Recent Advances in Brillouin Optical Correlation-Domain Reflectometry
摘要: Distributed ?ber-optic sensing based on Brillouin scattering has been extensively studied and many con?gurations have been developed so far. In this paper, we review the recent advances in Brillouin optical correlation-domain re?ectometry (BOCDR), which is known as a unique technique with intrinsic single-end accessibility, high spatial resolution, and cost ef?ciency. We brie?y discuss the advantages and disadvantages of BOCDR over other Brillouin-based distributed sensing techniques, and present the fundamental principle and properties of BOCDR with some special schemes for enhancing the performance. We also describe the recent development of a high-speed con?guration of BOCDR (slope-assisted BOCDR), which offers a beyond-nominal-resolution detectability. The paper is summarized with some future prospects.

Demonstration of a Reconfigurable Entangled Radio-Frequency Photonic Sensor Network
摘要: Quantum metrology takes advantage of nonclassical resources such as entanglement to achieve a sensitivity level below the standard quantum limit. To date, almost all quantum-metrology demonstrations are restricted to improving the measurement performance at a single sensor, but a plethora of applications require multiple sensors that work jointly to tackle distributed sensing problems. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable sensor network empowered by continuous-variable (CV) multipartite entanglement. Our experiment establishes a connection between the entanglement structure and the achievable quantum advantage in different distributed sensing problems. The demonstrated entangled sensor network is composed of three sensor nodes each equipped with an electro-optic transducer for the detection of radio-frequency (RF) signals. By properly tailoring the CV multipartite entangled states, the entangled sensor network can be reconfigured to maximize the quantum advantage in distributed RF sensing problems such as measuring the angle of arrival of an RF field. The rich physics of CV multipartite entanglement unveiled by our work would open a new avenue for distributed quantum sensing and would lead to applications in ultrasensitive positioning, navigation, and timing.

Long-Range Distributed Solar Irradiance Sensing Using Optical Fibers
摘要: Until recently, the amount of solar irradiance reaching the Earth surface was considered to be a steady value over the years. However, there is increasing observational evidence showing that this quantity undergoes substantial variations over time, which need to be addressed in different scenarios ranging from climate change to solar energy applications. With the growing interest in developing solar energy technology with enhanced efficiency and optimized management, the monitoring of solar irradiance at the ground level is now considered to be a fundamental input in the pursuit of that goal. Here, we propose the first fiber-based distributed sensor able of monitoring ground solar irradiance in real time, with meter scale spatial resolutions over distances of several tens of kilometers (up to 100 km). The technique is based on an optical fiber reflectometry technique (CP-φOTDR), which enables real time and long-range high-sensitivity bolometric measurements of solar radiance with a single optical fiber cable and a single interrogator unit. The method is explained and analyzed theoretically. A validation of the method is proposed using a solar simulator irradiating standard optical fibers, where we demonstrate the ability to detect and quantify solar irradiance with less than a 0.1 W/m2 resolution.

Measuring the heterogeneity of cement paste by truly distributed optical fiber sensors
摘要: In this study, a home-built Rayleigh scattering based optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) technique is used for the measurement of strain distribution in a loaded cement paste. The system offers a spatially-continuous strain measurement on an optical fiber with a spatial resolution of 1 cm, dynamic range of 1 km, measurement accuracy of ±2 microstrain, and an update rate of 10 Hz. The feasibility and performance of this technique for detection of uneven strain distribution are studied and evaluated. The distributed optical fiber sensors are embedded in a cement paste cantilever. A controlled deflection is applied at the free end of it, and the strain is measured. The results are compared with the values obtained from theoretical analysis using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and a finite element simulation. The comparison shows a reasonable consistence in overall deformation, demonstrating that the proposed technique can be used for real time strain monitoring in cement based materials; while this technique can reflect the uneven distribution of local strains due to the material heterogeneity with a controllable, high spatial resolution.
