In quantum photonics, such a device can be designed from a beam splitter with tunable reflectivity, which is modified depending on the results of measurements in one of the outgoing beams. Here, we show that a similar implementation can be achieved with frequency-entangled optical fields and a frequency mixer that, working similarly to a beam splitter, produces state superpositions. We show that the characteristic hysteretic behavior of memristors can be reproduced when analyzing the response of the system with respect to the control, for different experimentally attainable states. Since memory effects in memristors can be exploited for classical and neuromorphic computation, the results presented in this work could be a building block for constructing quantum neural networks in quantum photonics, when scaling up.

  • Photo-chemically derived Plasmonic Semiconductor Nanocrystals as Optical Switch for Ultrafast Photonics

    摘要: Establishing new photonic material with large optical nonlinearity in the near-infrared regime is significant for ultrafast optical science and devices. In this paper, we developed a facile photochemical approach to fabricate covellite CuS plasmonic nanocrystals (NCs) with high chemical stability and strong oxidation resistance under ambient conditions. The photo-chemically derived CuS NCs possess strong absorption in the visible-to-near-infrared optical range caused by the localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR). We further demonstrate superior saturable absorption behavior of CuS NCs with large modulation depth and high damage threshold. By using CuS as an optical switch, a highly-stable mode-locked pulsed laser operating in the telecommunication band with signal-to-noise ratio over 70 dB and pulse duration of 1.57 ps has been achieved. Our results suggest that the photochemical method is an effective technique to fabricate plasmonic NCs, which can be developed as an excellent candidate for ultrafast photonic devices in the visible-to-near-infrared region.

  • Femtosecond laser modification of 6Ha??SiC crystals for waveguide devices

    摘要: We report on optical waveguides produced by a femtosecond laser in 6H–SiC crystals. Their guiding properties have been investigated at a wavelength of 1064 nm, and confocal micro-Raman images have been obtained at an excitation wavelength of 532 nm. The results demonstrate that mode pro?les can be tailored by the adjustment of writing parameters, and the blueshift of the spectrum (at around 787.05 cm?1) mainly takes place in the irradiated areas. From images of Raman intensity and spectral shift, it is obvious that optical properties in guiding regions are well preserved. These waveguides may have potential applications in integrated optics and quantum photonics.

    摘要: In this paper, we present a novel design of an adiabatic compact taper which can be used as a converter between a grating coupler and a single-mode optical fiber at 1550 nm wavelength. The proposed taper in this paper is coupling the light between a wide grating coupler with width 15μ and nanophotonic waveguide with width 500nm. Besides, the length of the proposed design is 22μm. Therefore, it is a compact design as it has a small footprint which leads to high efficiency and low costs in fabrication. The coupling efficiency is around 92%.

    摘要: Single sideband optical modulation can be used in multiple RF photonic link applications. However, single sideband optical modulation is often thought to provide lower RF output power than traditional dual sideband modulation techniques. While true in one specific case, it is not true in all cases. We theoretically and experimentally analyze the RF performance of a photonic link utilizing a Z-cut dual-electrode Mach–Zehnder intensity modulator with a 90° RF hybrid that produces optical single sideband modulation. The single sideband performance is compared to double sideband modulation using the same Mach–Zehnder modulator in either a push–pull configuration using a 180° RF hybrid or a single-arm drive configuration. The optical sideband powers, RF output power and the output intercept power and spur-free dynamic range of the third-order intermodulation nonlinearity are compared both theoretically and experimentally for each of the three cases. The performance of a double sideband modulated link using an X-cut inherently push–pull Mach–Zehnder modulator is also compared theoretically, assuming the same Vπ and insertion loss as the dual-electrode Mach–Zehnder modulator.

    摘要: Continuous growth of data tra?c in optical access networks is driving the increase of utilized data rates even up to 25 Gbit/s per wavelength. While due to utilization of signals with large electrical bandwidth, requirements on the bandwidth of electrical and electro-optical components increase signi?cantly. Addressing that, the feasibility of application of the minimal transmitter and receiver bandwidth has received considerable attention. In this research, via numerical simulation in VPI Photonics Design Suite software we evaluate the impact of the shape of MZM frequency response based on amplitude frequency response (S21) from commercial MZM speci?cation. Moreover, addressing the requirements on numerical simulation models that ensure simulation of MZM frequency response curve for prediction of the overall system performance, we have also evaluated several analytical frequency responses (corresponding to the responses of 1 and 4-pole, Bessel and Gaussian ?lters) with di?erent 3-dB bandwidth values. Based on the obtained results, we propose the approach for the simulation of MZM frequency response that is the most relevant for our utilized PAM-4 modulated WDM-PON system with 25 Gbit/s bitrate per channel.

    摘要: A highly linear broadband photonic-assisted analog-to-digital converter (ADC) based on high-frequency optical sampling utilizing a dual output Mach–Zehnder modulator operating with signal frequencies up to 50 GHz is presented. The pulses employed in the optical sampling were generated by a cavity-less pulse source operated at 10 GHz in preference to conventional mode-locked lasers. The optical sampling front-end greatly extends the operational frequency range of the Nyquist limited electronic digitization back-end. The performance of the sampling system is characterized with 7.1 effective number of bits (ENOBs) at 40 with 5 GHz fully accessible bandwidth, and greater than 99 dB·Hz2/3 spurious free dynamic range for the 30–40 GHz frequency range. Furthermore, more than 8 ENOB was achieved by reducing the effective bandwidth to 1 GHz with a digital ?lter, demonstrating the additional advantage of using a higher sampling rate compared to previous demonstrations. A new ?gure of merit of photonic-assisted sub-sampled ADCs is also presented accompanied with a comparison to previous implementations.
