摘要: We present a silica-based thulium-doped fibre amplifier in the 1628-1655nm waveband based on Tm/Ge co-doped fibre. Up to 19dB external small signal gain and a noise figure of 4.4dB are achieved at 1655nm.

Soliton mode-locking in thulium-doped fibre laser by evanescent field interaction with reduced graphene oxide-titanium dioxide saturable absorber
摘要: Soliton mode locking pulse generation in a thulium-doped fibre laser (TDFL) by evanescent wave interaction from a D-shaped fiber coated with rGO-TiO2 nanoparticles is proposed and demonstrated. The rGO-TiO2 nanoparticle coating serves as a saturable absorber (SA), and generates a mode locked pulse with a repetition rate, average output power and pulse width of 9.28 MHz, 11.17 nW and 1.49 ps respectively. The proposed laser has a central lasing wavelength of 1939.4 nm, which is the longest as of yet generated by evanescent wave interaction in a TDFL. An average signal-to-noise ratio of around 50 dB is obtained from the generation pulse, with minimal power and wavelength fluctuations indicating high stability. The proposed laser would have significant applications in various fields, particularly medicine for its operation in the eye-safe region of 2 μm.

Mode-locked near-infrared thulium doped fibre laser using evanescent field effect with Bi <sub/>2</sub> O <sub/>3</sub> saturable absorber
摘要: Using the evanescent field effect, a high power passively mode-locked laser with a pulse duration of 1.85 ps and the pulse energy of 13.15 pJ is demonstrated. A Bi2O3 solution is used as a saturable absorber (SA) on a side polished fibre incorporated into a thulium doped fibre laser cavity for operation in the mid-infrared range. The 37.61% SA has a modulation depth and creates a highly stable mode-locked pulse output with a short pulse duration. The calculated net cavity dispersion at central wavelength is ?1.4 ps2, indicating operation is in the anomalous dispersion regime and confirmed by the presence of Kelly’s side-bands observed in the generated optical spectrum. Radio frequency analysis reveals a high signal to noise ratio, making this laser stable for use in telecommunication systems.

Molybdenum tungsten disulphide (MoWS <sub/>2</sub> ) as a saturable absorber for a passively Q-switched thulium/holmium-codoped fibre laser
摘要: In this work, a passively Q-switched Thulium/Holmium-doped fibre laser (THDFL) using a molybdenum tungsten disulphide (MoWS2) saturable absorber (SA) is proposed and demonstrated. The MoWS2 nanosheets are prepared by hydrothermal exfoliation and then suspended in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin film host. Q-switching of the THDFL at a maximum 1550 nm pump power of 445.2 mW gives a maximum repetition rate and minimum pulse width of 36.3 kHz and 2.8 μs with a corresponding pulse energy of 86.4 nJ and peak power of 31.1 mW. The MoWS2 based Q-switched THDFL’s output has a very high signal-to-noise value of ~ 62.2 dB which strongly indicates that the laser is working in a stable operation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of MoWS2 as a passive SA in a THDFL for operation in the 2.0 μm region. The proposed laser would have significant medical and sensing applications, particularly at the biologically active 2.0–2.1 μm regions.

摘要: The large size and electromagnetic interference of microphones array are long standing challenges for sound source localization. Here an all-fibre vector acoustic sensor based on crossed microfiber Bragg gratings (micro-FBGs) has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated that enables the two-dimension sound source localization with a size less than 1.5mm. Two micro-FBGs inscribed in the Co2+-doped fibre are fabricated through a hydrofluoric acid solution, which are placed parallel to each other to form a micro-FBG pair. Based on the self-heating and asymmetric temperature distribution of two Co2+-doped fibres, the crossed micro-FBGs provide a direct two-dimensional measurement of the acoustic particle velocity. The experimental results show that an orientation sensitivity of 1.57 mV/deg for the micro-FBGs is achieved with a figure-of-eight response of the acoustic source direction. Meanwhile, the direction responses of two crossed pairs of micro-FBGs are exactly orthogonal to each other, which could detect the sound source localization. The all-fibre vector acoustic sensor is immune to electromagnetic interference, which appears to have a variety of potential applications, including research in acoustic communication, pipeline monitoring and navigation, etc.

