摘要: The terahertz frequency range beyond 3 THz has exciting potential to have a transformative impact in a wide range of applications, including chemical and biomedical sensing, spectroscopy, imaging, and short-distance wireless communication. While there have been significant advancements in silicon-based THz imagers in the frequency ranges below 1 THz, technological development beyond 3 THz has been impeded by the lack of solid-state sources in this frequency range. In addition, the design space beyond 3 THz opens up fundamentally new challenges across electronics and the electromagnetic interface. In this spectral range, the wavelength is small enough (λox ≈ 50 μm at 3 THz) that a vertical via from the top antenna layer to the detector is a distributed element (transmission line or radiator). In this letter, we follow a careful circuits-electromagnetics co-design approach toward a hybrid imaging system with a 100-pixel CMOS imager that interfaces with a THz quantum cascade laser frequency comb that spans 3.25–3.5 THz with mode spacing of 17 GHz. The array chip, while designed for an optimal operation across 2.7–2.9 THz, demonstrates an average noise equivalent power (NEP) (across pixels) of 1260 pW/√Hz between 3.25–3.5 THz and a projected NEP of 284 pW/√Hz across the design range of 2.7–2.9 THz. To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time full THz imaging in a hybrid quantum cascade laser (QCL)–CMOS fashion. This approach allows future works to leverage both QCL and CMOS technologies to demonstrate new technological advances for systems in the 1–10 THz range.

[IEEE 2018 40th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC) - Honolulu, HI, USA (2018.7.18-2018.7.21)] 2018 40th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC) - Hybrid multi-wavelength photoacoustic imaging
摘要: Multi-wavelength photoacoustic (PA) imaging has been studied extensively to explore the spectroscopic absorption contrast of biological tissues. To generate strong PA signals, a high-power wavelength-tunable pulsed laser source has to be employed, which is bulky and quite expensive. In this paper, we propose a hybrid multi-wavelength PA imaging (hPAI) method based on combination of single-wavelength pulsed and multi-wavelength continuous-wave (CW) laser sources. By carefully controlling laser illumination sequence (pulse-CW-pulse), and extracting the PA signals’ difference before and after heating of CW lasers, the optical absorption property of multi-wavelength CW lasers could be obtained. Compared with conventional PA imaging, the proposed hPAI shows much lower system cost due to the usage of single-wavelength pulsed laser and cheap CW lasers. Theoretical analysis and analytical model are presented in this paper, followed by proof-of-concept experimental results.

Integrated Whole Body MR/PET: Where Are We?
摘要: Whole body integrated magnetic resonance imaging (MR)/positron emission tomography (PET) imaging systems have recently become available for clinical use and are currently being used to explore whether the combined anatomic and functional capabilities of MR imaging and the metabolic information of PET provide new insight into disease phenotypes and biology, and provide a better assessment of oncologic diseases at a lower radiation dose than a CT. This review provides an overview of the technical background of combined MR/PET systems, a discussion of the potential advantages and technical challenges of hybrid MR/PET instrumentation, as well as collection of possible solutions. Various early clinical applications of integrated MR/PET are also addressed. Finally, the workflow issues of integrated MR/PET, including maximizing diagnostic information while minimizing acquisition time are discussed.

Hybrid anatomo-functional imaging of coronary artery disease: Beneficial irrespective of its core components
摘要: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common and important cause of ischemic heart disease, with major implications on global morbidity and mortality. Non-invasive testing is crucial in the diagnostic and prognostic work-up of patients with or at risk of CAD, and also to guide decision making in terms of pharmacologic and revascularization therapy. The traditional paradigm is to view anatomic (i.e., coronary computed tomography) and functional imaging (e.g., myocardial perfusion scintigraphy) tests as opposing alternatives. Such approach is too reductionist and does not capitalize on the strengths of each type of test while risking to overlook the inherent limitations. The combination of anatomic and functional tests in a logic of hybrid imaging holds the promise of overcoming the limitations inherent to anatomic and functional testing, enabling more accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and guidance for revascularization in patients with CAD.
