  • Structural and photocatalytic properties of co-doped hybrid ZrO2–TiO2 photocatalysts

    摘要: In this study, pure TiO2, ZrO2, and hybrid ZrO2–TiO2 photocatalysts were synthesized through solgel process and calcined at three different temperatures. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrometer, and photoluminescence (PL) spectrometer. The PXRD patterns show that the rutile phase of TiO2 was suppressed through co-doping with ZrO2 and produced small crystallite size. The hybrid photocatalysts with small crystallite size recorded the highest surface area of 114.7 m2/g compared to pure TiO2 and ZrO2 photocatalysts as confirmed by BET analysis. Irregular size and shape was observed in the hybrid photocatalysts compared to spherical shape and size in TiO2 and flaky shape in ZrO2 as shown by the FESEM images. The optical properties of the photocatalysts investigated using UV–Vis spectroscopy showed a decrease in band gap energy of pure TiO2 through linear extrapolation from the Tauc’s plot despite the slightly higher band gap energy of the hybrid photocatalysts. However, PL analysis showed that doping of ZrO2 into TiO2 increased the separation efficiency of the electron–hole pairs and enhanced the photocatalytic activity. The phenol degradation of the hybrid ZrO2–TiO2 photocatalysts was higher compared to those of the pure TiO2 and ZrO2.

  • Photocatalyst properties depend on the mix

    摘要: Photocatalysts use light to power chemical reactions in a whole host of applications from fuel cells to water remediation. There are many ways to improve the performance of titania (TiO2) photocatalysts from using catalyst support materials, which increase photosensitization rates, and help break down organic pollutants, to doping or co-doping with other atoms to expand the absorption range. Since using metal atoms such as dopants is problematic for water treatment if they leach into the environment, non-metallic dopants like nitrogen (N) are considered safer. Researchers from the University of South Africa have used these two strategies in conjunction to produce N-doped TiO2 photocatalysts on a carbon nanotube (CNT) support and systematically compared the effects of using different synthesis routes. Edward N. Nxumalo and his team find that photocatalysts with distinctly different properties and performance are produced depending on whether a hydrothermal or solgel synthetic route is used.

  • Tuning the optical properties of ZnO:Cd by doping La and Y

    摘要: Zinc oxide doped with Cadmium and rare earth elements synthesized by solgel auto combustion route is reported in this work. The studies have been carried out to analyze the structural, morphological and optical properties of Cd doped ZnO and rare earth doped ZnCdO. The XRD analysis reveals that the addition of rare earth impurity decreases the particle size of ZnCdO. La doped ZnCdO has the least particle size among the samples of ZnCdO and rare earth doped ZnCdO. The morphological changes due to the addition of rare earth impurities have been found. Samples of La doped ZnCdO shows a pillar like morphology. The hexagonal structures are prominently seen in the SEM micrographs of the samples of ZnCdO. The UV-Visible spectral analyses show that the bandgap reduces when ZnCdO is doped with the rare earth impurities. The photoluminescence spectra show the broad spectrum in visible region exhibited by ZnO and a scanty UV emission. The UV emission of rare earth doped samples decreases due to the destruction in the crystal structure. The rare earth doped ZnCdO shows a small peak in green emission that decreases when rare earth impurities are doped. There is a uniform spectral response other than a small Gaussian like green peak. The overall analyses show that the samples can be used in optoelectronic applications to work in the visible region.
