  • Effects of repetitive polarization switching on the coercive voltage of Pt/Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3/Pt thin films analyzed using impedance spectroscopy

    摘要: We investigated the effect of repetitive switching of polarization on the ferroelectric Pt/Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3/Pt thin film capacitor by using impedance spectroscopy. From the Cole-Cole plot, the equivalent circuit is described as a combination of the bulk part (a capacitor), the interface part (the constant phase element (CPE), and a parallelly-connected resistor). The circuit parameters were analyzed at various stages of switching. An early increase and a subsequent decrease of the bulk capacitance may represent the wake-up and fatigue phenomena, respectively. The change in the interface part was characterized by an increase in resistance and the growth of n, the exponent of CPE, which may have come from a reduction of defects and the diminished inhomogeneity in the interfacial layer, respectively. The change in the resistance and the coefficient of the CPE in the interface part collectively resulted in an increase in the interfacial impedance. The coercive voltage, which may have intrinsically increased due to the repetitive switching, was even larger as a result of the increased interfacial impedance.

  • Influence of multiple laser peening on vibration fatigue properties of TC6 titanium alloy

    摘要: In this study, typical TC6 titanium alloy was taken to investigate the effects of multiple laser peening (LP) on the vibration fatigue properties and microstructural evolution. The vibration fatigue experiments were conducted, while the vibration fatigue life of the specimens before and after LP was compared and the fracture morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the measurements of residual stress and microhardness were carried out. The microstructures produced by different treatments were also characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The experimental results indicated that multiple LP could indeed enhance the vibration fatigue properties of TC6 titanium alloy. Comparing with the investigated specimen without LP, the vibration fatigue life of the specimen subjected to 5 times LP increased by 105.2%. Meanwhile, after 5 times LP, the surface residual stress transformed from tensile stress (+26 MPa) to compressive stress (?485 MPa), and the surface microhardness was 428 HV, which increased by 32.9% compared with the untreated sample. Additionally, high-density of dislocation and deformation twin were also generated after multiple LP. The improvement of vibration fatigue properties was attributed to the rewarding compressive residual stress and the beneficial microstructural evolution induced by multiple LP.

  • Subjective and objective evaluation of visual fatigue caused by continuous and discontinuous use of HMDs

    摘要: During continuous use of displays, a short rest can relax users' eyes and relieve visual fatigue. As one of the most important devices of virtual reality, head‐mounted displays (HMDs) can create an immersive 3D virtual world. When users have a short rest during the using of HMDs, they will experience a transition from virtual world to real world. In order to investigate how this change affects users' eye condition, we designed a 2 × 2 experiment to explore the effects of short rest during continuous using of HMDs and compared the results with those of 2D displays. The Visual Fatigue Scale, critical flicker frequency, visual acuity, pupillary diameter, and accommodation response of 80 participants were measured to assess the subject's performance. The experimental results indicated that a short rest during the using of 2D displays could significantly reduce users' visual fatigue. However, the experimental results of using HMDs showed that short rest during continuous using of HMD induced more severe symptoms of subjectively visual discomfort, but reduced the objectively visual fatigue.

  • Corrosion fatigue properties of narrow gap laser welded 301L stainless steel

    摘要: In this paper, the corrosion-fatigue behavior of 301L stainless steel (SS) welded joints using narrow gap laser wire welding under the different stress ratio and concentrations of Cl? has been investigated. Corrosion fatigue life curve (S-N) under different conditions was tested and fitted to obtain the fatigue limit. The microstructures and fracture surfaces of specimens were examined by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). EBSD results have shown that chromium depletion in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) contributes to the decrease of corrosion fatigue properties in the HAZ.

  • Closed-loop functional optogenetic stimulation

    摘要: Optogenetics has been used to orchestrate temporal- and tissue-specific control of neural tissues and offers a wealth of unique advantages for neuromuscular control. Here, we establish a closed-loop functional optogenetic stimulation (CL-FOS) system to control ankle joint position in murine models. Using the measurement of either joint angle or fascicle length as a feedback signal, we compare the controllability of CL-FOS to closed-loop functional electrical stimulation (CL-FES) and demonstrate significantly greater accuracy, lower rise times and lower overshoot percentages. We demonstrate orderly recruitment of motor units and reduced fatigue when performing cyclical movements with CL-FOS compared with CL-FES. We develop and investigate a 3-phase, photo-kinetic model to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for temporal variations in optogenetically activated neuromusculature during closed-loop control experiments. Methods and insights from this study lay the groundwork for the development of closed-loop optogenetic neuromuscular stimulation therapies and devices for peripheral limb control.

