  • Self-starting mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser using a hybrid structure of no core - graded index multimode fiber as the saturable absorber

    摘要: We experimentally demonstrated a passively mode-locked all-fiber Tm laser using a no-core-graded-index multimode fiber structure as a saturable absorber based on the nonlinear multimode interference. Stable fundamentally mode-locking operation was obtained at a pump threshold of 180 mW. The output soliton pulses had a centre wavelength, spectral width, pulse duration, and repetition rate of 1895.7 nm, 3.3 nm, 1.25 ps, and 18.91 MHz, respectively. This is a simple, low-cost, stable, and convenient laser oscillator, with many potential applications in eye-safe ultrafast photonics.

  • All-polarization-maintaining dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser based on Sagnac loop filter

    摘要: We demonstrate an all polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber based dual-wavelength mode-locked Er-fiber laser. A nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) with an intracavity nonreciprocal phase shifter is used for self-started mode-locking. A short segment of PM fiber is angle-spliced to the NALM, functioning as a PM Sagnac loop filter, thus enabling dual-wavelength mode-locking. The wavelength separation is solely determined by the angle-spliced PM fiber length. Stable dual-wavelength mode-locking operation is switchable between 1570/1581 nm and 1581/1594 nm. The two-color pulse trains oscillating in the same cavity have an inherent offset repetition rate of ~1 kHz owing to cavity dispersion, allowing future high precision dual-comb applications with a simple and robust configuration.

  • Tunable Ytterbium-Doped Mode-locked Fiber Laser Based on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    摘要: A tunable mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with a tuning range of 55 nm is demonstrated. Currently, this is the widest tuning range for all-normal dispersion (ANDi) ytterbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on new-material saturable absorber (SA). The combined effects of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) saturable absorber and a reflective grating significantly improved laser performance: broad tuning range, superb stability and repeatability. The experimental results indicate that SWCNTs can be a brilliant saturable absorber in all-normal dispersion regime at 1 μm, with pulse width of 2.4 ps and optical spectral bandwidth of 1.6 nm across the full tuning range. The laser also shows that the optical spectrum can be tuned accurately and continuously, which gives possibility for various applications such as optical communications, spectroscopy, time-resolved measurement, etc.

  • Switchable transverse-mode operation of an actively mode-locked EDF laser based on low-modal-crosstalk mode MUX/DEMUX

    摘要: In this paper, we report an all-?ber actively mode-locked erbium-doped ?ber laser based on the mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). Higher-order mode and mode-locked pulse outputs can be realized simultaneously. The mode-locking is achieved by using a LiNbO3 Mach–Zehnder intensity modulator. Multiple linearly polarized (LP) modes in the ring ?ber laser are generated by mode MUX/DEMUX. For different spatial modes (LP01, LP11, LP21, hybrid modes), 17.32 ns, 20.40 ns, 23.00 ns and 17.24 ns mode-locked pulse trains are successfully obtained, respectively. The output laser operates at the fundamental frequency of 8.064 MHz with center wavelengths of 1528.71 nm for LP01 mode, 1528.30 nm for LP11 mode, 1530.45 nm for LP21 mode and 1530.05 nm for hybrid mode. Moreover, we also measure the slope ef?ciency, spectrum and intensity distribution. The results show that the proposed ?ber laser has potential applications in mode-division-multiplexed systems, optical sensing and optical ?ber communication.

  • Nanotube mode-locked, wavelength and pulsewidth tunable thulium fiber laser

    摘要: Mode-locked oscillators with highly tunable output characteristics are desirable for a range of applications. Here, with a custom-made tunable filter, we demonstrate a carbon nanotube (CNT) mode-locked thulium fiber laser with widely tunable wavelength, spectral bandwidth, and pulse duration. The demonstrated laser’s wavelength tuning range reached 300 nm (from 1733 nm to 2033 nm), which is the widest-ever that was reported for rare-earth ion doped fiber oscillators in the near-infrared. At each wavelength, the pulse duration can be regulated by changing the filter’s bandwidth. For example, at ~1902 nm, the pulse duration can be adjusted from 0.9 ps to 6.4 ps (the corresponding output spectral bandwidth from 4.3 nm to 0.6 nm). Furthermore, we experimentally and numerically study the spectral evolution of the mode-locked laser in presence of a tunable filter, a topic that has not been thoroughly investigated for thulium-doped fiber lasers. The detailed dynamical change of the mode-locked spectra is presented and we observed gradual suppression of the Kelly sidebands as the filter’s bandwidth is reduced. Further, using the polarization-maintaiing (PM) cavity ensures that the laser is stable and the output laser’s polarization extinction ratio is measured to exceed 20 dB.

