  • Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for multimode polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings

    摘要: For strain sensing applications, we develop a simple and accurate Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in multimode optical fibers. As multimode FBG spectra generally exhibit multiple peaks, simply tracking some particular spectral peaks (i.e., maximum detection) results in measurement failure when the strain is large. Here, using an FBG inscribed in a perfluorinated graded-index multimode polymer optical fiber, we experimentally evaluate the new method by comparing its performance with those of other demodulation algorithms, such as the maximum and centroid detection methods. Finally, using this method, we demonstrate the accurate measurement of strain of up to 1.0%.

  • On-line Writing of Fiber Bragg Grating Array on a Two-mode Optical Fiber for Sensing Applications

    摘要: On-line fabricated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array and its sensing potentials have attracted plenty of attention in recent years. In this paper, FBG arrays are written on-line on a two-mode fiber, and this two-mode fiber Bragg grating (TM-FBG) is further experimentally investigated for temperature and curvature sensing. The responses of this sensor were characterized by 11.2 pm/°C for temperature and ?0.21 dB/m?1 for curvature, respectively. Based on the measurements, a dual-parameter fiber sensing system was developed, which can realize the quasi-distributed, simultaneous detection of temperature and curvature, making it suitable for structural health monitoring or perimeter security.

  • Stable injection locking with slotted Fabry–Perot lasers at 2 <i>μ</i> m

    摘要: Injection locking has many applications in telecommunications systems, such as narrowing linewidths, increasing bandwidth and improving filtering. Beyond telecommunications, injection locking is widely used in remote sensing. This is of particular interest for applications in the 2 μm region, where gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane have identifiable absorption features. In this paper, we demonstrate stable injection locking with slotted Fabry–Perot lasers in the 2 μm wavelength region. Injection locking was observed in both the optical domain and power spectrum; with key features recorded such as injection ‘pulling’, side-mode suppression and the characteristic quiet region in the electrical domain denoting single-frequency emission and stable locking. The effect of varying the injection ratio was investigated, with a decreased injection ratio corresponding to a reduction in the locking bandwidth. Finally, the lasers were shown to remain injection locked, with no thermal drift, for over 24 h, indicating their suitability for implementation in a real-world telecommunications system.

  • Ultrasensitive refractive index sensor based on parallel-connected dual Fabry-Perot interferometers with Vernier effect

    摘要: A kind of ultrasensitive refractive index sensor based on parallel-connected dual Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) with Vernier effect is proposed and demonstrated. The open and closed cavity FPIs are used as the sensing and reference units, respectively. The Vernier effect is realized by superimposing the reflective comb spectra of the dual FPIs, which have slightly different free spectral ranges. The open groove of the open cavity FPI provides a convenient, efficient and economical method for filling in or draining out the cavity. The stability, repeatability and temperature response of the structures are investigated. Experimental results indicate that the proposed sensing structure features high sensitivity, good stability, quick and accurate measurement.

  • Fiber Brag grating monitoring of a morphing wing based on a polyvinyl chloride reinforced silicone substrate

    摘要: Here, the three-dimensional (3D) shape monitoring of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-reinforced silicone substrate for a morphing wing is detailed, using Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. An optical ?ber FBG sensor was embedded into a soft silicone substrate, which was glued onto the surface of a PVC substrate. This substrate was aligned with the morphing wing’s ?exible ribs of the. Sensing experiments were carried out both with and without the PVC reinforced silicone substrate, and the sensitivity and repeatability of the two sensors were compared. The PVC-reinforced silicone substrate sensor was calibrated using standard curvature calibration blocks to obtain a relationship between wavelength shift and the bending curvature of the PVC-reinforced silicone substrate, and the wing shape was reconstructed at di?erent deformation states. Several wing shapes were also reconstructed using a precise visual measurement system. Comparing the FBG sensing method with this visual measurement system demonstrated the e?ectiveness of the FBG method proposed here. Its maximum error was < 3%, so it can successfully sense the shape of a PVC-reinforced silicone substrate for morphing wing. The FBG sensing method therefore has potential for applications in shape monitoring in the ?elds of soft robotics and ?exible biosensor monitoring.

  • Monolithic metal dimer-on-film structure: new plasmonic properties introduced by the underlying metal

    摘要: Dimers -two closely-spaced metallic nanostructures- are one of the primary nanoscale geometries in plasmonics, supporting high local field enhancements in their interparticle junction under excitation of their hybridized “bonding” plasmon. However, when a dimer is fabricated on a metallic substrate, its characteristics are changed profoundly. Here we examine the properties of an Au dimer on an Au substrate. This structure supports a bright “bonding” dimer plasmon, screened by the metal, and a lower energy magnetic charge transfer plasmon. Changing the dielectric environment of the dimer-on-film structure reveals a broad family of higher-order hybrid plasmons in the visible region of the spectrum. Both the localized surface plasmons resonances (LSPR) of the individual dimer-on-film structures as well as their collective surface lattice resonances (SLR) show a highly sensitive refractive index sensing response. Implementation of such all-metal magnetic-resonant nanostructures offers a promising route to achieve higher-performance LSPR- and SLR-based plasmonic sensors.