    摘要: There is growing interest for implementing tools to monitor cognitive performance in naturalistic environments. Recent technological progress has allowed the development of new generations of brain imaging systems such as dry electrodes electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate cortical activity in a variety of human tasks out of the laboratory. These highly portable brain imaging devices offer interesting prospects to implement passive brain computer interfaces (pBCI) and neuroadaptive technology. We developed a fNIRS-EEG based pBCI to monitor cognitive fatigue using engagement related features (EEG engagement ratio and wavelet coherence fNIRS based metrics). This mental state is known to impair cognitive performance and can jeopardize flight safety. In this preliminary study, four participants were asked to perform four identical traffic patterns along with a secondary auditory task in a flight simulator and in an actual light aircraft. The two first traffic patterns were considered as the low cognitive fatigue class, whereas the two last traffic patterns were considered as the high cognitive fatigue class. As expected, the pilots missed more auditory targets in the second part than in the first part of the experiment. Classification accuracy reached 87.2% in the flight simulator condition and 87.6% in the actual flight conditions when combining the two modalities. This study demonstrates that fNIRS and EEG-based pBCIs can monitor mental states in operational and noisy environments.

  • Method for Processing and Analysis of the Images of a Network of Thermal Fatigue Cracks on the Surfaces of Rollers of Continuous Casting Machines

    摘要: We propose an algorithm for the analysis of thermal fatigue cracks on the surfaces of rollers of continuous casting machines that does not require adaptation to images of various types and individual choice of parameters. For this purpose, the images are analyzed for a sufficiently large subset of the sets of values of the parameters. The result of this classification is regarded as a fuzzy set with a membership function of each element equal to the number of sets of parameters responsible for the detection of this element as a component of the frame of the damage grid.

  • A comparative study of laser metal deposited and forged Ti-6Al-4V alloy: Uniaxial mechanical response and vibration fatigue properties

    摘要: This paper conducts a comparative study on mechanical properties of LMD and forged Ti-6Al-4V, focusing on uniaxial compression, tension and shear response with different strain rates, and vibration fatigue behaviors with 45–50 Hz in frequency. The micro-observation on initial microstructures and fractures explains the mechanism of lower uniaxial strength, shorter fatigue life, and larger dispersion in fatigue life and fracture position of LMD sample compared with the forged counterpart. Initial void defects within LMD sample tend to be stress-concentration zone, further initiating fatigue cracks. The columnar β grains leads to anisotropy of fatigue life and crack propagation for LMD sample.

  • Gradient microstructure and vibration fatigue properties of 2024-T351 aluminium alloy treated by laser shock peening

    摘要: To investigate the improvement in vibration fatigue and the strengthening mechanism of laser shock peening, a nanosecond laser was used to strengthen the 2024-T351 aluminium alloy. Accordingly, the microstructure, residual stress, nanohardness and surface roughness of the treated alloy were measured. Subsequently, the vibration fatigue damage and fatigue life were evaluated, and the vibration fracture morphology was observed. The results showed that the grains in the peened surface were re?ned. A residual stress of ?141 MPa and a nanohardness of 3.1 GPa were obtained by laser shock peening. Based on the relationship between the peened microstructure and fracture morphology, it was deduced that an increase in the grain boundaries led to a lower crack initiation rate and a higher crack initiation life. The compressive residual stress decreased the crack growth rate and increased the crack growth life. Therefore, laser shock peening increases the total vibration fatigue life by about 63.5%.

  • Multichannel fiber laser acoustic emission sensor system for crack detection and location in accelerated fatigue testing of aluminum panels

    摘要: Detection and location of the source of acoustic emission in a thin aluminum panel is demonstrated using a multichannel fiber laser sensor system. Acoustic emission generated by a crack in an aluminum panel used as a test coupon in an accelerated fatigue experiment is detected and the location of the crack identified. Acoustic emission is detected over a bandwidth of around 0.5 MHz from a serially multiplexed array of four laser sensors and compared with measurements taken from four piezo-electric sensors co-located with the fiber laser sensors. The location of the crack is determined by first estimating time difference of arrival of signals at each sensor using a novel algorithm based on the cumulative distribution transform method with hyperbolic positioning. The fiber laser sensor is shown to match the signal-to-noise ratio of the industry standard (Mistras S9225) piezo-electric acoustic emission sensor.