  • Mega-Hertz repetition rate broadband nano-second pulses from an actively mode-locked Yb-fiber laser

    摘要: This work demonstrates an actively mode-locked all-normal dispersion Yb-fiber ring laser, delivering pulses of few nano-seconds (ns) to sub-ns duration at a 4 MHz repetition rate. Employing a filterless cavity architecture and different, long-length intra-cavity nonlinear fibers; a broadband output spectrum in the 1060–1140 nm wavelength region was obtained. With an increasing pump power, the pulse width reduced along with the appearence of new pulses, resulting into a muti-pulsing output. For a fixed pump power, the number of pulses and the amount of spectral broadening varied for different non-linear fibers. In the multi-pulsing state, the pulses were found to be located seperately in both time and wavelength, where Raman stokes corresponding to individual pulses could also be observed. The maximum output pulse energy achieved in a single pulse state was around 8.7 nJ, which increased to 14.5 nJ in a multi-pulse state. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a filterless active mode-locked fiber ring laser producing high-repetition rate broadband nano-second pulses in single and multi-pulse states at 1 μm.

  • Mode-locking in Er-doped fiber laser with reduced graphene oxide on a side-polished fiber as saturable absorber

    摘要: In this work, the generation of highly stable mode-locked pulses from a side-polished fiber (SPF) embedded with graphene oxide (rGO) nanoparticles (NPs) is proposed and demonstrated. The rGO NPs are obtained from a graphene oxide solution prepared using Hummer’s technique, before being reduced by a hydrothermal route. The rGO NPs, suspended in the form of a solution, are then drop-casted onto the SPF. The SPF is fabricated by polishing away the cladding layer of a single-mode fiber section, leaving the core exposed and allowing the evanescent field of the signal propagating through the fiber to interact directly with the NPs. The SPF is integrated into an erbium doped fiber laser (EDFL) cavity, and the strong nonlinear optical response and spectral filtering by the rGO NPs as well as total anomalous dispersion of the laser cavity generates highly stable soliton mode-locked pulses with visible Kelly’s sidebands at 1544.02 nm. The output pulses have a pulse repetition rate of 16.79 MHz and pulse duration of 1.17 ps throughout the mode-locking operation range of 64.44–280.5 mW. The rGO NP coated SPF in this work demonstrates the viability and performance of the SPF for mode-locked pulse generation via evanescent field interactions.

  • Fe <sub/>3</sub> O <sub/>4</sub> nanoparticles as the saturable absorber for a mode-locked fiber laser at 1558 nm

    摘要: We demonstrated a mode-locked erbium doped fiber laser (EDFL) operating at 1558 nm by exploiting ferroferric-oxide nanoparticles (FONPs) as the saturable absorber (SA) material. FONPs, with an average diameter of ~20 nm, were prepared by a thermal decomposition method, then mixed with sodium carboxymethylcelluose to form an FONP film. The FONP SA was fabricated through a sandwiched FONP film between two fiber connectors. By inserting the FONPs SA into an EDFL cavity pumped by a 980 nm laser diode, stable passive mode-locking was achieved with a threshold pump power of ~120 mW. The obtained mode-locked laser had a central wavelength of ~1558 nm, a spectral bandwidth of ~0.8 nm, a pulse width of ~4.35 ns, and a repetition rate of ~37.32 MHz. Furthermore, a maximum average power of ~17 mW was obtained for a pump power of 340 mW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that it has been demonstrated that FONPs can be used for constructing mode-locked fiber lasers.

  • Widely Wavelength-tunable Mode-locked Fiber Laser Based on a 45° Tilted Fiber Grating and Polarization Maintaining Fiber

    摘要: We present a passively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser with tunable parameters including central wavelength, 3dB bandwidth and pulse duration. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is realized by using single-walled carbon nanotubes polyvinyl alcohol (SWCNTs-PVA) composite film as saturable absorber. The tunable operation is implemented via a fiber birefringence filter consisting of a polarization maintaining (PM) fiber and a Brewster fiber grating. The laser achieves a maximum spectral tuning range of 36 nm with 8 cm PM fiber. The maximum spectral width variation of 5.19 nm is acquired when the PM fiber is 12 cm. Simultaneously, the spectral widths of pulses at different central wavelengths are also adjustable. Furthermore, the total cavity length is 8.28 m, which is the shortest cavity length to obtain such wide tuning range in an Erbium-doped fiber laser based on SWCNTs.

  • Spectrally Flat Supercontinuum Generation in a ZBLAN Fiber Pumped by Erbium-Doped Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

    摘要: We have experimentally demonstrated the flat supercontinuum (SC) generation using a 10-m-long ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) fluoride fiber pumped by an erbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser incorporating carbon-nanotube-based saturable absorbers. In order to improve the spectral flatness of SC, the standardized single-mode fiber with different lengths is connected to the output of the mode-locked fiber laser before the pulse amplification. The generated SC with ZBLAN fiber exhibits the best spectral flatness with fluctuation less than 1.29 dB over the wavelength of 1571.8 nm ? 1803.1 nm, showing potential applications in optical sensing.
