  • Autogenous fiber laser welding of 70/30 Cu-Ni alloy plates

    摘要: Cupronickel alloys such as 70/30 Cu-Ni have excellent resistance to sea water corrosion and anti-fouling properties, and thus have been widely used for naval and offshore applications. Traditionally, arc welding and brazing processes have been used to weld such materials. In contrast, laser beam welding is a promising technology due to its high productivity, good process flexibility and reliability, and good welding integrity. In the present work, a high power fiber laser system is used to weld 5-mm thick 70/30 Cu-Ni alloy plates in a configuration of butt joints. Then, the laser welded joints are evaluated in terms of microstructures, defects, and mechanical properties (hardness, face and root bend, and tensile) in accordance with the applicable International Organization for Standardization and Defence Standard specifications.

  • Agarose coated macro-bend fiber sensor for relative humidity and temperature measurement at 2?μm

    摘要: We proposed an agarose coated macro-bend fiber (AC-MBF) sensor for relative humidity and temperature measurement at 2 μm. Stronger resonance dips in the bent fiber sensor can be found at 2 μm region, which is at the peak of water absorption better for humidity sensing. Experimentally, such an AC-MBF sensor was very sensitive to humidity at 2 μm region. The highest sensitivity of 0.314 nm/%RH was achieved in the range of 40–95%, which was much higher than the wavelength–modulated sensors at 1.5 μm reported previously. Meanwhile, the sensor is also very sensitive to temperature. The maximum temperature sensitivity of the macro-bend fiber sensor is 5.37 nm/°C. Additionally, AC-MBF sensor is with fast response time and recovery time of ~300 ms and 600 ms, respectively.

  • Circular Corrugated Miter Bend and Gap Losses for Broadband Frequency Applications

    摘要: Circular corrugated waveguides are often used in fusion applications at single, multiple, or broadband millimeter frequencies due to their low ohmic loss, expected large frequency bandwidth, and direct coupling to free-space Gaussian modes. For single-frequency corrugated waveguide systems, transmission line components can be optimized to the desired frequency. For broadband or multiple-frequency applications, this is not possible. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that the frequency bandwidth of circular corrugated waveguides can be compromised by diffraction losses to miter bends and gaps. It is shown that if the corrugation depth differs significantly from λ/4, a theory can substantially underpredict the gap and miter bend losses. The simulations are also shown to compare favorably to experimental measurements. To improve the transmission line performance in large frequency bandwidth systems, such as 33–165 GHz reflectometry, reducing the number of miter bends may, therefore, be necessary. For the improvement of performance in narrower frequency bandwidth or multiple-frequency systems, especially high-powered systems, wavelength-dependent techniques may be applicable. One such application is shown for a Bragg reflection technique to reduce the thermal load to insulating ceramic rings in a dc break component for multiple-frequency ITER electron cyclotron heating transmission lines.

  • Fiber Vector Bend Sensor Based on Multimode Interference and Image Tapping

    摘要: A grating-less fiber vector bend sensor is demonstrated using a standard single mode fiber spliced to a multimode fiber as a multimode interference device. The ring-shaped light intensity distribution at the end of the multimode fiber is subject to a vector transition in response to the fiber bend. Instead of comprehensive imaging processing for the analysis, the image can be tapped out by a seven-core fiber spliced to the other end of the multimode fiber. The seven-core fiber is further guided to seven single mode fibers via a commercial fan-out device. By comparing the relative light intensities received at the seven outputs, both the bend radius and its direction can be determined. Experiment has shown that a slight bend displacement of 10 μm over a 1.2-cm-long multimode fiber in the X direction (bend angle of 0.382°) causes a distinctive power imbalance of 4.6 dB between two chosen outputs (numbered C4 and C7). For the same displacement in the Y direction, the power ratio between the previous two outputs C4 and C7 remains constant, while the imbalance between another pair (C3 and C4) rises significantly to 7.0 dB.

  • Vibration sensing based on macrobending loss in a standard single mode fiber loop structure

    摘要: A new optical fiber sensor for vibration measurement has been proposed and demonstrated. This paper realizes vibration sensing based on the macrobending loss in a standard single-mode fiber loop. The experiments shows the suggested sensor enable us to measure multi-frequency vibrations with the resolution as high as 0.04 Hz. The crosstalk between temperature and vibration can be ignored because the macrobending loss is insensitive to the ambient temperature.

  • Compact IR synchrotron beamline design

    摘要: Third-generation storage rings are massively evolving due to the very compact nature of the multi-bend achromat (MBA) lattice which allows amazing decreases of the horizontal electron beam emittance, but leaves very little place for infrared (IR) extraction mirrors to be placed, thus prohibiting traditional IR beamlines. In order to circumvent this apparent restriction, an optimized optical layout directly integrated inside a SOLEIL synchrotron dipole chamber that delivers intense and almost aberration-free beams in the near- to mid-IR domain (1–30 mm) is proposed and analyzed, and which can be integrated into space-restricted MBA rings. Since the optics and chamber are interdependent, the feasibility of this approach depends on a large part on the technical ability to assemble mechanically the optics inside the dipole chamber and control their resulting stability and thermo-mechanical deformation. Acquiring this expertise should allow dipole chambers to provide almost aberration-free IR synchrotron sources on current and ‘ultimate’ MBA storage rings.

The ?rst ?ber has a negative curvature of the core-cladding boundary formed by eight touching trapezoidal capillaries and the second one has the nodeless structure designed by six non-touching round capillaries.

  • Polymer Based PCF with High Nonlinearity and Low Bend Loss: A New Modeling

    摘要: The effect of ellipticity ratio on low bend loss, high nonlinearity, wideband high birefringence and low confinement loss in a hexagonal spiral thermoplastic polymer based PCF having air holes with Kerr nonlinearity is investigated. Moreover, the above all property are simulated initially with wide range of wavelength (for different value ellipticity ratio) and secondly with ellipticity ratio at an operating wavelength of 1.55 μm. Through the optimization of arrangement and diameter of elliptical air holes, the designed spiral PCF offers low bend loss, high nonlinearity depends on mode field area (As small as mode field area, increase the nonlinearity), high birefringence and nonzero dispersion for X/Y polarization within the wavelength range of 0.5 to 1.75 μm. These results seem to be most useful in optical communication.

  • Compact and Fabrication-Tolerant Waveguide Bends Based on Quadratic Reflectors

    摘要: We propose and experimentally demonstrate a broadband, polarization-diverse compact bending design for low-index-contrast waveguides, where light is re-directed via total internal reflection (TIR) on an air-trench quadratic (elliptical or parabolic) reflector surface. Compared to prior work based on flat TIR mirrors, the quadratic reflector design contributes to minimized mode leakage and reduced optical losses, enabling high-density, scalable photonic architectures at the chip and board levels. Moreover, we develop a self-aligned fabrication process where the reflector and the waveguide segments are defined in a single lithography step, thereby circumventing the alignment sensitivity issue common to traditional air trench structures. Our simulations predict bending losses down to < 0.14 dB per 90° and 180° bend at 850 nm wavelength, and we experimentally measure broadband losses of ~ 0.3 dB per 90° and 180° bend for both TE and TM polarizations in structures fabricated using standard UV lithography.