Ytterbium-doped fibre femtosecond laser offers robust operation with deep and precise microsurgery of C. elegans neurons
摘要: Laser microsurgery is a powerful tool for neurobiology, used to ablate cells and sever neurites in-vivo. We compare a relatively new laser source to two well-established designs. Rare-earth-doped mode-locked fibre lasers that produce high power pulses recently gained popularity for industrial uses. Such systems are manufactured to high standards of robustness and low maintenance requirements typical of solid-state lasers. We demonstrate that an Ytterbium-doped fibre femtosecond laser is comparable in precision to a Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser (1–2 micrometres), but with added operational reliability. Due to the lower pulse energy required to ablate, it is more precise than a solid-state nanosecond laser. Due to reduced scattering of near infrared light, it can lesion deeper (more than 100 micrometres) in tissue. These advantages are not specific to the model system ablated for our demonstration, namely neurites in the nematode C. elegans, but are applicable to other systems and transparent tissue where a precise micron-resolution dissection is required.

Tungsten tri-oxide (WO <sub/>3</sub> ) film absorber for generating Q-switched pulses in erbium laser
摘要: This paper reports a new type of passive saturable absorber (SA) made of transition metal oxide (TMO) embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The Tungsten trioxide (WO3)-PVA SA is placed in an erbium-doped fibre laser cavity to produce Q-switched pulses operating at 1562.82 nm. The pulse laser starts to manifest at the threshold pump power of 40 mW and continues to exist until the maximum pump power of 195 mW. Within that pump power range, its pulse energy, repetition rate and pulse width vary from 98 to 142.85 nJ, 29.86 to 56.7 kHz and 5.032 to 1.85 μs, respectively. The pulse train is stable with a signal to noise ratio of 70 dB. This is the first demonstration of a Q-switched laser using such a SA.

Tunable Q-switched ytterbium-doped fibre laser with Nickel Oxide saturable absorber
摘要: A passively Q-switched ytterbium-doped fibre laser (YDFL) using a nickel oxide-based saturable absorber is proposed and demonstrated. The Q-switched YDFL is capable of generating a stable output with a minimum pulse width of 6.9 ls and maximum repetition rate of 57.01 kHz. The generated pulses are highly stable, with an observed signal-to-noise ratio of * 33 dB. The output of the laser can be tuned over a wavelength range of 18 nm from 1035 to 1053 nm. The Q-switched YDFL would find use in multiple applications ranging from medicine to manufacturing.

Tapered erbium-doped fibre laser system delivering 10 MW of peak power
摘要: We consider a fibre laser system generating ~10-mJ, ~500-fs pulses with a peak power of ~10 MW at a repetition rate of 100 kHz and emission wavelength of 1.56 mm. The system is based on a master oscillator – power amplifier configuration. The amplifier ensures chirped-pulse amplification. The pulses are then compressed by a dispersive grating compressor. The output amplifier stage is based on a specially designed tapered large mode area erbium-doped fibre for suppressing nonlinear effects. The experimental data agree with numerical simulation results for the stretcher, amplifier and compressor. The stretcher and amplifier have been simulated using a generalised nonlinear Schr?dinger equation. In addition, numerical simulation results suggest that optimising the stretcher and compressor will potentially allow the peak power of the system to be scaled up to ~30 MW.

All fiber mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser using a novel femtosecond-laser-inscribed 45°-plane-by-plane-tilted fiber grating
摘要: Using the novel 45°-plane-by-plane-tilted fiber grating inscribed by a femtosecond laser as an in-line fiber polarizer, we demonstrate an all-fiber passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser. We characterize the grating for polarization-dependent loss, indicating high contrast and broad operating wavelength. The 45°-tilted fiber grating together with polarization controller act as an artificial saturable absorber suitable for mode-locking through nonlinear polarization rotation. By properly pre-adjusting the polarization controller, stable mode-locking is achieved for a pump power in the range of 300 mW–400 mW at 1565 nm. Owing to the net anomalous dispersion, a stable mode-locked soliton pulse centered at 1870 nm with a pulse width of 862 fs is reported at a fundamental repetition rate of 22.34 MHz. A long-term stability test reveals that the laser is quite stable for 24 h under laboratory conditions, confirming the capabilities of the 45°-tilted fiber grating for stable laser operation.