  • A through-bond energy transfer-based ratiometric fluorescent pH probe: For extreme acidity and extreme alkaline detection with large emission shifts

    摘要: A ratiometric fluorescence pH probe 1 based on through-bond energy transfer (TBET) with a 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HBO) as donor and a Rhodamine derivative as acceptor is developed through simple condensation reaction. The probe exhibits a ratiometric fluorescence emission (I593/I422) characteristics and linear response to extreme acidity range of 5.00-2.88, and a ratiometric fluorescence emission (I555/I422) characteristics and linear response to extreme alkaline range of 10.00-13.78, respectively. Moreover, 1 possesses highly selective response to pH over metal ions, good reversibility and excellent photostability. Probe 1 is cellpermeable and can distinguish near pH 5.55 fluctuations in Hela cells. Furthermore, 1 can be immobilized on a test paper, which shows a rapid and reversible colorimetric response to HCl/NH3 vapor by the naked-eye.

  • Femtosecond Spectroscopy of Au Hot-Electron Injection into TiO2: Evidence for Au/TiO2 Plasmon Photocatalysis by Bactericidal Au Ions and Related Phenomena

    摘要: In the present work, we provide evidence for visible light irradiation of the Au/TiO2 nanoparticles’ surface plasmon resonance band (SPR) leading to electron injection from the Au nanoparticles to the conduction band of TiO2. The Au/TiO2 SPR band is shown to greatly enhance the light absorption of TiO2 in the visible region. Evidence is presented for the light absorption by the Au/TiO2 plasmon bands leading to the dissolution of Au nanoparticles. This dissolution occurs concomitantly with the injection of the hot electrons generated by the Au plasmon into the conduction band of TiO2. The electron injection from the Au nanoparticles into TiO2 was followed by femtosecond spectroscopy. The formation of Au ions was further confirmed by the spectral shift of the transient absorption spectra of Au/TiO2. The spectral changes of the SPR band of Au/TiO2 nanoparticles induced by visible light were detected by spectrophotometer, and the morphological transformation of Au/TiO2 was revealed by electron microscopy techniques as well. Subsequently, the fate of the Au ions was sorted out during the growth and biofilm formation for some selected Gram-negative bacteria. This study compares the bactericidal mechanism of Au ions and Ag ions, which were found to be substantially different depending on the selected cell used as a probe.

  • Luminescence and anion recognition performance of mononuclear Eu(III) complexes with N- and O- donor pyridine derivatives

    摘要: A series of Eu(III) complexes with pyridine-2-carboxamide (PCA), pyridine-2-carboxaldoxime (PCAO), pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride (PDCA) or pyridine-2-methanol (PM) as primary ligands and 4,4′-dimethoxy-2,2′-bipyridine (DMBP) as ancillary ligand were synthesized. The interaction between the ligands and complexes were confirmed by FT-IR study. The complexes were abbreviated as [Eu(PCA)3DMBP].Cl3 (C1), [Eu(PCAO)3DMBP].Cl3 (C2), [Eu(PDCA)3DMBP].Cl3 (C3) and [Eu(PM)3DMBP].Cl3 (C4). Optical studies were done by UV–vis spectroscopy and PL spectroscopy. The highest intrinsic luminescent quantum yield (53.42%) and lifetime value (1456 μs) were found for C3. Lowest quantum yield was exhibited by C2. Anion sensing studies of all the complexes were done by UV–vis and PL spectroscopy and it was observed that complex C1 showed remarkable change in optical properties upon addition of F? and HSO4? ions. Thus C1 can be used as optical sensor for F? and HSO4? ions. The FQD for F? and HSO4? ions were found to be 6.55 and 3.58 respectively for C1.

  • Highly sensitive and selective label-free detection of dopamine in human serum based on nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots decorated on Au nanoparticles: Mechanistic insights through microscopic and spectroscopic studies

    摘要: A rapid, facile and label-free sensing strategy is developed for the detection of dopamine (DA) in the real samples by exploiting nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) decorated on Au nanoparticles (Au@N-GQD). The as-grown Au@N-GQD exhibits strong blue fluorescence at room temperature and the fluorescence intensity is drastically quenched in presence of DA in neutral medium. The mechanistic insight into the DA sensing by Au@N-GQDs is explored here by careful monitoring of the evolution of the interaction of Au NPs and N-GQDs with DA under different conditions through electron microscopic and spectroscopic studies. The highly sensitive and selective detection of DA over a wide range is attributed to the unique core-shell structure formation with Au@N-GQD hybrids. The quenching mechanism involves the ground state complex formation as well as electron transfer from N-GQDs. The presence of Au NPs in Au@N-GQD hybrids accelerates the quenching process (~14 fold higher than bare N-GQDs) by the formation of stable dopamine-o-quinone (DQ) in this present detection scheme. The fluorescence quenching follows the linear Stern-Volmer plot in the range 0-100 μM, establishing its efficacy as a fluorescence-based DA sensor with a limit of detection (LOD) 590 nM, which is ~27 fold lower than the lowest abnormal concentration of DA in serum (16 μM). This sensing scheme is also successively applied to trace DA in Brahmaputra river water sample with LOD 480 nM including its satisfactory recovery (95-112%). Our studies reveal a novel sensing pathway for DA through the core-shell structure formation and it is highly promising for the design of efficient biological and environmental sensor.
