摘要: Bandwidth constraints is, nowadays, a mayor problem in the implementation of next generation 5G networks. In order to cope with increasing bandwidth demands, the use of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum, together with Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology has been proposed. In this work, we will present our recent advances in the generation of mmWave signals for 5G using Microwave Photonics.

Microwave photonics‐based all optical wavelength conversion of Nyquist‐DP‐16QAM for flex‐grid optical networks with 112 Gbps
摘要: We propose and demonstrate an all optical wavelength conversion of Nyquist differential phase 16 quadrature amplitude modulation based on microwave photonics signal processing for flex-grid optical networks. By analyzing the mechanism of the microwave photonics and the components, multi-adjusting the parameters of wavelength tunable laser with smooth and adjustable optical intensity can be obtained. Then, the multi-channel photonic signals with the minimal guard space of 5 GHz can be obtained, which provide more than 20 flex-grids for optical transmission with transparent rate and format. The optical power of converted wavelengths, optical signal-to-noise ratio, error vector magnitude, and bit error rate (BER) are studied under the condition of different flex-grids, the frequencies of which are from 15 GHz to 36 GHz. The channel frequency spacing and amplitude of the converted wavelength can be dynamically adjusted via parameter configuration. Flex-grid spacing strategies and channel selecting strategies are given. The BER performance of all converted channels can fall below the forward error correction threshold of 3.8 × 10?3 by optimizing the optical power of the receiver end. The results show the tradeoff between the BER and the detected optical power of the receiver end. These research findings could provide solutions for spectrum allocation and routing selection when wavelength conversion is needed in optical links.

A Versatile Silicon-Silicon Nitride Photonics Platform for Enhanced Functionalities and Applications
摘要: Silicon photonics is one of the most prominent technology platforms for integrated photonics and can support a wide variety of applications. As we move towards a mature industrial core technology, we present the integration of silicon nitride (SiN) material to extend the capabilities of our silicon photonics platform. Depending on the application being targeted, we have developed several integration strategies for the incorporation of SiN. We present these processes, as well as key components for dedicated applications. In particular, we present the use of SiN for athermal multiplexing in optical transceivers for datacom applications, the nonlinear generation of frequency combs in SiN micro-resonators for ultra-high data rate transmission, spectroscopy or metrology applications and the use of SiN to realize optical phased arrays in the 800–1000 nm wavelength range for Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) applications. These functionalities are demonstrated using a 200 mm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible pilot line, showing the versatility and scalability of the Si-SiN platform.

16-channel dual-tuning wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer
摘要: A 16-channel dual tuning wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer based on silicon on insulator platform is demonstrated, which is both peak wavelength tunable and output optical power tunable. The wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer consists of an arrayed waveguide grating for wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing, a heater for peak wavelength tuning and a variable optical attenuator based on p–i–n carrier-injection structure for optical power tuning. The experimental results show that the insertion loss on chip of the device is 3.7 dB–5.7 dB and the crosstalk is 7.5 dB–9 dB. For the tunability of the peak wavelength, 1.058-nm wavelength tunability is achieved with 271.2-mW power consumption, and the average modulation efficiency is 3.9244 nm/W; for the tunability of the optical power, the optical power equalization is achieved in all 16 channels, 20-dB attenuation is achieved with 144.07-mW power consumption, and the raise/fall time of VOA is 35 ns/42 ns.

WaterSpy: A High Sensitivity, Portable Photonic Device for Pervasive Water Quality Analysis
摘要: In this paper, we present WaterSpy, a project developing an innovative, compact, cost-effective photonic device for pervasive water quality sensing, operating in the mid-IR spectral range. The approach combines the use of advanced Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) employing the Vernier effect, used as light source, with novel, fibre-coupled, fast and sensitive Higher Operation Temperature (HOT) photodetectors, used as sensors. These will be complemented by optimised laser driving and detector electronics, laser modulation and signal conditioning technologies. The paper presents the WaterSpy concept, the requirements elicited, the preliminary architecture design of the device, the use cases in which it will be validated, while highlighting the innovative technologies that contribute to the advancement of the current state of the art.

A microwave photonic phase-tunable mixer with local oscillator frequency doubling
摘要: A microwave photonic phase-tunable mixer with a doubled local oscillator (LO) frequency is presented based on an integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DPMZM). A radio frequency (RF) signal is sent to one of the sub-DPMZMs via an electrical 90° hybrid coupler, and the carrier-suppressed single-sideband (CS-SSB) modulation is output. Another sub-DPMZM is modulated by a LO signal, and the 2nd-order carrier-suppressed double-sideband (CS-DSB) modulation is produced by combining a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). A single bias voltage of the modulator can change the phase shift linearly. The mixing signal with double LO frequency and phase shift can be acquired after the photodetector. Experimental setup is implemented, and the results indicate that the spur suppression ratios of the up/down-converted signals are 22.5 dB and 25.2 dB. The spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) values are 102.97 dB·Hz2/3 in the down-conversion mode and 100.81 dB·Hz2/3 in the up-conversion mode. The phase shift can be varied continuously in the range of 360°. The proposed compact link is characterized by function multiplexing, half reduction of the LO frequency and high electrical purity.

摘要: Ultra low loss arbitrary-ratio multimode interference (MMI) splitters are realized by utilizing tilted tapers with minimum excess loss predicted to be 0.05dB and the maximum no more than 0.215dB. the comparison in Fig1(b), (c) and (d), the joggle phenomenon is eased by using tilted tapers and the corresponding excess loss is also reduced.

摘要: We demonstrate optical tuning in hybrid barium titanate-silicon photonic structures. Individual resonances of a multi-ring resonator are coalesced into a single resonance. Critically, device operation is stable in time. Our devices enable adjustable wavelength filters and offer a low power solution to compensate fabrication imperfections.
